  1. I know that if I sign a bon de visite that I am obliged to buy from that immobilier until the bon de visite expires. I have no problem with that and everybody knows exactly where they stand legally.

I have recently enquired about a property via a website, I haven't signed anything, I haven't visited them, just asked a question that does not identify the properties location in any way.

I don't see that this can be classed as an introduction for the purposes of tying me to one immo.  Morally, I would want a bit more than one question answered to justify an immos fee and I would rather deal in legalities than moralities when buying a house.

I have also found myself speaking to different immos about the same property entirely by accident, because the one immo showed a picture of the rear of the house and an internal picture and the other showed a picture of the front of the house and the garden !

  2. I have now got my mincer from the shop Clair recommended and looking at their brochure I am going to be spending far too much money there.

Today I made this  http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/an-authentic-ragu-bolognese,1678,RC.html having minced the beef, pork and even the turkey livers [8-)] and it is sensational.

I have made it before and it is well worth the time and effort and cooks even better in a slow cooker than in the oven and freezes well too.

  3. I know that you have to be careful in France when using immos and viewing / buying houses but at what point can they actually claim you are their customer?

Eg I looked at a house last summer and had to sign a document preventing me from doing a deal with the owner and cutting them out. Other Immo's have not asked me to do this.

Does merely asking a question about a property on their website, class you as a client ? If I then went direct to the owner, would I be in hot water?

Is there a definitive line that has to be crossed or is it a woolly area?

  4. Missy you certainly did find that funny![:P]

France It is illegal to call a pig Napoleon

So what is he called in the French translation of Animal Farm?

I was told once by a man from Herefordshire that one can shoot a welshman in Hereford Cathedral but only with a bow and arrow!

  5. We had a new build and even though it was built start to finish by various artisans we had to have this assurance dommage ouvrage. I don't know why as I know now every registered artisan has his own cover but it was built into the price of the house build. Once the house was finished and we signed to say every thing was ok, the project manager came back with the certificate from the assurance company. Sorry I can't be any more specific than that.
  6. Living with parents = resident in the UK.

Some UK car rental companies won't allow their cars to leave the UK.

When I had my own car in the UK, I always had to notify them for extra cover when I was visiting France and they gave me a green bit of paper. My sister's car is covered with her own insurance company automatically when she visits, don't know all the ins and outs, but she is a UK resident.

  7. When I arrived in France I applied for a Carte de sejour and I was told it wasn't needed. What ever the rights of wrongs of all this with reference to other nationalities supposedly taking advantage, it seems that it is entirely of the French bureaucrats making.

My E106 expired recently, by law I have to have health cover, I applied for CMU got it and have to pay for it.

If they get rid of the CMU what health cover are we supposed to get as I thought we ( Europeans) are required by law to join the French system rather than take out private insurance?

For those who complain about  "negativity" where there is just another reality, are you so afraid of your bubble being burst that you cannot allow other perspectives to enter your world?

It seems that it is to use Dago's phrase  'them that tell it like it is' feel threated by us that don't.  I cannot relate to the world of TU, SB, LG etc but I am not walking around with blinkers on.

If your boat is rocked so easily, what does that say about you?Why is it so important  to pretend that France is some kind of theme park?

Of course we don't think France is a theme park but because we cannot see things as they do, we get treated as though we are some kind of imbeciles and we are not.

Personally, I find that it is  best  not to live in denial. I prefer to carve my happiness in an aware way, ditching the blinkers,  embracing the roses as well as the s**t, the good and the bad. It is possible to love and hate at the same time - indeed, is there any other way?

No there isn't, I have had some bad things to deal with since I have been in France, grabbed a fistful of thorns to get a few roses but MY France is fantastic!

There are a handful of posters that seemingly cannot find much to commend France, which is their choice. However they are not in the majority and whilst they might fit in better in 'The Real France', they are out of step with most who post on here.

  9. There are some insurance companies that print all the specification etc in English ( one used to advertise on the opening page of the forum, but I don't know what they are like) .

You may pay a bit more for the privilege of having it in English but at least you will know exactly what you are covered for and it could save you money in the long term.

EDIT   This is the one, they do 'professional insurance' ( is that what you need?) as well as other types.

  10. Teamed Up.

I admit that I am naive in many things French as I have only been here a little while. One cannot research everything or know all the answers or even  all of the questions. For me I am on a voyage of discovery and I am glad that there are people like Sunday Driver and Ron etc that can answer queries when they arise.

This idea that I or others like me, know little of how France works may be true, I accept that. But I don't live in ignorant bliss, I watch only French TV, I buy a French paper and I have French friends, though I am not fluent in French and this limits my understanding of events etc however, I do have an interest in what is happening in France (more so if it affects me directly) and try to find out info from other sources, I am sure that lots of newbies do too.

Everybody has to start somewhere TU, you are fourtunate in that you have a couple of decades of French living under your belt and have formed your opinions based on your experiences. If I stay in France as long as you have, I may well think exactly the same way as you do, but chances are I won't, because everyones perspectives on a variety of subjects will always be different.

You are clearly passionate about your perception of France and I do respect your point of view.

  11. Please don't be offended because I have named certain names, there may be others but these are the ones that spring to mind  and I am not having a personal attack just making observations.

It certainly seems that Rumzigal, Teamed Up and Languedoc Girl et al have a good deal of experience of life in France, but I don't think even with all their experiences that they speak for the majority of people on this forum. That they have apparently experienced life at the 'sharp end', have lived in France for an eon or can speak fluent French, doesn't make every one else's experiences less valid ( and I know that they haven't said that is the case either)

I love reading the perspectives of all people on this forum from the "done it, seen it, bought the tee shirt" brigade to the holiday home owners to those that have yet to make the move.

It is good to get opinions from all side but not every one will be able to identify with other peoples perspectives and I would suggest that a lot of people that contribute to the forum are generally happy with their lot in France. So they may be retired or gite owners or whatever, but they are generally happy. I would further suggest, that for whatever reason, the opinions of the aforementioned are equally as valid as anybody elses but the majority will not be able to relate to all of them, all of the time.[:)]

  12. I have been having a good Spring Clean today and shredding lots of old letters etc.  I can't really post all these bits of paper into the paper recycling bin, so I thought I would keep them and get a paper brick maker and turn then into 'logs' in anticipation of having our woodburner.

My mind moved on... and I wondered if it was more Green to recycle all the papers I have into logs for the fire ( I have got to burn something) or  continue taking them to the village recycling bin.
