1. "In Paris they just simply opened their eyes and stared when we spoke to them in French! We never did succeed in making those idiots understand their own language".

2. I'm sorry that this is going to sound negative; but unless your daughter already speaks French well or has the ability to pick it up very quickly, it will be very tough for her. Is it not possible that you could wait a couple of years until she has finished school. What is her career plan, if she has one, unemployment is over 10% in France and it would be difficult to find a job.

We know of a 13 year old who recently moved over and is struggling enormously and wants to go back - it's early days yet, but I wouldn't put a child of that age who is already going through the 'trauma' of puberty, through that experience.
3. It might not look as though it's grown but if you get down on your hands and knees with your ear to the ground (really!!) and look across the seed bed from ground level you might see some little green blades poking up. If not, I would expect very soon.
4. I've just noticed on the calender that the 29th May is Fetes des Meres.

I presume, you have to vote locally where you live, so this would pose a problem for those who with to visit their mamans for the weekend, who live in a different part of France!

TF1 on line news this morning: http://news.tf1.fr/news/france/0,,3205763,00.html

5. >>> "Heard comments from locals in Rennes on Radio 5 lunchtime who had mixed views but all agreed that no info has been given to the french people to find out what exactly it means"

I've heard several times on local radio an Government 'advert' about this subject with a phone number and I think website address to get more info. Sorry, don't know what the web address is...maybe a Google.fr search will come up with something.
6. Bamboo would be an option. We have a very large bamboo 'bush' near our pool and get no leaf drop into the pool. There are many varieties to chose from, different heights, shapred leaves, colour of stems etc.
7. I also breastfed my 2 for 11 months each (even through a nasty bite after teeth appeared!!!).

I bought the March edition of Sante magazine yesterday (French). Surprising there is an extensive article in it about Cantines Scolaires, the headline being "Nos enfants sont mal nourris - il faut que ca change" (excuse lack of accents).

Haven't had chance to read the article yet, except that they say that €1.50 would be the minimum to produce a healthy meal, but it is estimated that around €0.80 is spent on average. They chart some example meals (no choice: hors d'oeuvre/plat principal/garniture/fromage/desert!!) and state that some are too high in fat/sugar or lacking fibres.

Personally, I am very happy with the menu that my children bring home at the start of each month, it is varied and seems healthy (they even indicate whether the food is frozen, fresh or preserved). There are items on the menu that you wouldn't even see in a restaurant in England let alone a school cantine. For a monthly 'forfait' of around €30, is good value too.
8. Yes, he should be in CM2 this school year, going on to college in 6e in September, the same as my son.

BTW "My son is 10, his dob is 13/11/94 so will be 11 in May." If his birthday is 13th November, how can he be 11 in May?!!!
9.
But is wasn't Lea and Perrins that was affected, so you are in luck. http://www.food.gov.uk/safereating/sudani/sudanlist I know what you mean though, I'll find some treat and buy it and get...
It is very presumptious of you to assume that everyone buys the Lea & Perrins brand of Worcestershire Sauce....
10. There is a Kennels/Cattery about half an hour from you further south at Montagrier near Tocane st Apres, called 'Pattes & Griffes'. It is about 20k North West of Perigueux and it is english run. I can't personally recommend them as I've not needed to use them yet.

11. You may have seen yesterday's news item on English TV regarding the use of the Sudan1 colouring in over 350 food items. This colouring has caused cancer in animals in the labs. There has been mass de-stocking of these products from supermarket shelves. Most of them are 'ready meals' and so would not apply to us living in France, however there are a few storecupboard items you may have.

Check the full list, and the batches affected on this website:

http://www.food.gov.uk/safereating/sudani/sudanlist

The Worcestershire Sauce affected has use by dates of 2008/2009/2010.

I've done a Google search and can find no reference to any food products in France that may affected.

I think Bex was after the names of the French equivalents....
