  1. our toilet is new (well less than 4 months old) and was of the - err - cheaper variety shall we say, so i tend to agree that it is likely to be the cheap fittings rather than anything which is associated with age in our toilet in any case.
  2. Hijack away! ive been on internet for hours looking and its driving me insane.   happy to buy from dealer but i hate driving and OH not keen to drive miles with trailer he has just collected when he has never driven a car with trailer before.   can't believe its that hard, but daren't say anything cos i do ANYTHING to get out of driving myself, so ..

    i am in 87 ....

  3. thanks all.

its really funny that you shouldmention concorde because i lived in hounslow for a while, and at 7.00 pm everyday all you could see were people's mouth's moving, either on television or from person in front of you.   I have been thinking for several weeks now that flushing the toilet provides the same effect in our house!   Sadly we cannot normally just manage the on-off at 7.00 pm !

i will try your  suggestions and i am sure it will work.   thanks again

  4. you are right of course, but like the posting below she suggested sucking honey out, and i didnt like the waxy bits, so didnt want to offend by saying it and asking for another way of using them.   still they do look pretty on the kitchen work-surface.
  5. Hi all

After we have flushed our toilet, it fills very noisily, then just to compound the problem, right at the end of the filling process it lets our a horrendous screech that can be heard i am sure several villages away.      my OH is a carpenter by trade, and plumbing is not really his forte; however its start to drive me seriously insane.    a friend told us that perhaps we should put a restricter on the (toilet/pipe ??).   Not sure if this really is the answer but he could well be correct.   does anyone else have, or has had this problem in the past?

toilet is upstairs if that helps, on first floor.

  6. A friend has just brought me some honey combs - she keeps bees (obviously!).  Not sure if there is anything i can dowith them, other than just suck the honey out?

~Got guests coming for dinner saturday, so not sure if there is anything i can use them for, as desert, any thoughts \?

  7. yes we have a very modest blow up pool; only myself and OH use it (cant swim in it).   Whatever i stuff in the stupid  thing the 3-way strips NEVER show the correct free chlorine etc etc levels.   Now call me slapdash and unhygienic but neither of us have died in the last few weeks from using it, so i dont worry too much.   it smells faintly  of chlorine and somehow that makes me feel better.   have to say however i would be totally 'by the book' if i had a pool which other people or children would be using.

however, it would be interesting to know what possible dire consequences of a slightly grubby, slightly too alkaline pool myself and OH might expect to get?   anyone know ?

  8.  appreciate what you are saying, but with the best will in the world, i cannot afford to (and actually dont want to) catch all neighbourhood cats and get them spayed.   I would be on a losing mission.  dont misunderstand me, i do know that what you are saying is correct, and i am not being churlish, but if i started that i would  essentially end up as a one-woman free spaying clinic.

But thank you for all your comments.   i thought i would be relieved that  they are gone but actually i have worried about them more today not knowing where they are - ive been poking around all day and no sign.   i guess its just another part of french country life that i will have to get used to coping with.   if i do find them i will no doubt be back asking for advice on feeding !

  9. When would the gites be 5 years old do you know, from the date of the construction permit being put in, or more logically from date of notification of completion?   Seems a really stupid question i know, but we may be in similar situation, and ours will take two years to complete, so  it could be quite important for us.
  10. We have these also and they most definitely look like beetles to me, although i can see that you are very knowledgeable so dont doubt you are right.   Big black things that race back into their holes if you come near them?   The dog and cat absolutely adore them and sit by the holes for hours, fascinated.   I am less than fascinated by them although they havent done me any harm so i have generously resisted temptation to exterminate them.
  11. We have tonnes and tonnes of old broken tiles we want rid of.   I have seen that sometimes the local farmers use this to lay down paths etc, presumably to stop tractors sinking down into mud in wet weather.   I have been trying to pluck up courage to ask our two farmers in immediate viscinity if they want this.    Dont want to make a complete idiot of myself or look like i am trying to get them to get rid of it for free for me (although of course i am come to think of it!), but only if they can use it.   Has anyone else had such hard core gratefully accepted by local farmers if they come and take it away ?

  12. Its a bit of a double edged sword to be honest - covered them up well and left them for night after much agonising about animals getting them.   went down with some trepidation this morning, visions in my head of scenes from chainsaw massacre etc etc.    No sign - just a little gap where they were.    no fur, blood or guts, so surmise mother has moved them.    Now, as you say question is where to?    Will have a scout around obvious places, as not that many potentials left now as we have cleared a lot of the grounds now.    Selfishly hoping she may have moved them to someone else's land who might want a couple of them if they survive.

We are determined not to make the mistake of taking on a load of animals we cant afford and dont really want (one cat one dog is sufficient for us), but its terribly hard to see them defenceless like that and not worry about them.

  13. I was wondering whether to put some food out for mother to try and tempt her back?

I dont think mother is feral - the father is (or i assume the black tom which lives in field is father as one kitten is black anyway).   Definitely my cat cant be blamed as he is castrated!  I got a quick look at mother and i think its either opposite farm's cat or one from down the road a bit.   However, cant believe none of them knew their cat was pregnant so dont really believe any of them are going to do anything except deny the kittens are their moggies, or alternatively take them with a smile and drown them once our backs are turned.   Looked a few times from distance and no sign of mother returning that i can see yet.

  15.  I know that there have been previous postings on this subject, but for budgetting purposes i am interested in knowing if anyone has recently had water and/or electric connected to a new building.   We are currently renovating two buildings on our land, both of which are less than 5 metres from an existing water and electric supply.   In my original budget i had allowed something like £3,000 for this (purely as a guess) but am not sure if i am way over or way under.

Appreciate from other postings that i need to get water/electric people out to  give us a cost, but dont actually need these services til next year, so was wondering if anyone would know if my budgetted cost was in line?

many thanks (PS there are some old postings with costs in francs, but i am afraid francs mean nothing to me)

  16. I have just been to clear up some old trees trunks etc we piled up and was waiting for them to dry before burning, when a cat ran out from the large pile.  As I reached towards bottom i found what i at first thought was going to be rat or snake (by shuffling) but sadly is 5 very small kittens.   they have fur but i didnt want to disturb or touch them so i cannot see if eyes open or not.   I would say they are 3-4 weeks old.    I have no idea what to do - I dont want 5 cats - I dont want 5 feral cats around attacking my cat either.   But, of course i dont want them to die.   I have tried to cover the area with cut ferns etc and leaves to keep the sun off.   Does anyone have a view on whether the mother will either come back and continuing feeding them or try to move them?    I found them about 30 minutes ago and its pretty hot today, so not sure whether i should put  more cover on?

    any thoughts welcome please?

  17. I apologise in advance if this is a poor description.   Can anyone please tell me the name (in french) of the brackets which clip over ladder treads between 2/3 ladders with scaffold boards laid across to create a walkway at about gutter height.   You see (or so i am told!) a lot of local artisans using this form of scaffolding instead of towers.       If anyone knows what i mean, then a supplier name would also be much appreciated.

thanks in advance for any replies

  18. I cannot guarantee this, but i believe you are correct in your assumption ref bathroom and kitchen regs being same here as UK, because our architect has drawn a lobby area for the bathroom which comes from our kitchen downstairs, but not upstairs.
  19. that sounds good - i will try - unfortunately lost walnut tree in a storm so no walnuts to be expected but i am sure my neighbours have plenty - i shall start to mention my love of walnuts soon so they recall in good time!  (Dont worry i am not being nasty, i shall ensure i return favour with other things)
