  1. i have to correct you on that one - agree totally on the first point - if we ever decided to sell up and move i could open a whole store selling extension sockets !

on second point OH is also a builder (carpenter by trade, but also generally knows most things, except electrics which he wont touch !).   i have known him to get out of bed at 3.00 in morning in uk because he heard our gutter leaking, not just to look you understand but to get ladder out and clear it - oh my god, trust me sometimes i would sometimes rather have a procrastinater !

    enjoy the kittens !

  2. oh ! now i almost wish i hadnt asked !   the black one looks just like my cat when he was cute and innocent (as opposed to being a gorgeous pain in the a*** now)!

one day i will get another, but i fear that if i went down that road i would end up a mad old lady with 100 cats  (oh and one dog).

    thanks for piccies.

i am so jealous i can hardly type !

  3. nah !

these were pleasant middle-aged women, they would NEVER believe i was saying that to them ! (even inadvertently!)

by the way i am female, christine !   I shall go with your suggestion ......... or i might, after a few drinks, just go with Twinkle's pronounciation, to see what happens !

  4. yes i did wonder if it was my pronounciation, but i said same thing to french neighbour (who is thankfully (and rarely i suspect in rural france!) fluent in english), and he didnt query it.    what does it mean (above) - err if you could explain without censors jumping on your head !

thanks for all responses.   i think i will try for a different phrase next time because i am starting to get paranoid about answering this question in french now !    Not that i object to making people happy, but it's the only time people have postively sniggered at my french, so clearly something is, as you say, either iffy with pronounciation, or they really are seeing benny hill !

  5. its been  here since we have - april.       have blocked up a lot of the airhole into cellar because cat kept going in and trying to catch the bat.    did leave hole of about 3 x 3 inches, and i am sure there are other gaps it could get out of.      we have only ever seen one.     when the man came to mend the leaking pipe he squealed like paul burrows in the tomb of death or whatever it was called in i'm a celebrity, when it flew over his head.

we quite like seeing him fly around there.   have a digi-camera and will have a go next time i go down there !

  6. my french is not too good, but i get by.   armed with my dictionary (which i dont have to hand right now, so cant check exactly what it says), in order to explain i lived with someone i checked and used an expression along lines of 'j'habite en concubinage'.    the lady smirked.   i checked with my french neighbour who assured me it was ok.    yesterday i had to explain my marital status to another person in officialdom; i used the same expression; this one positively sniggered !! Is there something wrong with my dictionary, or is this phrase just not used anymore please?

  8. i know its male cos he is trying to get a free ride into my house - only joking for all male readers!

i have figured he is living under my step, which is a fairly dangerous place to be with us tromping in and out, so next time he (there i go again !) pops up, i shall try to move him as suggested.    no water nearby as far as i can see, but we did find another one (salamander that is) in the cellar when we moved here, co-habiting with the bat.   Bat is still there but OH moved salamander out thinking it had got "lost" and would like some "sun".   He meant well; it may well be the same one actually.

moving on to the bat, if you read this though chris, i am not sure how he is getting in and out - stupid question from someone who knows very little about bats - do they actually need to come and go, or could he find all the food he needs in cellar ?     he seems happy enough down there (decided this one is male also as you can see), but obviously is a little peeved on the rare occasion we go into cellar and turn on light.

  9. Hi

For the last two nights we have had a salamander (I only know its this because i searched yellow and black lizard and found a previous post thanks to chris of course !) trying to enter house at night.     Cat and dog think its a great game but we have managed to keep them away from him/her so far.

Open our door at about 11.00 at night and there he is trying to get in.     Should i just leave him or get the gloves out to try and put him elsewhere?

and for anyone who is wondering, its not THAT damp in our house surely ?!

  10. I would like a hedge !      To try to be more specific;   we have a garden at back of our cottage which is not screened from neighbour, but her outbuildings kind of back on to it, so neither of us have a good visual line of the other.      However, we do not have or intend to put any kind of screen on this part, because it allows us both to hang over the fence gossiping and discussing vegetable plots, etc.   basically cosy but not intrusive to either of us.    then we have also a large area of around a further 75 metres where we border the same (extremely nice) neighbours land, and in front of which we wish to place our swimming pool, where there is direct line of sight to her house / garden etc.   currently we do not really hang around this area too much, so its not a problem.    however the pool will change things, and i can hardly imagine that watching myself and OH sporting our less than perfect anatomies will be her idea of summer entertainment !

