  1. If you do go and see an accountant make quite sure he/she understands where to enter any UK income. Being accountants ourselves we went to one to get our first French return filled in and were told that some exempt (rental in UK) income should just be ignored... We were not at all convinced so went to the tax office and they completely re-wrote the form for us and the answer came out as we had expected. Wasted the money on the accountant!!!

  2. Here in Manche all along the route of the new THT line Loxam portaloos are on the site of every other pylon being built  - try their website perhaps!  Or ask around for a chemical "camping" loo from a tent owner - we bought one when we first came over to start clearing our house for the builders to start.

  3. Bearing in mind that not everything can be translated word for word (lots of things in fact!) could some kind person offer a French phrase for the following please:

"He is at the end of his tether and is unable to cope any more"  (context: caring for someone with dementia 24 hours a day)

Note: I thought I had posted this just now but it did not appear so I hope it is not in twice.

    many thanks,  Mrs H

  4. Using Windows XP with Firefox 11.

Colours difficult, black on dark blue on headings very hard to read.

Some of the postings in this thread seem to be on a white background, some on pale blue. How do I get them all to look pale blue, much easier on the eye.

Preferred the old version, no technical difficulties at all, no "white space" etc. Lavender fields only show in less than 1/4 inch down the edges but seem pointless.

  5. Sorry we don't have a link to any site where you can get this confirmed, but it certainly worked in our case. Husband over 65, wife less than 60. Our CPAM seemed to accept it.

We cannot remember exactly how it worked. Have another go at CPAM or phone Newcastle again??

  6. Just had our (first) French tax bill, which we cannot understand! Have appointment next week to see "controller" who dealt with our file as the first lady we asked in our tax office couldn't explain our schedule as she couldm't understand the figures either......

Is this 10% social tax added to the normal tax or does it come on a separate bill please? If it is added to tax then this could explain the amount on our bill, which seems a lot higher than the figure we read off the "bareme" in the book we have.

    Thanks

  7. LAST EDITED ON 23-Jul-04 AT 11:10 AM (BST)

I swopped a new "pink" UK one but even so the "letters" are apparently different. When I took mine to be done the lady said "do you want to tow a caravan"?!!! I said no definitely not, just a car. My licence came and only shows car and small van. We then took my Father's licence in to change (age 81), the (same) lady asked no questions and his has come showing him able to tow a caravan until next April (which is when his UK licence would have run out). Perhaps she thought men more likely to tow - but at 81 !!!!!

  8. The Mutuelle just need to know what "regime" you are under, in your case it is obviously CPAM as you say you will get 100% cover and presumbably are not employed. The money comes from your bank account! We were asked this question when we were trying to get quotes and were very confused until we worked out what they were asking. We wonder if the premium with the Mutuelle is different depending on your regime.

Why do you need top-up if you are on 100%??

  9. Are you looking for someone to take them away to a hive or do you just want to get rid of them?

We had a nest last week in our chimney - bees all over house (I have to say we thought at first that they were wasps). The Pompiers came within half an hour, Charge will be 30.49 (old 200 francs!!)

The Pompiers confirmed my suspicion that they were in fact honey (?) bees. I looked in yellow pages under "apiculture", there is no-one in Brecey. there used to be one in Juvigny-le-tertre but he is not in the new 2004 book.

  10. Hello

Could anyone tell us what the cost of the annual chimney sweep should be please?

We have just had a visit from a "travelling" chimney sweep, who "passed by". He gave us what looks like a proper receipt (he said we needed this, as we knew, for insurance purposes). His charge was 70 euros. He used our screwdrivers (not sure what for), our rubbish sack, torch (!) and our dustpan and brush. No vacuum, just brushes.

We took the precaution of writing down his van number and we know his name and telephone number. Is 70 euros the right sort of price or were we diddled..........

    Many thanks

  11. I have seen reference to "Moneybookers" on this forum. Could anyone who has experience of them please let me know (to in-box if you prefer)how they got on. I need to transfer money from UK to France and occcasionally UK to Germany or Canada.

Their website looks very promising but would be glad of feed back from users!

    Thanks

  12. Hello

Our magazine arrived here in France on Friday 5th, so service improving!

    However, two little niggles:

Why does the "travel club" only advertise a UK 0870 number, which we cannot use from here in France! Although many readers, probably the majority, are UK based not all are and we like to return to the UK to see family and friends.

Also the questionnaire enclosed had a reply paid UK second class franking on it.Again no use to us who live in France. As the magazines are obviously sorted so that overseas addresses are correctly stamped is it not possible to enclose a differently printed version of qustionnaires?

Anyone know how to contact the travel club from France?

    Many thanks

  13. Hello everyone

Has anyone out there managed to find top-up insurance for the elderly at anything other than a huge price? I am looking for top-up for one 79 year old and one aged 80 (not us!). One mutuelle we have asked ( who will not take over 80's) quotes 1188 euros p.a. for the eighty year old, another quotes 864 euros p.a., in each case to cover basic level of hospital care and normal continuing care. The second quote seems relatively reasonable but in view of the huge difference between the two we feel we must look at as many as possible!

    Any help gratefully received

  14. I have been asked by a friend in the Uk who is retiring to France soon to enquire about Top Up insurance when income is low. I think that if you are working and have a very low income you get "free" top up insurance (via CPAM??). The people concerned will be over 65 and qualify for a Carte Vitale. Does anyone know if this "free" top up can apply to a pensioner with a low income - say a slightly enhanced UK state pension and very little more?

If you can get "free" top up on a low income can anyone tell me what "low" means please? I think I have seen figures for "after tax allowances" (again when working) but am not sure what the gross income figure would be for a pensioner.

    Many thanks
