1. Two possible points. I always take out car hire excess insurance with an independent company, far cheaper than using the car hire company policy and with a £600 excess charge it has to be worth it for peace of mind. The second point if you want CCTV evidence. request immediately as tapes are often reused after a very short time if no incidence is reported.

  2.
It's not all about food either, my monthly gas and electric dd payments in UK have just come up for renewal, Gas has increased from £40 per month to £130 per month, Electric from £35 per month to £65 per month. Not even going there with the increase in Council tax
You may be unfair quoting gas rising from £40 to £130 per month, although there have been increases in the UK prices but not 230%. You mention monthly DD payments, they are based on the average expected annual cost less any credit arising from previous year payments. In other words your £40 payment may have been lowered to this level by overpayment's from a previous year. I mention this as this has just happened to my electricity payments and I could understand why I had a sharp increase for the next 12 months even with electricity payments coming down in the last few months. It transpired that I had built up a credit in excess £250 in 2007-8 so they reduced my monthly payments for 2008-9 and this appeared to make my 2009-10 look like a huge increase.

  3. Temporary cookies can cause loads of problems and certainly also slow down your computer. I clear all temporary cookies that I do not want every day when starting my computer. I use ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) which is free and also sorts out other every day problems. If you need cookies for sites where you want passwords retained, then all you have to do is to go "options" in ccleaner then cookies and enter cookies to keep. I find the best way for the first time is to go into all the sites where you want to retain cookies then move from cookies to delete to cookies to retain.

I assume you are referring to Freesat and you can get both BBC and ITV HD for free with more free HD to join. One other advantage is that some UK Panasonic TV's have the Freesat and HD tuners built in. I have found this a great advantage as there are no extra boxes and wires.

  5. When I  bought my house near Narbonne in 1989, I did a lot of furnishing purchases on a Sunday. A number of out of town shops were open on Sundays after 2pm for I think 4 hours. But the regulations regarding Sunday openings stopped this practise some time later although Sunday Markets were still allowed.   Providing workers have the choice whether they work Sundays and are fairly remunerated, then the public can choose whether they shop. France has allowed many sporting events on Sundays so IMO the country been very behind in its trading laws.

Try reading the code of conduct for this forum. Very much like many others it has this line..

Please do not advertise or post your personal details, products or services on the message boards. Any advertising without permission will be removed.

Poolguy, has and does sometimes offer up useful info but its mainly so that he can "net up" some possible sales.
Forums are for discussion and debate( just as you & I on this subject) not for selling services.

Steve, why are you nitpicking? Poolguy has offered a great deal of advice on this forum on a subject that many people often require help.. Yes, we know he is in the pool business, but he only invites anyone that has a problem that he cannot answer directly  on the forum to contact him or sends a PM, so the choice is entirely  the poster's whether contact is made or not. I cannot see why you are quoting the code of conduct as as far as I can see he is not breaking any of the rules.

For a forum to be successful it needs people who can supply correct information, so we should support these members. If they get some business as a result of their free advice given then that IMO it is a fair reward.

Last time I deleted cookies, it took all my passwords off at the same time. Couldn't access bank accounts or Living France[6] until I had contacted both of the providers. And I only selected the cookies I wanted to delete NOT the passwords one.

Why not try CCleaner it will remove all temporary cookies every time you open up your computer, you can also choose the cookies you do not want to remove so this will prevent any lose of passwords.  I have been using this cleaner for a few years now and would not be without it. I know there are a number of people on this site who also use it.

  8. Check your multi valve port, if it is not seating perfectly some of the water might be going waste and not completely circulating. If you look a the waste glass and there is water passing through when circulating then that is the problem and a fairly simple item to service and fix.

  9.
I get very annoyed every time the IPlayer adverts pop up on the TV - shouldn't they have to put in a disclaimer about not being able to access it from certain IPs, like car insurance adverts used to say 'not available in N Ireland'?
Why should they, UK Tv officially should not be viewable outside the UK boundaries as their licences do not permit it.
What about those who pay a BBC licence fee, but can't 'catch up' when they are at their French second home? Maybe someone should take up the issue with the Advertising Standards Authority www.asa.org.uk ?
The ASA would not be interested as they are not doing anything wrong. The BBC licence only covers the UK, the same as the French licence covers only France.

  10.
Thanks!  And, a supplementary, if I may, as I am just writing instructions for those not used to phoning "abroad".  I presume if people want to call me on the mobile, no matter whether they are calling from the UK or France, they have to treat it as a French number and use 00 33?
Do remember if you are in the UK using your French sim card in your phone and somebody calls from France or the UK you will be paying for the international connection charges and they will just pay their normal call charges.

  11.
Is it that straight forward to change wires from UK to French? Serious question as I still use adaptor plugs;
Using adaptors on anything that is high wattage can be very dangerous as they can melt and catch fire. Adaptors are designed for temporary usage on low wattage appliances such as electric shavers, phone chargers, laptops etc. I would recommend that you consider changing you UK plugs to French plugs ASAP.

  12. I have traveled to and from Narbonne by motor rail in the past and even 1st class (not certain whether that is available today)  it is not a journey I would ever consider again. It was not very comfortable, compartment was hot, no evening meal supplied so you had to take your own and 13 hours on a train IMO is not too pleasant in cramped surroundings. With auto routes from Calais to Narbonne get in the car and drive, I stop at a very comfortable hotel in Langres and have down the journey dozens of times.

  13. Having been in this situation in the past, this is the method I used. The Notaire transfers the Euros to your French Bank (normal practice but this can be delayed whilst tax is calculated) and you should arrange the transfer from your French Bank  to your receiving bank using money brokers who will agree exchange rates beforehand (usually very good) and charges. I assume that as this will be a sizable amount that you will have to confirm with your French Bank their requirements which will include money laundering checks for the Bank of France. Provided you complete all the requirements for the Notaire and the bank in advance the actual transfer should take just a few days and with very little hassle.

  14.
Is there anywhere Ryanair fly where you cannot get your hands on a PC or visit an internet cafe these days ?
Anton, I agree with your response, but the important point is that shortly when you check in via the internet you will be charged £5 per person. Ryanair say that the removal of check in desk will save them money so charging for check in will make even more.

Teapot, stated " Just the usual daily wail moan." I am sorry to disappoint you but similar reports have been published in the Times and Telegraph.

IMO the only reason that Ryanair get away with their inflated costs, is purely because they choose in the main to fly to airports not covered by other operators and have got themselves captive travellers. They are no longer a Low Cost transporter and often the National carriers on similar routes offer far better value, but they can be praised for their clever marketing and opening up Europe to the air traveller.
