1. Steve, I do not know how much water your pool holds but this may be a possible solution to your water cost. When my pool needed draining in the UK and water is free, the company transfered all my pool water 35000 litres to temporary holding tanks adjacent to the pool and refilled the original water after completing the work.  I do not know whether in France they have these facilities but they certainly should with the cost of water.

  2. Using a fuse box with fuse wire in the UK is an indication of its possible age and that it may well be time to consider an upgrade to a modern trip circuit board. I would suggest that an Electrician should test all your circuitry and advise.

  3.
I used this sytem for the first time today between two UK accounts. I was warned it could take up to two hours to happen.

It actually took 10 minutes. Well done the UK banks as I've long been a whinger about the length of time banks hang on to money being transferred.

Yes this is very good, in fact it has been happening for some months now. I would say in many cases 10 minutes is too long between clearing Banks, I find it is usually instantaneous. Between Credit card companies and non clearing banks it usually next day or 48 hours, how the UK banks have improved.

  4. It might help as previously mentioned if  you read the terms and conditions. I think the summary  under Frequent Travellers Fares,Dates and Times gives an indication of the intended use: "As a Frequent Traveller, we can offer you our best prices for travel during less busy, "off peak" times " Possible the more flexible and higher charge "Frequent Traveller Flexiplus" scheme fits your use more appropriately.

The shuttle is generally the more expensive way to cross the Channel and the best fares are usually found on the ferries as long as you are a good winter sailor.

  5. Suey , it might seem unfair as you are frequent traveller but you are travelling at reduced fares, with Eurotunnel's loss of revenue (due to the fire) they are obviously reducing the number of frequent travellers on each shuttle. It is a reasonable business decision by them in their current circumstances. What you could consider if there are normal tickets available for the time and dates you wish to travel, you could consider moving your current booking forward (no charge by Eurotunnel) and purchasing some new tickets.

  6. I had the same problem a couple of days ago. I rang Sky who made me do a number of thing including removing the Sat cable, after 10 minutes of crawling behind th box they sent a signal and informed that the faulty had been rectified. But a couple of hours later went into standby and just by chance I found Auto standby in services, problem solved. That does show that Sky staff do not even know about the alteration.

ErnieY this does not happen to only older boxes as mine is brand new replacement of about six months.

  7. JR said: "Its a shame that the government would not have been responsible for their debts."

Why should the Government be responsible? Why should the British taxpayer be burdened?

Sad as it is, the Speedferries and its Directors are responsible for not getting their price structure right and they have known for months the likely outcome. Fortunately there is plenty of competition on the short sea crossing especially if you include Eurotunnel and LD ferries next year. If you search there are good deals around and hopefully will continue with current exchange situation and a barrel of oil below 60$.

As for my spelling mistakes - I think we should have a vote and send the results to admin regarding the introduction of spell checker on this forum (like another forum I know) Yes I know I can type in Word, then cut and paste and all manner of other things, but hey, why not make life a little more simple and help stop us making fools of ourselves with typos caused by speedy fingers over the keyboard [:)]

Neil if you use Internet Explorer then this spell check is excellent and will fit in your tool bar: http://www.iespell.com/

    Ps Now back to Speedferries

  9. There must be many people who are already booked on Speedferries and are uncertain what arrangements to make for their crossings. If it is left to the last minute then ferry fares will be expensive. I thought the following information may allow you to avail yourselves of  lower advanced booking fares on P&O, I have used this a method a number of times in the past including one crossing a couple of months ago.

Why not back both sides, because if you book P&O with Club Class, you can cancel and get a full refund if Speedferries restart their crossings(Most people are unaware of this concession.)  The Club Class option will be offered at the 3rd stage of booking after having selected the crossing date and times.

If anyone wants this confirmed, I have taken the relevent section from P&O's T&C:

"The above cancellation charges do not apply to bookings which include Club products, which can be cancelled at any time prior to travel, free of charge. This does not include bookings which include Club products booked as a 'Club Product Promotion', to which the above cancellation charges do apply."

  10. You do not indicate whether it is large sum of money. If it is, then your bank may well need a reason for this transfer as it used to be a requirement of the Bank of France, I believe to cover money laundering rules. The type of reasons that they will accept " for my pension fund" etc.  I would suggest that you contact your Bank first to find out what details they require for the transfer and then all should proceed smoothly without too much delay.

  11. As the Ryanair site is intentionally Cookie sensitive, I would always advise removing all Ryanair cookies before entering the site. They use the cookies to check your previous prices quoted so by removing them you are treated as a new enquiry. This can reflect in the new flight prices now quoted especially where they have dropped. It could also be the old cookies causing  the problems previously mentioned.

I use CCleaner to clear my cookies every time I start my computer. However, it has the facility for you to determine which cookies you want retained, for example sites such as Living France where you want to be kept permanently logged in.

What Will has written is right in the vast majority of cases, but the regulation is somewhat more complex.

There is a date in September (the exact day seems to change each year) where on the year before you reach retirement, if you are still UK resident, you will receieve the fuel allowance when you retire (which could be 16 months later).  Thereafter (and under current rules) you continue to get paid.

So in theory you could leave the UK in the year before you retire and still get the allowance provided that you were still resident on the critical day.
Andy, I am no expert but the rules appear as follows so I cannot see how leaving a year before you qualifying date would apply.

You may qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment for the winter of 2008/2009 if:

    • you are aged 60 or over on or before 21 September 2008; and
    • you normally live in Great Britain or Northern Ireland on any day in the week of 15 to 21 September 2008

  13. The problem is almost certainly due the result of the recent tunnel fire. Eurotunnel are only operating one shuttle every 90 minutes during the week and increasing to two Shuttles every 90 minutes at weekends. Their normal service can operate 3-4 shuttles an hour but that is unlikely before February 2009, so this has meant a greatly reduced capacity especially at busy times.

I thought it might be helpfull repeating my posting of 23 October for anyone booked to travel:

With the Tunnel repairs not expected to be finished until February 09, I hope these points may be helpful for anyone using the tunnel in the next few months. My comments are based on travel in both direction this week and discussions with Eurotunnel Information Centre.

I  agree with Alane comments about the crossing time, although  it is now taking from departure to arrival at least 50 minutes in both directions. The second point of information not published, to ensure you travel on your booked crossing it is advised that you check in at least one hour before departure. In fact they were calling the cars to prepare to board between 45 -50 minutes before the departure time (previously 25 minutes). I suspect any late arrivals may well not get on the train booked especially during daytime when they are running mostly fully booked and would then have to wait a minimum of 90 minutes for the next departure if there was space. Currently Eurotunnel are operating just one crossing every 90 minutes weekdays and increasing it to two crossings every 90 minutes during the weekends.

I would estimate with the increased check in times and extended crossing time the minimum time is 2 hours for the journey from arrival to disembarkation. As many people prefer this method of crossing to the ferries at this time of the year, early booking would be advised if you wish to travel especially during the day.

  15. I am surprised that some people have already winterised their pools. IMO with current temperatures in South Eastern UK at 19C today, I would anticipate them being as high in most of France it is far too early to winterise. It should be not be considered until the ambient temperature is a least below 15C or even better closer to10C. Being impatient to close too soon could result in loads of problems next Spring.
