It appears somone phoned purporting to be him and managed to answer enough security questions to arrange the transfer....
Whilst this may appear to be very worrying, but they obviously were not able to arrange a transfer for the very fact that Tesco Security were not satisfied and contacted him. It is good to see that banking security is on the ball.

  2. Not having used Ryanair for a few years, it did occur to me that Internet checking in could be a problem, but I am sure someone has the answer. Internet checking in on say the outward flight should pose no problem, but it did occur to me that the inward flight could be a problem if you are without the use of the Internet whilst away for a week or more and you also do not have a laptop, netbook or an Internet café available to you.

  3. This topic has solved a problem for me as I now realise that I suffer my drop outs moistly when it is raining. The biggest annoyance and time waster was that to get reconnected I had to close down my computer before I could reconnect. However, just by chance yesterday I found a quick method to reconnect, all I had to  do was remove the USB lead from the modem and then replace it back in.

  4.
even abroad?
Yes. This used to be a hot potato, but in 2006 this got to the Court of Appeal and it confirmed this applies to everything you buy. Whether it’s in the UK, abroad or on a foreign website, Section 75 applies.

This is a real boon, as often if you buy something abroad it’s much more difficult to get in touch with the retailer. So don’t bother, simply make a claim directly against the credit card company.

  5. I thought it might be useful to clear up this point as  many people often respond that you can claim money back from UK Credit cards for purchases worldwide under £100.

The rules are as follows: All purchases over £100 and under £30,000 made on UK credit cards are covered by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. If you pay for an item on your credit card and a problem arises (e.g. breach of contract, false information, faulty goods or non-delivery) with this purchase, the credit card company is held equally liable by law as the supplier.

The wording in the refund letter is a tad cautious saying things like.....it may be necessary to return to you at a later date should our actions be questioned or if further information is received.

Presumably this is just standard procedure to protect their position in the event that something like a Danish fairy godmother appears soon.

This very much the standard wording I have had on the occasions when I have had to claim back money form a card company. It is highly unlikely you will hear from them again regarding your situation.

  7. Firstly a card reader is only required on certain internet transactions. It is a small device into which you place your Bank, Credit or Debit card and then enter your PIN.  It then  generates a random code number which you are required to enter into your online banking transaction as a second line of defence against fraud or misuse of your cards. It is never required for any hole in the wall usage.

  8. ErnieY. I am somewhat mystified by your problem as the card readers appear to be universal. I can use Nationwide card reader for for my Natwest cards and visa versa. The readers read your card details and check your pin number and then give you the required code to carry out you transaction. So they appear to be solely activated by one's card and in fact my wife's cards work with the same readers. I hope I have  understood your problem and am not confusing you.

Even with this additional security device, I have only been required to use the Card Reader once in the last 6 months and I use Internet banking daily.

  9.
Thanks Tim.   I'd be grateful as I'm now puzzled,  particularly as Baz has got it to work.

I don't often need the news multi screen (and could get a Sky box out if I did) but it would be nice to know for certain how to get at it!

Martin, I am sorry if I have caused confusion, but OP was talking about the Sports Multi Screen and that is what I was replying to. There is no News Multi Screen  on freesat at the present time. It appears that the red button on Freesat is very limited compared with Freeview and Sky and the options available on these platforms is currently far greater.

  10. I have a Panasonic TV with the Freesat tuner built in. I can confirm that both the Multi screen function and Text services are operational and also that you can change the Multi screens to the one of your choice.

Peter, it might be worth trying out your box on someone Else's setup this will at least determine if it is your dish or the box. I would be surprised if is it is your remote as it is obviously able to change channels.

  11. There are so many posting covering swimming pools, that some of the comments should be of great help to you. I remember when I first had a pool that the guidance of a pool professional was so invaluable and I have learnt so much over the years from both my professionals and comments on this and other sites. If you are unsure, I would recommend you use services of a good recommended pool man at least for the first time you open and close, watch carefully and you will learn most of what you need to know. They will also advise on the chemicals and the testing you need to know during the season and hopefully you will not have the dreaded green pool. One most important immediate action  if you are in any area where temperatures freeze is to ensure that your pool has been winterised, the water level has been lowered and the pump and pipes have had the water drained.

In the meantime put "swimming pools" into search and you should have masses of material advise. Any specific problems just post as there are many pool owners to reply. Hope all goes well with you new French home.

Still sad to see S'ferries go under, as we always enjoyed our trips and also much easier to use Western dock as opposed to Eastern! Will also be watching for "Fare creep", now they are gone too.

With the loss of Speed Ferries and the introduction LD, there will be from next month 4 Ferry companies operating out of Dover. So one would expect with the current credit crunch and the possible reduction in the number of travellers using the ferries that competitive pricing will be maintained providing none of these companies go under.

So, how expensive is it to have an external meter installed?  And second, would I have any choice re where the meter was placed?  The current meter and electric panel are just inside our front door, and I'm not really dying to have a meter at that particular location on the outside.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It is some years since I have had this done so you will have to ask EDF about the price. There would be no need to move the meter from its current position all that happens is they run a wire to the outside of your property and a small box (about 5cm sq) is attached. The meter reader then just points his meter at the box and your readings are taken.

  14. Just a possible word of caution about buying from Strawberrynet. When I purchased from them earlier in the year in the UK, I got  charged custom duty plus an additional Post Office charge of £12 for collecting the duty. Strawberrynet who are based in Hong Kong were very good about it a refunded my extra charges, but I have been reluctant to use them again because of all the hassle. Their prices can be very good, but fortunately there are number of UK based companies some in the Channel Isles whose prices are often far better.
