  1. Never seen the ad either (we use Adblock plus).  What we do have are two whirling stars on the right of the page clearly trying to load - they never succeed...

A notaire I was talking to on Thursday said; "Why are you not using Britline?" I told him we had never felt the need and had opened our accounts at a local branch of Cr. Ag. when we bought our house in 1995.  He continues to think us very odd, but that is his problem.

  2. On the assumption that this is a real request and not a wind up - all the informnation you need is in the FAQ just above this thread.

You will need to go to the place you want to marry before you can even start paperwork, blood tests etc.  Far too late now for May I think.

Why do you want to marry in France - if that is not an impertinent question. If your girl friend is French, or you are, then that will make a difference.

  3. AnOther: you do not, apparently, have to wait until the end of the tax year for a one-off like the pension pot cash in. A former member of this forum found this out which is why I sent an R43 off in January - hoping I would not have to wait until April!

Normally a paper R43 (can't do it online) takes several weeks to process as you found.

Doing a Self-assessment form online means you get the refund automatically in about 4 to 5 days. If you have not received it by then something has gone wrong because the file is untouched by human hands.  The only year it was a longer wait I telephoned and was told I had been "chosen" as a random check!  I think actually that we were one of the first to do it that year (on 6th April) and they were checking that the software worked...

  4. Exactly right Daft Doctor.  We were told explicitly that we should continue to file a S. A. form in the Uk. In any case it enabled us to get back (quickly) tax deducted on some savings that are still in the Uk. One can use an R43 for that if not filing a tax form but it is very slow.

Filing online gets the tax back in days to a UK bank account.

  5. I am not sure I understand why you think we need a different form. We have lived in France for 14 years and did the double tax treaty form back then.  Because of property income in the UK I have to do a self-assessment form there as it is taxed in the UK. All  income is then on a French tax return (double tax treaty sorts out tax on property income). The pension cashed in will go on our UK form so as to get the tax back as instructed by HMRC today and will be taxed, and probably CSG'd, in France.

As it happens even with CSG we will pay less tax on it here in France.

Thanks for your input though, it could be what other forum members need.

  6. I took in January this year the whole of a very (very) small pension pot.  Following what other people on this forum had done I sent off a form R43 to Leicester to get the tax back.

Having heard nothing I telephoned them today and was told that a letter is winging it's way here (apparently sent two weeks ago so coming via Scandinavia obviously).

The letter, I am told, says that as I am required still to complete a UK tax return - even though we are tax resident in France - I should claim my pension tax back on that form not a separate R43.

Others may well be in the same boat. It means that if you take a pension pot after 5th April this year and you are required to fill in a UK tax form you will have to wait until 2017 to get a refund of tax.

I always do my UK return online on 7th or 8th April so only have a month to wait now anyway and at least I know the money will then be repaid within a week.

  7. Cheque emploi works well and once you get going is easy.  The amount shown (as tax deductible) on the statement really is set against one's tax not income - so one only gets credit for it up to the amount of the tax due.  A statement will be sent to you at the end of the tax year from CESU for each employee and it tells you both the total amount and in which boxes to enter it on your tax return.

Note: The amounts of costisations for both employee and employer differ if either is over 65 (or at least that was the age when we last used it).

Not relevant in the OP's case but:   If you pay a "carer" for an oldie you can set an amount against your tax too in the same way as if they paid it themselves. If the oldie gets APA then you have to use CE unless using an agency. We have done this and copy payslips (shown above in the example) are sent to the Social services to prove you have used the money!

  8. As cats etc were attacking our rubbish bags when out for collection we bought from a garden centre some stuff for repelling cats and dogs.  I don't have the name to hand as it is in the garage but I will post the proper name later.

It works a treat on the rubbish bags.  We sprayed it too all around the area up the lane where we put the bags and animals avoid them. Presumably a scent they don't like.

If you can find some and were to spray around your house it might work!!

  9. Sid:  Being able to vote in France for local elections does not stop you being registered in the UK for national elections. The government website re registering to vote specifically says that anyone registering can vote in the referendum.  This assumes that you were registered somewhere in the UK not more than 15 years ago of course!

    For the government site:

Don't know why this is in italics now... and can't get out of it.

I have no idea how to make clickable links so perhaps some kind person would do it if necessary.  Sorry.

  10. We did not get any interest even though the letter talks about it!

Glad it has all worked out in the end.

One of our friends (who has not made a claim for back years yet) has been told not to pay this year's amount which is interesting.  We are in the same tax district but have been told nothing about the current year.

  11. A staff member at our local branch of NW (in Eastbourne so not a small town) told us - when asked if we could fill in a form to get our interest gross - that it was not NW that deducted the tax but HMRC so we should contact them.

At that point we gave up - such ignorance is impossible to argue with.

I subsequently found out that none of the big banks will use the form for non-residents to get their interest gross. There is one, although I forget it's official reference number, and it is not the one that says "I am not a taxpayer" which one can use if living in the UK!

  12. As the others have said there is no problem in keeping both account(s) and the credit card open. But as with the other banks it is hard if not impossible to open a new savings account.  They would not let us open a savings account that gave a higher rate for "loyal customers" which really annoyed us!

The credit card gives a very good rate on purchases outside the UK. We use it anywhere but the Uk and a Barclaycard when in the Uk to make sure we do not lose that one.

  13. We have had TNT for several years but for the past few weeks a message has come up every day (!) that from April TNT will be broadcast in HD and that our tv, which is not HD, will not be able to get it.

As complete non-tv tech people we are not sure whether this means:

    1. We will continue to get TNT but it will look as it does now  OR

    2. We won't get anything.

Our local "Expert" shop is having open days about this soon but we don't want to go unless item 2 above is what will happen. We are not bothered about HD as we don't watch much tv at all.  We suspect that the shop will want to sell us a new tv.

Or, quite possible, is it the TNT box which needs to be changed? We still would not have an HD tv of course.

Any help from the tv watchers on here most appreciated.
