1. We don't really eat 'French' or 'English' for that matter.  Loads of pasta, homemade curries, salads, thai food, stir fries, you name it.

Having said that, wherever we roam, I will always have a few tins of Heinz baked beans.  You just can't beat them on toast with some grated cheese.....mmmmmmmmm [:)]

  2. I'm really lucky on the friends front.  I have best pals in three countries now, all of whom I can get hammered, laugh and cry with.....

What do I miss?  A lie in on a Sunday morning, having breakfast in bed.....with a glass of bubbly, then chilling out for the whole day, reading the paper, listening to CD's, sleeping some more, drinking more chardonnay, sleeping some more.....you get the picture...!

How long before I can do that again?  Don't answer that, I know it's at least eighteen years.......[:'(]

  3. Possibly PG, although Toulouse is a tourist destination in it's own right.  Having said that though, I think all the locals have migrated coastwards for the month.  The car park outside our place is half empty most days.  Normally the place is packed!  In that respect it's quite nice just now!

Also, my doctor just informed me not to get sick for the next four weeks!!! [:-))]

  4. Despite this being our second August here, we still haven't learned much about the French and their holiday time.

We wanted to go out for Sunday lunch yesterday, which shouldn't be so difficult in Toulouse, but oh boy were we mistaken.  We tried a restaurant which was recommended by a friend....it was shut.

So we moved on to a well known beer garden just outside town for a spot of light lunch......shut [:(]

OK, let's try our busy town centre favourite pizzaria.........shut for two weeks [:(][:(]

OK, we're getting desperate now, we need to feed the troops, how about eh pizza hut??.......naaaaaaaaa, shut [:(]

Kids are getting a bit scratchy by this time, so we take the only other option we can think of.....MacD's [+o(]

The whole of Touolouse was there, it must have been the only place to get a meal in town!!!!

What do the tourists who flock here do for munchies during the first two weeks of August?

Is it just catering establishments or does the whole country shut down in August?

  5. Hello Tech-teacher

That's a very long post with lots of technical questions!  I can't answer them all but I can tell you that you are not deluding yourselves.  It sounds like you have thought it through in detail and have many opportunities.  Toulouse could definitely be the place for you.

We live in Toulouse and my husband is self employed, he is a programmer/consultant and has been drifting into the web design business for about the last year.  He now has the freedom to work from home, that's the beauty of web design, you don't need to be in any particular place.  He has clients in France, the UK and the States.

There are certainly many high-tech companies here and I think with your skills you should have no problems finding work.  Certainly you will need to brush up on your French, but it sounds to me like you have the opportunity to do that before you get here.  As a fluent Spanish speaker you will also have an advantage, especially if you can get yourself some sort of translation qualification before you get here.  I know of a company here who are always looking for qualified translators.  Perhaps that sort of work could tide you over whilst you were studying.

I really can't answer the question on same sex marraiges here, but maybe your partner, as a French citizen, would be better equipped to find out about that side of things.

    Good luck!

  6.
On the other hand, you find some interesting things. I have a regular prescription for a beta-blocker (standard BP medication) which cost £6+ a throw (standard prescription charge) in UK but here is only EUR 3.something and, after the 70% CPAM/Carte Vitale kicks in, a mere EUR 1.14 or thereabouts (i.e. ca. 78p).
It's true that many medications seem much cheaper here, but other things very expensive.  We are Switzerland based and pay for our health cover there, so we pay for everything we need here then claim it back.  I went to get some standard bloods done the other week and was amazed to receive a bill for 190EUROS!!![:-))]

  7. What I don't understand is, where on earth did they get the idea from??  What on earth possesses them?  Is it just peer pressure?

I agree with Tresco, these things need to be brought to the parents attention.  These articles are important and need to be discussed.  Injecting some humour doesn't, for me at least, detract from the seriousness of it.

  8.
Personally I think it's really tight to have a meal and not pay for any type of drink.
We went for a meal at the weekend.  They bought a lovely chilled carafe to the the table before we'd even ordered.  We spent 50+EURO on pizzas, pasta, salad and coffee.  We also left a tip.  We enjoyed the water and no, we didn't order another drink.

Calling us tight?  I don't think so.......

  10. NOTHING could be worse than the horrific  Keeping Up Appearances.....pass the bucket!!!!!

That kind of slapstick makes me embarrassed to be British!

They re-run it on BBC Prime all the time........cringe. [+o(]

Can't think of any stand ups I like really........

  12. We bought a few bottles of this wine about a year ago at the Carrefour wine sale.  We actually did it as a bit of a joke (for obvious reasons!) and gave some bottles away to friends who do not live in France.

However, we kept a couple back for ourselves and it was really good stuff!!  We've looked for it ever since and have yet to find it.  Does anybody know this wine/where it originates from and more importantly, where can I some more?
