  1. Just for information, my health insurer (top up policy with AGF) is now steadfastly refusing to respond to my emails regarding my right (not sure whether I have one, but that doesn't stop me trying !) to cancel my existing policy outside of the current time limits (my E106 expires January 08).   They assure me that they can provide me with a 'suitable alternative product' but seem somewhat reluctant to

    a.  provide details or costs of such product

    or

    b.  answer my queries as to what happens if said product does not meet my requirements.

Sigh ... a stroppy phone call is in order it seems.

  2. Such a shame.   We live too far away, but have a cat-loving dog, that can sniff one out at 1000 paces.

Your cat is so distinctive looking I am sure the posters will work eventually.   Hopefully someone may have taken him in.   Well, I know thats not good news in a way, but at least if that were the case he would be being cared for.   The worst is the not-knowing isn't it.

  3. As other people have said, re-check all outbuildings and ask everyone else to do the same.   Similar to another reply on here, our cat once got locked in an outbuilding and even though we went in there several times calling him he decided not to respond, for his own reasons.

If your cat has been castrated I would have thought it unlikely that he would be as far away as 3 km?

Stupid, but obvious question, did you have any deliveries that day, or see any deliveries to neighbouring properties.   There is nothing our cat likes better than to jump in a car or van.    We always have to check delivery vans before they leave, unless we can see the cat.   I once checked my brother in law's truck before he left and found the cat under the dash..

I do hope you find him.

  4. I genuinely do not see how it can be possible for the French government to differentiate between EU non-French nationals and French nationals who are carrying out the same activity.   It must be the case that there are a number of French nationals who run a Chambre d'hote or gite business.   If the business is registered, has a siret number and cotisations are paid, it's inconceivable that the government can differentiate between such a business run by French people and one run by English people.   Surely the letter receieved by Zeltus must be an error ?   Has no-one else received such a letter in a similar situation?

I have to say I don't run such a business myself, so perhaps I am missing something here, but this seems to be a very serious development if its not an error ?

  5. Now according to my theory, that is twice that 'Life is beatiful' has been mentioned amongst some of my own favourites, so I shall have to try that one, as I have never seen it (or heard of it, if I am honest).   It's first on my list to download.

  6. Oh I like this thread because I have just been advised on how to download free movies (waiting for discs to arrive).   So I am going to try some of the films mentioned - eg if anyone mentions one of same films as myself then I assume that we may have similar taste in movies, and I will try any others they put which I haven't seen.   There is a logic to it !!   Lets see if it works.
  7. Last 5 times - I've yet to have a Yorkshire rise in my life.   OH is very keen on them (me not so much) and occasionally I give in to his whimpering and try again.   I have been given several 'fool proof' recipes over the years, but clearly none of them fool proof enough for this cooking fool !

Someone once mentioned using fizzy water (err I didn't really bother to find out for what purpose exactly, because I would sure it still wouldn't work for me !).    Any idea what that was about ??

  8. Well I did originally want a cheap source of DVD's (and still do) but then I went on to ask some questions, which have been nicely answered, so thank you for your time everyone.   I think I see what the problem is now, it seems like it may be because I already had documents on the discs I was trying to use.

I shall await my new batch and try again.   I have decided to go for CD-R and DVD-R (rather than RW)  just to play safe.

    Thanks again.

  9. It was windows media player I was using (or more appropriately trying to use).   I didn't seem to have any issue with the instructions, only to the extent that it didn't work, if you get my drift !!  So I wondered if it was the discs.   I have put stuff on discs before but always documents for work etc, so wasn't sure if I needed different discs.   But you have answered my question, which is that I don't.   So perhaps just a problem with the discs I have for some reason.

I will try with new batch when I get them.   Thanks for your help.

  10. Thanks I will look at this one too, although the svp looks very good value.  I don't envisage using large quantities, and am hardly a technological genuis, so a bit of a stupid question if someone can help.

I understand difference between R and RW, but is there some special type of CD R (or RW) that I have to get to download music to, because I have a couple of old discs and couldn't manage it the other day at all (first attempt).   One only had a single document on, and I had checked and there was loads of capacity, so I wondered if I needed a special kind of disc for audio, eg to put into CD player !!

Haven't tried to download a DVD yet as I don't have discs, but can I buy any or is there something special I should be looking for (apart from the obvious, ie DVD !).

  11. choccie, I don't know if we needed one as such, but we chose to get one, ie a new meter, just to save ourselves the trouble really, and because our renovation project was very close to the road anyway.

It cost us 300 euros, which we figured was money well spent in respect of the time etc that we probably would have spent in trying to splice off the main supply.

Depending on your circumstances it might be worth getting a new meter.   Of course then you have two lots of standing charges to pay I guess.

  12. Thanks, I will pluck up courage near christmas, and also get the english speaking french one in, so he can translate if there are any ghastly misunderstandings !!!

When is good at christmas do you think, ie a few days before, when do the French start winding down for christmas ?

  13. We live rural but neighbours are within shouting distance, ie bordering us (but no in UK terms !).

We are very good friends with our next door neighbour, who is French but speaks excellent english.   We see him most days, walk his dog, look after his animals if he has to go away, etc etc, and he has helped us a lot also.    So its not really him I am thinking of, its two families who live opposite really, farming families.

I have a nice chat with woman who lives behind us whenever I see her, mainly about garden or dogs, and she did once pop over for a drink last summer when our neighbour, friend, from next door was in, but she is due to move out in next couple of months.  She told me she has sold her house to parisiens, so I suppose I wanted to get some ideas for getting to know them as well (yes I know what everyone says about them, but you never know they may be lovely).

I suppose christmas was in my mind, and I wanted to just try to get a little more involved.   The little girl opposite now goes out of her way to ride past our house several times a day in order to see me and say something, so its not that they are not friendly, and the farmer occasionally tries to pump me for information on my english speaking french neighbour, so they are approachable.

I suppose my fear, to be honest, is that they will refuse any invitation and then I will feel like a complete fool ....
