  1. If you need new white goods, or feel l ike you may need to replace them in the near future, then i would suggest you buy over here.    We purchased several new white goods/electrical from Argos before we came, on the basis that they were cheap, could come with us in removal lorry (hence no need to not have a fridge or whatever for a few days while we looked around for a good deal).     However after 6 months 3 items are no longer functioning; at least if we had bought in France we could have exchanged them via guarantee.   Also, there are some good sales on white goods at various times, so if you have some appliances that are on the way out, it may be worth bringing them anyway, until you see a replacement at a good price.

As for other stuff, i am not really a possessions person, so was quite happy to leave behind some stuff, although having to leave my plants behind upset me!    However, when you first come over your priority is unlikely to be hitting the shops, and so you do need to bring enough stuff to make your start here comfortable.    If you can I would then wait until you see what you like at a reasonable price, rather than going for the mega shop.

  2. thanks - she is as far as you can get from a breed - can't even guess at what kind of cross she is, because there are probably so many different types in there, and mother was a rescue dog, so no chance of getting any info from that source.       I don't intend to breed her of course, and she will be sterilised after first season (vet advised that she should have one season before sterilisation) but we are looking after a friends uncastrated dog at end of february for some days and am getting paranoid that she will elect that time to come into season, which will then be a nightmare!
  3. many thanks for that - i will give it a go and hopefully the vet will understand me.   I had read that normally a female dog comes into season between 6 to 8 months so wondered why we have had no signs as yet ....
  4. I have been wondering what hair dye and hair removal products do to a fosse?

Since i use both (!! yes i am female), I have so far done the deeds in a bowl and chucked in a hole in garden .....    is it ok to wash off hair dye in shower and similarly hair removal products ?

  5. hi

My puppy is over nine months and has not come into season yet; as i need to take her to vet tomorrow anyway (those floppy ears are playing up again), I wanted to mention above to vet.   Thus my question; what is the french for in season please ?   my dictionary does not seem to have anything suitable (the nearest i can get is my dog (well not a dog but i cant put the word) is not hot !! and i dont think thats going to do it somehow !

  6. I paid 250 euros for a peugeot 106, also including cost of towbar electrics, fitting ... it was at our local rapid auto;     admittedly they initially wired the lights incorrectly (they got 'confused' because it was an english car - yeah right !), but i called them and explained problem and they said bring it back straight away, and they corrected problem on spot, with an apology (and the feeble excuse above, but hey ho i may have tried the same !).
  7. thanks all - i was more worried about the summer cover than winter - and i had absolutely no idea that cats could swim; that's come as quite a shock to be to be honest!  Perhaps i had assumed that an animal with such a dislike of water would not be able to swim.

The ramp sounds like a good idea - i will do something of the kind.

oh yes, and for all those who think that cats have more sense that we give them credit for - come and swap - swap your vet bills for mine and i think you will be re-thinking that concept; sadly my cat does seem to be dumber than most !!!!

  8. have used a couple of times since paypal set up, but only on sites which i had previously used without problem (although of course thats probably not that relevant).

luckily the bank fraud department spotted it because the pattern of spending conforms with their current ongoing fraud investigations, and i am told that i have to complete a form and return it, and there should be no issue with reimbursing money, if they are confident it was fraudulently taken, so while i am wound up i am not incandescent with rage at this point in time (that will come if they don't reimbuse!)

Dont want to cast any aspersions on paypal at all, was just concerned to know if anyone else had had a similar problem.

  9. just a quick update for information.   knowing o f my problem, my neighbour kindly stopped in our local (around 40 km away) castorama for me as he was passing it, and asked them about placoplatre.   the price per sheet was around 30 cents more than brico depot (but i can live with that) and delivery (one load) would be 71 euros.     Not ideal, but would still save us several hundred euros over the local builders merchant.   You do have to go into store to order though, but delivery costs seemed reasonable (relatively speaking) for the distance and weight etc of the placoplatre.
  10. hi

i have just discovered that someone has fraudulently used by uk bank account and kindly spent £900 of my hard earned money.    Like most people i have been using internet for purchasers for some years now without problems.   The only thing which has changed is that at the end of last year i set up a paypal account (and it is the card on the account which someone has used to have a frolic at my expense).

Is anyone aware of any potential problems of this kind with paypal, or perhaps i have just put two and two together and come up with 5 on this occasion ?

  11. It is rubbish, as said.    And if you follow the excellent and much detailed advice on the forum of how to undertake the process (primarily thanks to Sunday Driver) then actually it is easy.     After listening to all of the horror stories, I couldnt believe how easy it turned out to be, as long as you ensure you read up on the process, and that you have ALL the correct paperwork ready when you start the process, then it is nothing like as complicated as some people would have you believe (possibly with exception of some makes of cars, but there is plenty of information on the site regarding that scenario also).

  12. hi all

within the next few months we hope to install a swimming pool, and i am very worried about the cat.     He (the cat) does not seem to be the quickest learner on the block, and has got himself into all kinds of problems since we have been here, the piece de resistance being recently jumping on top of the cuisiniere when it was lit (thankfully only one paw slighly burned on that occasion).

