  1. I am pretty sure that if you are a EU citizen you have the right to stay as long as you want. If or when you do move here, regardless of whether you work in France or not or are living off savings you are required by law to complete a French tax return. You will also need to join the French health system at some point and if you are below compulsory retirement age, it is likely that you will have to contribute something to this. There are exceptions, but this is why the relevant bodies will want to see evidence as to what your financial means are.

I hope I have got that right, but hopefully Ron and  Sunday Driver will correct me if I have got it wrong.

  2. [quote user="Dick Smith"]This is all anecdotal - do you have any evidence? Having recently been in the civil service for 5 years I saw nothing of the kind.

It may be something that I have recalled from my time spent in employment in UK, but I'm not in the habit of making things up. [:D]

If you mean do I have the relevant job description and criteria with this written down on , that I can post on here then no I don't. But it does not make it any less true.

  3.  I don't agree with so called positive discrimination as it can sometimes be so negative.

The entrance exam for a particular civil service position allowed those from an ethnic minority to pass with a lower mark. This had nothing to do with language difficulties etc as other UK qualifications were required. But effectively, the ethnic minority candidates were being told that the employer did not expect them to be as intelligent as the non ethnic minority.

    How could that be positive?

  4. My step daughter in law is mixed race and hates the term half caste . She will firmly point out the error of anyone who uses that term to describe her or her children. Yet , Chief who is Black uses that terminology to decribe his children. Is she being over sensitive and taking offence where none is meant? Likewise, could it be that the old lady Clair looks after is a product of her time and means no disrespect? Yet in this day and age, she could so easily offend someone.

Did you think she meant to offend , Clair?

  5. In the short time I have been using this forum, this topic appears on an almost monthly basis and then descends  all too often into quite a vicious row between those who thinks its right to inform the authorities and those who don't.

If this is such a common occurence and people are getting away with it, then I can see that in some areas this will lead to bad feeling. The option is simple either tell or don't, but IMHO I think 'career' black workers don't deserve any loyalty from people they don't know especially if it reflects badly or make life more difficult for legitimate workers of any nationality.

  6. I get the publicité for a well know supermarket in my post box every week, I check their special offers and go into the store and find when I get home and check my receipt that I have been charged a not very special price. [:@]

This week there was supposedly a three for two on a certain brand of pizzas and I checked the ticket on the shelf as well as I could with my eyesight and still got charged for all three.

My French is not up to complaining standard yet, so I will certainly take the offers with a pinch of salt in future. Have I got a very slack store or is this kind of thing common ?

  7. EASY CHICKEN LIVER PATE

    175g soft butter
    450g chicken livers
    2 shallots finely chopped
    1 tsp thyme leaves
    2 cloves garlic finely chopped
    2 tbsp brandy
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
    55g  clarified melted butter (optional)

Heat 15g of the butter in a frying pan until frothy but not brown.
Add half the livers and fry quickly on all sides but so they are still pink in the middle about 4-5 minutes.
Repeat with another 15g of butter and liver.
Place the liver and juices in a food processor.
In the same pan heat another 15g butter add the shallot, thyme and garlic, and cook over a moderate heat until the shallot is soft but not coloured.
    Add the brandy and pepper.

Place everything in the food processor and rest of butter and blend until smooth.
If you want the pate really smooth push mixture through a sieve and put in a bowl. Cover with the cling film, cool then refrigerate.

If not using within 48 hours cover the top with clarified butter.

You can add other things like chopped mushrooms, cranberries, bits of apricots  etc at the same time as the shallots.

Very quick , easy as tasty[:D]

  8. This isn't meant to derail the topic, but where should the line be drawn? The West may be tolerant and generally we pat ourselves on the back for being so, but as Saligo Bay said one cannot tolerate everything and some people draw the line at  different points.

Should we allow all parts of some Islamic cultures to become mainstream, well, I think there would be a resounding no to that. There is a lot that some Moslems adhere to or would like to adhere to that I could never accept. The Muslim Council of GB have stated that they would like some aspects of Sharia Law to used within 'their' communities rather than the law of our lands. By requesting this, it is doing little to demonstrate a willingness to integrate fully and some people may view this as the thin end of the wedge.

  9. I don't fully agree that it is their choice  when these choices are made in the context of their culture and background, all of which are traditionally male dominated. Thus they may think it is their free choice but is it really?

There is nothing in the Koran ( word of Man not God just like the Bible) that dictates that they have to be covered to such an extent to be modest. I am not a feminist BTW. But if women have to cover themselves in such a manner to avoid men lusting after them, that is further evidence that the choice is not really theirs.

However, I think it would be better if the change came from within rather than being imposed on them however well intended. Had this ban come into force 10 years ago, it probably would have been welcomed by moderate Muslims but in the current political climate, it is being viewed differently.
