  1. Shirley I can't help you regarding your specific area - sorry.  The price for wood seems very variable, it goes up and down like a yo yo around here.   The price is also dependent on your area.   If you budget on around 50 euros for a cord (or 4 steres) plus delivery costs, you probably won't be too far out.   However, since I have no idea what size your house is, how often you are there, and what other heating you have (or don't have) then I couldn't begin to guess how much wood you might need.   But perhaps you have an idea already.   All I can say is that last winter was our first winter here, and we chopped up what seemed a massive amount to us.   Stood, looked at it, congratulated ourselves on a job well done, and how it would keep us warm all winter.   Hit the first really cold spell and it was all gone in 2 weeks ........ we were delusional ! (sp?)

Have you asked your neighbours ?

Also, around here at this time of year, there are loads of signs up on side of road which say that burning wood is available for sale.

I am sure someone in your area can be more specific though - just that your post looked lonely, and since it was your first one, and its raining too much to continue barrowing sand, I am sitting here bored.

  2. Oh, OK rub it in then !

Mine has some saving graces, she doesn't wander away on walks, she always takes treats 'nicely' as instructed, she loves cats, she is happy to share her bed with visitors.

Think thats it.       Start tomorrow, been too busy today.

  3. It is meant to cover accidental damage to liner, electrical and flood damage to equipment, eg pump etc and public liability.

But, having not asked the correct questions I didnt find out until after I insured that it would only actually cover for 20% of the stated value of the pool for any one incident, and I wondered if this was the 'norm'.   I am beginning to think that I made a mistake.   Thankfully insurance is due for renewal end December so I can change.

  4. Choccie

We received a one-off bill for our barn and stable renovation project.   It is not called Taxe d'urbanisme but I think it is what it is.   My neighbour explained it to me as a tax you pay for offsetting any harm your project will do the environment.   I am not totally convinced of his explanation, but there you go.

My understanding, and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, is that you pay this in two instalments, the first being (if my own bill is standard), 18 months after your construction permit is agreed, and the second 18 months after the first one.

The amount will depend on the work you have declared you will be carrying out.   Our bill is 1,400 odd euros.

  5. Hi

I currently have my swimming pool insured for what seems like quite a large amount of money, and thus am investigating changing the policy.

I have contacted a couple of people and, like my own current insurance, there seems to be a clause that the insurance will only pay out for 20% of the value of the pool for the replacement cost of any item to do with the pool.   For example if your declared value of the pool is 10,000 euros then they will only pay up to 20% worth of equipment etc at any one time.

Does anyone have, or know of, an insurance policy which is not like this.    My insurance costs a fortune at moment for the pool (well, put it this way, the pool insurance costs more than the house insurance) and what with the prospect of having to pay out potentially large sums for health insurance in near future, I am trying to check all ongoing costs.

Thanks in advance for any information.

  6. Nobody is whiter than white, so lets not pretend we are.   My vices are buying wood on the black (well I assume it was because no invoice was provided) and speeding.   I habitually speed - not in huge excess.   However, if I am in a town, or a village I actually go slower than the speed limit on  occasion, IF I beleive that the speed limit is too high.   For example, if I am going through a residential estate where there may be children, I may well slow down to 30 km.   If I even see a small child at the side of the road I will slow down even more.

However, if I am driving with no-one in sight and no houses etc then I will probably do much more than the speed limit.

The difference is that I don't need to have speed limits per se, because I have my own sense of responsibility to all those around me.

Sorry, sounds really pathetic, but basically I take responsibility for both myself, but more importantly for others.  Yes, I may get caught and fined, but frankly I will live with that.

If I see a car doing seriously dangerous speeds in an inappropriate area then no I don't flash them.   If they seem to be going slighly faster than they should (by law), but are basically driving in a safe manner then I do.

Phew - feel better for that.

  7. When you walk backwards, what does your dog do ?   Sounds a daft question, but I tried it on our 'uncontrollable on lead' large mut, and she looked at me and just kept lunging forward, dragging me with her, as normal.

She doesnt really need to be on a lead around here, so I havent worried about it, but yesterday I went to some open air flower show type thingie, and there were so many dogs there, all trotting obediently around next to their owners.   My heart sank at the thought of the havoc mine would have caused in a similar situation - lurching up at people, loving them to death.   But it also made me a bit sad, because it means that she never really comes out with us (other than walks).

It is our fault, not hers, for not training properly, but I'd love to have a well-trained dog which we could trot around to be admired and petted by all and sundry (as the well-behaved specimens at the garden show seemed to be).

  8. Thanks Mikey.   Been re-reading all the info, and think we will also go for this option.

Can you help on a couple of points I have picked up.

The information says below -10 air temperature continuous filtration makes it possible to circulate water even if the ice is 10-30cm thick on top.   I don't really understand this because if the ice is that thick then the skimmer will be frozen up won't it ?    Have I missed something, because I understood that with the active option there was no requirement to put bungs etc in the skimmer opening.    Also, is your pool house heated, and doesn't the water in the pump/filter freeze ?