Hence the hedge - sorry to ramble but thought it might be worthwhile explaining purpose of said hedge.     I want a hedge which grows to around human height (!), grows quite quickly (I can use alternative screening for a couple of years), doesnt spread out too much back to front if you know what i mean, and doesnt require that i spend the rest of my life on a pruning mission.      i know i may be asking a lot here, and may have to compromise (oh and looks nice too please !), but does anyone have any ideas.

On same theme, i purloined a small section of hedge from not too far from where i live, which i have stuck in the ground, and seems to be alive.    this may or may not fit the bill, but i am not entirely sure what it is.       green (that should be a massive help !), sort of silvery leaves, lovely scent in autumn.   it may be an eleagnus ebbingei (something similar in gardening catalogue i have seen), but i am not sure if there are different types.   anyway to stop rambling now, does anyone know the growth rate of this hedge (if indeed it is that).

  11. have you a problem  with hr managers by chance ????????!!!!!!

the point about cover letter for all job applications is that unless the cover letter has been individualised to the job it appears that the applicant has not the necessary enthusiasm to research the company/position adequately.    Its so competitive now that it makes sense to carry out basic research on the company and the position for which you are applying.   thats all !

i am sure you will meet a nice one with common-sense one day soon .......

  12. i apologise in advance with this question, i honestly have trawled through search but cannot find the answer to my query.

today, during the course of sorting out various administrative things i brandished a tax fonciere as proof of utility bill type thing.    the official in question commented on my 'two properties'.   No, i replied, just the one and some outbuildings.    She insisted and pointed out the appropriate place on the tax fonciere bill where i am paying for two properties.    My fault, no excuses, i dont read bills i just pay them, if they seem reasonable.

Anyway to cut a long story short, we have a teeny weeny 150% derelict cottage on the property, by which i mean no floor, no roof to speak of, although it does have 3 3/4 walls !   I can only assume this to be my second property.     Now i am not overly bothered, because the sum in question seems to be around 44 euros a year.

However, for sake of understanding what i am paying for, should i actually be paying tax fonciere for a property which it is impossible to live in, or does that apply only to tax habitation ?

Does anyone know the answer please?

    many thanks

  13. hi ron

i am confused as i thought you paid 8% of any earnings or savings interest to the health system, irrespective of the 9000 euros per couple allowance.  have i got this wrong ?   or is it just that you have to earn over 9000, but that this does not apply to savings interest.   i h ope this makes sense.

  14. thanks i fancy a rodie.    could well be granite - all i know is that its a pig of a thing to dig through !

got it all wrong as normal - tree did not have 1 metre circumference trunk - i think it was the roots !    anyway hacked away and stuffed it in a hole two weeks ago - still there !      hopefully if it withstands the winter then next spring i shall see if it is alive !

  15. I can't really comment from the point of view of how a french employer would see this covering letter.

From perspective of a UK human resource manager point of view (previous life), the vast majority of the information above should actually be in your cv (in my view), not in your covering letter.      Nothing is more off-putting to a person analysing responses to job advertisements or even speculative approaches, than a covering letter that appears to be appropriate to all situations, ie something you just trot out every time you apply for a job and change the address at the top.    I have always steadfastly ignored any applicants for senior positions who send a letter such as above.     Sorry if this sounds unconstructive.       A CV is a factual document (or should be !!! heh heh - few are as we all know !), and should contain all of the information in your first two paragraphs, although you should emphasise as much as possible any relevant french qualifications, and i would actually put this in your covering letters here (although would not advise this necessarily in the UK).

As one poster has already said, the key for a covering letter is to gear it towards the job for which you are applying.   Keep the letter short, and try to briefly highlight how your experience would make you invaluable for the position on offer - be specific.

Finally, i would never personally say something like 'i would very much appreciate an interview' for a uk covering letter (dont know about french perhaps someone else could help on this).     If your cv is good and you feel your experience is right up there for the position then frankly you should expect an interview!    (not to say you will get one however!).        Thus something more positive and slightly less, er , desperate sounding would be good there.   perhaps - I am available to attend interview (specifying anytimes you are not), and look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Again i can only also reiterate what other posters have said, you need to check more thoroughly what the expectations of french employers are, as they could be very different (as indeed you clearly realise yourself, by asking for advice from any french members of forum).

    good luck

  16. thanks again all - i dont suppose its life threatening though i do keep getting images of myself hunched over to around the 2 foot mark shuffling around the garden - mind i am not very tall anyway so wouldnt be toooooooooo far to drop - other half is worried he might lose me when we go out or trip over me - its all fun in our house.     such is life, i will have to make best of whatever turns out.    but many thanks for responses and good luck wishes (hopefully i wont need tooo much luck !)
