It is amazing what guests will do. Perhaps, you will need to point out to future guests that the self-closing pool gate is a French requirement and must not be interfered with. I assume that you will charge for your Husband's time for the repair against their breakage deposit.

I would be very concerned if there was water in the Tunnel, it is more likely to be in the area before the tunnel entrance. Anyway this sounds like the usual Railway excuses to be added to the wrong type of snow or rain and leaves on the track.

I would advise you to inform the bank of the misspelling of your name as this will lead to all sorts of future problems including your cheques. In the first instance why not telephone the bank and point out the error as the may allow you to correct and initial the form. Even if they have to send you another form you have over 5 weeks before completion which hopefully will be plenty of time.

  4. Mike,

I think you may refering to the proposed alteration of the number terms per year from 3 to 6. Obviously each UK Council sets their own terms but most are very similar. There is no evidence that the Summer holidays will be restricted to two weeks and in fact the summer holiday will remain the same length.

To give you an idea how the the 6 term dates work from September 2005, I have given you the published list for East Sussex as an example:

"Changes to the school year from September 2005
From September 2005, East Sussex moves to a standard school year with terms of more equal length than before. There will be a fixed spring break rather than allowing Easter to determine the date of the holiday. Good Friday and Easter Monday will remain school closure days as at present. As before there will be a one week holiday in autumn, February and early summer. The summer holiday will remain the same length.

    September 2005 to August 2006
    Term 1
Monday 5th September to Friday 21st October
Autumn Holiday Monday 24th October to Friday 28th October
    Term 2
Monday 31st October to Friday 16th December
Christmas Holiday Monday 19th December to Monday 2nd January
    Term 3
Tuesday 3rd January to Friday 10th February
February Holiday Monday 13th February to Friday 17th February
    Term 4
Monday 20th February to Friday 31st March
Spring Holiday Monday 3rd April to Tuesday 18th April
    Term 5
Wednesday 19th April to Friday 26th May (Monday 1st May, Bank Holiday)
May Holiday Monday 29th May to Friday 2nd June
    Term 6
Monday 5th June to Wednesday 26th July

    September 2006 to August 2007
    Term 1
Tuesday 5th September to Friday 20th October
Autumn Holiday Monday 23rd October to Friday 27th October"

So I think both Gite owners and Ferry companies have nothing to fear.

Unfortunately air and pumps do not go together. Hopefully you have not made an expensive mistake. I suspect that all your pipes are devoid of any water and the pump is not strong enough to suck out the air. I would suggest that you attempt to manually put water back into the pipes with the use of a hose. I would firstly put the hose into the hole at the bottom of the skimmer and wait until water appears in the pump debris basket. If this fails then try putting the hose and water into the debris inlet. I would also suggest in order to get an air seal on your O ring seal that you coat it with a silcon gel or failing that with vaseline but do not overtighten. Then turn on the pump and it will hopefully pull the water through and you a back in business.

I am always learning and hope this solves your problem.

Changing the sand is fairly easy depending on the type of filter but make sure you put it back together correctly. Take care not to overfill as the excess sand can end up at the bottom of the pool. I would advise purchasing the sand from a Pool Company as they should have the special type of sand used for filters. This generally is a no. 20 silica with grains of 40-55 millimeters which have sharp edges that lend more efficient separation of the particles from the water. The sand should last for 2-3 years before changing.

  7. Bernice,

This a problem and when speaking to FT they will tell you 0800 works from the UK. From my experience the connection can sometimes be made only by using a BT line and will not work with other providers. Alternatively, your local FT office will have a direct line number, which if you send an email or letter explaining your difficulties they will let you have. I would look on the FT site for their email address.

I hope this helps as I have been through the same problem in the past

  8. This has been asked previously and with no solutions forthcoming. You must bear in mind that a Van hired in the UK will be right hand drive and consequently will no use to the hire company to rent out in France as they have to be left hand drive.

  9. I have been with this Forum from practible day one and although things have change as would be expected over the previous years, I have always regarded it as source of permanent information. However, over the past few months their has been a noticeable change in the reluctance of contributers to post valuable information. Examples of this are ...." contact me via my inbox for details" or " I have sent you a messsgae to your inbox" surely if there is useful information to divulge then post it for everyone to see. I realise there appears to be reluctance to post websites for fear of advertising, but if one has no financial connections with the sites or recommendations then why not post for all to see. If a contributer will not publish the information for all to see then why post at all?

  10. All Utility bills, Bank statements can be sent to an UK address if requested. Also do not forget to contact your Centre D'impots so they can send your Taxes D'Habitation and Fonciere also to your UK address as late payments will result in an automatic fine.

At the same time set up Direct Debits with all companies including TV licence as this will save a great deal of aggravation and prevent late payments.

  11. Basically the chips used in the UK card are a new improved system and until the French system is updated they can only be swiped. I am surprised your issuer did not tell you as they are fully aware. It could be sometime before french machines are updated and the only way you can get 24 hour petrol would be to apply for a french card.

  12. I have a Mazda and agree that reflectors cannot be fitted. If you have a model that has allows you to adjust the headlamp position, all that you have to do is set the height adjuster to lower the beam to its maximum setting. This will not blind on coming drivers and is totally acceptable. In fact Mazda recommend this as the only solution to altering the beam for right hand driving.

  14. I thought it would be interesting to give an update on Banking a Cheque at a different branch. I went to Reims with a letter addressed as recommended to post a cheque to my Branch in Narbonne. I happened to notice a Societe Generale Branch in the city and went in to ask if I could bank my cheque at their branch. Things a looking up in possibly the bigger French Banks as they accepted my deposit cheque without any problems and according to my Internet banking, my account was credited in 48 hours.

    Yorkie,
Good luck with your property and pool. I think the best answer to your question is to look at this site and firstly look at the question "Advice to new pool owners"
    http://www.ishop.co.uk/ishop/691/shopscr4.html

The good news is that a weekly check and not a daily check is required, but leaving the pool for longer lengths unattended will leave to difficuties. I learned about pools by watching the experts open and close my pool and their tips. The pump does not need to run continualy when unattended but if set daily for 6-8 hours will be enough, but a weekly check and adding chemicals if necessary is essential.

It may be adviseable until you are permently in your property to seek the services of a pool company to weekly service it. If a pool goes green it can be nightmare to correct and costly in chemicals. I hope this give you a better insight of what is required.
