  1. Good morning

We can see in a tree an asiatic hornets nest. The tree is in the field next door to us but only about 20 or so metres from our house.

The field was owned by someone who lived away (we think he has now died!) but is used by a chap from our village to raise his sheep

    .

We will, of course, try to see the sheep owner but in the meantime does anyone know, please, do we just go to the mairie and report this? Our mairie is now only a sub-mairie with a maire delegué but is open a couple of hours a week or we could go to the main commune.

The nest is no problem at the moment but...

    Many thanks

    H.

  2. My Dad has one (aged 93 with a bad heart but not "disabled" as such). Sealed special questionnaire from the doctor and completed form* to be sent off. Then wait two months (in Manche anyway) then when they say OK send photo. Badge then comes within days.

Seems a bit longwinded but well worth the effort.

*Form (when we did it two years or so ago) covered all sorts of things and one had to pick out the bits that were relevant - not user friendly. The Mairies are helpful if you find the form difficult - or so I am told - although we had no problem with the form.

  3. Hi Lehaut

Did you go to the Polyclinique in Avranches? My Dad aged 93 wants an appointment so we were going to ask his MT for a letter in the hope the appointment would be quicker!  At 93 he wants his new specs "now".

    Thanks

    Mrs H.

  4. Useful information re disabled drivers, thank you.  Our sticker has arrived and has been duly stuck on the windscreen.

What has occured to us though is: what a pity the stickers are not "EU" stickers.

We needed a German sticker last year as we were going into Cologne and possibly other cities that need them so we have a big green German sticker. Now we have a pretty lilac (smaller) French sticker.

When we drive to Germany to see our daughter and family we drive via Belgium and Holland and  stay overnight in a city on the way as part of a holiday, will we eventually find we need Belgian and Dutch stickers too? We have visions of a row of stickers on our windscreen! Bit like re-inventing the wheel...

  5. My mother died here in France two years ago. She wanted no religious service. We had a cremation, no clergy. I said a few words and we has some music. That's it.

It is important to think about music even with just the crematorium. We put some on a USB stick.

One cremation (again no clergy) had a tv/monitor which had a slide show of photos. I did not like that  myself and her son looked very upset as photos of him and his Mum went by.

Do whatever you like as far as we can see.

  6. You may find a Notaire not helpful about a Will under this new regulation. The one we used when my mother died (and then asked about my father making a Will under this rule) said "it will never work as I cannot probate a Will in the UK".

He is probably wrong about it not working but I would love to hear from anyone that it has actually worked!

The six days can be a pain but is the rule.  The French often have a Mass later as a memorial service if family cannot get there quickly.

  7. Idun:  CESU automatically includes 10% for holiday pay.

Last time we used CESU we did it all online and certainly did not register formally as an employer. We used my Mum's APA to pay carers by CESU - as we were instructed to by "Social Services".

Thanks for all the help and info.

  8. Thanks for answers - we were planning to pay 10 euros net so we seem to have had the right idea.  The lady will only work a couple of hours a week.

I shall have to thiunk about a contract, the job will almost certainly continue as long as dad is alive - he refuses absolutely to go to hospital!

  9. Does anyone here pay a "home help" (cleaning, laundry odd meal cooked) by CESU please?  My Dad likes to pay a fair wage and above the minimum.  The figure needed is the "net" as that is how CESU works,  the net pat (paid) is entered online and the program grosses up and calculates the cotisations.

If anyone pays a gardener this way that would be interesting too.

    Many thanks

    Mrs H

  10. Sorry to come late to this thread.  I read it originally but did not think the above part (per NormanH) was of great interest to us any more as we were not currently paying anyone by CESU.

However my father (93½) is going to be employing a "home help" from January and we will ceratinly be using CESU for that.  It would make a huge difference to him if the fiscal advantage changed from money off his tax (no benefit as no tax payable) to a credit d'impot.

This change would be logical too as those who need help are not always the better off!

I should take more notice of these things but does anyone know whether these changes to the tax regime in 2017 are going ahead please?

    Many thanks

    Mrs H

  11. Mint:  I bought three different itmes just this last week with Amazon.fr and paid for all three with NW card and it went through as euros so rate decided by NW.

Two items were second hand books (so each one goes through separately even if bought at the same time) and one was the battery that is now in this laptop!

We have money here in France but using the NW card gets us a better rate than transferring more money! We are often amazed as the rate is close to the spot rate you see on tv screen scrolling along the page. (We don't have UK tv except for BBC World on our TNT box but they show exchange rates when business news is on).

I will need to buy more books soon so will see if system has changed.