Needless to say i am now starting to worry myself stupid about the pool - his favourite places ever are under tarpaulins (of which we have too many to count dotted around for various reasons), and i am sure that he is just going to consider the swimming pool cover to be just another giant tarpaulin added for his personal pleasure and comfort.

Don't shout me down anyone, but i was considering a really drastic measure such as putting him on a harness and giving him a quick dip once the pool is filled, in order to try and teach him once and for all that the pool should be avoided at all costs.   I know it sounds awful, but we simply couldnt watch him 24/7 and i am so worried about it.

There must be lots of you out there with pools and cats, and i was wondering whether your cats avoided/tried to take a dip etc, and what measures anyone has taken?

  13. that is interesting because OH is vaguely thinking of options to keep him busy in a few years time, when we have finished renovating, and being a carpenter by trade is wondering about making up bespoke doors, windows etc.       He was taught carpentry by master carpenter more than 25 years ago, but has no qualifications as such, do you think the same would apply to him (presupposing he decides to do this at some point) regarding the 5 day course ?   eg not having to do it?
  14. pottery (the pot!)

i'm not sure its exactly fleece, its a huge sheet of something i bought in garden centre in uk, meant to be all singing/dancing.

........... clearly however its not singing or dancing at the moment, so i suppose in truth it doesnt actually matter what the stuff is !

  15. sorry no luck, in case anyone is eagerly awaiting delivery costs !

called the store and they will not deliver outside of department (we are a couple of km over border).

back to drawing board - does anyone know off-hand the size of brico depot lorries you can hire please, to save another painful conversation in pigeon french ?

  16. I used to lug it into the greenhouse but it got too big and last year it stayed in the open in uk, and soil in pot was frozen quite a few times, and it was fine.   this year i have it outside but with some stuff (cant recall the name of it, like thin tissue paper) which claims to protect down to xxx temperature.   however it is still frozen solid so i am just hoping it will survive - a month or so should give the answer.   i will feel bad if it doesnt, because all of this advice would have been for zilch - i shall probably have to pretend it survived !|!

  17. If i were you i would check out the doctor's waiting room.   I had to go not so long ago and tried my local doctor.   Into waiting room, 6 surly old men whinging about the chasse, all looking fit as the proverbial.    Being in considerable pain at the time, and having this nagging feeling that the doctor was probably also part of the chasse club and would have an hour long conversation with each, we drove 10 kilometres, to a doctor recommended by woman in petrol station (!) and i walked in to find - oh my god TWENTY FIVE people waiting (although it seems the french often take moral support to the doctor and as it transpired a lot were accompanied, so not all patients).   3 hours later i finally got my time with the doc, who was very good as it happens, albeit his first words were 'i dont speak a word of english' (not that i had asked him to as it happens).    Neither of the above doctors had an appointment system.    I am now searching for one who does, because i simply cannot bear to sit in a waiting room for 3 hours every time i need to see a doctor.   Although technically you have to register with a doctor and send form back, i havent done this yet because, as above, i need to find a nice doctor with an appointment system.   however, this does not seem to have had any effect on reimbursements - dont know why.
  18. hi all

I know this issue has been addressed before, but i wish to set up my own website.      For some reason i get a complete mental block everytime i consider doing this (and peruse the garden section instead!).

I dont understand anything to do with websites, and their setting up.   I was wondering if someone could imagine they were in dialogue with a somewhat backward 5 year old and explain to me what the simple steps are for (want of any other more technical phrase i can think of), getting your website on the web.    I read of hosting, but i dont really know why this is required (sorry i know i sound stupid and i am not normally).

If anyone could do that i would be most grateful, because i think once i have a grasp of the process i might even be able to contemplate the 'doing', although i havent got anywhere with that either.     If there are any website tehnophobes out there who have actually designed their own i would be most grateful for their ideas etc.    my first thought was 'buy a book' (which probably says it all come to think of it !), but i couldnt even understand the book titles on amazon !     well except the 'this and that for simpletons' but when i saw how many pages were in the book i had a sneaking feeling that it would just not be simple enough for me!

  19. good idea - this is my favourite so far, cheap, nice to look at (i love wood), and OH is carpenter so would take him around 5 minutes i guess to make (thats what it took  him to knock up some trellis on demand - hadnt even finished my cup of coffee before he had done !).   and you are so right about plants in containers being more striking, i rather hazardously wheeled it around (the maple that is) on a trolley to it's intended final resting place yesterday to see how it would look and i am afraid i just looked 'SMALL'!! but in a nice big pot it will look still look very striking i think.    It has always been the one plant that visitors cant seem to resist going up to, to give it a little stroke and exclaim how gorgeous it is, so i dont want it to pale into insignifance!
  20. thanks both.   i did try cuttings last year snipped off from a bush at my local lake, which is where i 'discovered' this particular hedging.   All seemed to be going well but when i took them out of pots (after a rather optimistic month or so !) and planted them, they died.    It seems i probably should have left them in pots longer, so i will try that next time.   many thanks for both your responses.