Finally, chemicals and checking.    Do you just use chlor choc after the water temperature is below 8c as required?   If so, do you use stabilised or non-stabilised?

And finally (ok I sneaked one more in), we have a winter security cover which we will fit in due course.   How often do you undo the cover in winter and take a peek at the water to check all is ok.    And how do you know when it isn't (sorry sounds like a daft question ).

  9. Yes, they are very good about it here in 87 (even when we had UK plates on, thereby proving the French don't discriminate!).    I think its like a little game to them.   However when we changed to French plates, our car suddenly began to look like a lot of other Peugeots with 87 plates, and we found we were being flashed almost constantly.    We flashed a thank you back and slowed down looking for the men in blue.   Took us quite a while to realise that now we were being flashed because they thought they knew us; although strangely they didn't seem to wonder why their friend (whoever it was) had started driving on the wrong side of the car !!

Thus now much more confusing, are they flashing because they know us (or think they do !) or because police are around....

I flash other drivers myself for same reason, much more than I used to England.    Very naughty of me !

  10. Frenchie - I am only mid-40s (cough cough - just over), so you may not have as long as you think.

If your mother is still alive (sorry sounds callous but don't want to make assumptions) the age at which she had menopause might be an indicator for you.   My mother had hysterectomy at early age, so she was no help !!

Oh, I think if you read the thread you will get a fair idea of what symptoms to look out for !!!  Generally look for increase in any tendency to insanity or homicidal tendencies, plus the sweating stuff, plus even more pronounced mood swings, crashing tiredness.  But then everyone gets the symptoms to a greater or lesser extent I guess.   If you don't have symptoms then don't worry about it would be my view !

By the way did anyone watch that celebrity chef programme, which was not that good, but ... anyone spot Anneka Rice standing in the middle of kitchen dismally staring around because she had forgotten what she was doing and think 'Aha !!!!!!!!!! - you're with us '!!!

And ......... I had a period about a week ago as well - but hardly worth talking about and I think its not uncommon.

  11. Hi

OH has armed himself with a nice set of chimney sweeping implements (plastic hedgehogs and flexible rods) and wishes to try them out tomorrow.   We have two chimneys both with new (year old) stainless steel liners.

Does he sweep top to bottom, or bottom to top please ?

And yes, I know it would be better to get a chimney sweep (probably) but he is convinced he can quite safely do it himself (if only he knew where to start from !).

  12. Boiling a Frog - is this the final decision, regarding the E106 expiry situation, and if so, are you aware of whether or not all those who are currently holding an E106 which is due to expire in near(ish) future, will actually be advised of the new requirements individually?

Surely there must be a large number of people who don't frequent these types of sites who may, as yet, be unaware of the whole situation?

PS:   I am more than happy to join in with any lobbying or other constructive method of trying to assist anyone with difficulties, at least at the moment while I still have some time.    Losing track a little of what is/not being organised but if there is anything constructive I can do, let me know.

  13. This made me laugh so much, and I know you will think I am making it up, but I told OH about this last evening, when walking dog, and announced I had two puncture wounds.   Let's look he said (difficult to see back of your own elbow).   Nope, he said, you have four lots of two !

Thereby I declare that I come into the 'almost indestructable' range !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Mikey

I really don't agree that WaterAir pools are easy to install.    They may be as difficult, or easy, as any other home-build inground pool (I can't say for sure because this is the first, and last, pool I will ever help to self-build!), but I don't think they are easy.       Not knocking WaterAir, their customer service before AND after has been extremely good, everything they supplied was delivered on time, in perfect shape, etc etc.

The only point I would contest is 'easy' to install.       Frustrating., hard work, difficult with just a man and a woman at times (and I am wee but strong), instructions very difficult to follow.

  15. Just to update, because I did get a pm from someone but couldn't respond and then lost it, so whoever it was apologies, but this might help you.

Finally mustered up courage to call myself.   Got the world's most unhelpful woman, who would only bleat at me 'you filled the form in' - I started to think I was talking to a parrot at one point.   Anyway, gripe out of the way.   Essentially the increase is only for our cottage - which makes the increase even greater as it happens.

I finally managed to get out of her that the last time our cottage was 'declared' was 37 years ago, at which point it was essentially derelict, eg no electricity, no water, etc.   So, it is not so much the fact (although of course it is a contributory factor) that we have added the bathroom, the increase also accounts for the fact that we now have electricity, water supply etc etc to the property.   The fact that these have been there for some years cuts no ice (understandably).

So, I suppose beware buyers.      If you ask what the fonciere and habitation taxes are when buying (which we did of course), then you may want (if its possible) to try to find out when your property was last declared, because if it was donkeys years ago, be prepared for an enormous increase when you have done any work and have to declare it.

    Hope this helps someone.

  16. And your chance of getting it from cheese is so small that I should just enjoy the cheddar.   Even if you do get it, you won't be very ill, and can't pass it on to another human (or there is no concrete evidence that you can).

But, since the law is the law, if you are not allowed to bring it in then I suppose you will have to grit your teeth and wait til its all over for your cheddar frenzy.
