  1. Chancer: The "Creme au Marscapone" by Elle et Vire is fantastic.  Does indeed whip with just a dessert spoon of suger (no nasty fixe).  We use it a lot and no-one at all has ever noticed it is not "all" cream.

Super on a trifle or apple pie etc.

Watch out on the supermarket shelf though as some E et V cream is in a very similar packaging and they are usually next to each other.

    Enjoy it.

  2. My microwave book says:

Mix 10 oz icing sugar with one egg white to make a soft dough. Knead until smooth and shiny. Pat the dough into a 6 inch circle and cook on full setting for 3½ to 4 minutes.

When cool top with pear halves and drizzle with melted chocoltae.

Could this be adjusted to use in your custard Idun? By making small circles and cooking for a shorter time.

  3. Don't have UK tv (only TNT) so can't comment on the above! On Sunday we watched a wonderful concert (admittedly recorded) from Arras cathedral by "Les Prêtres" (actually two priests and an ex-seminariam) with a super choir as accompanying them.

Yesterday evening we watched "les Vacances de M. Hulot" - 1953, a classic and hilarious.

Do we miss UK tv ? - no we don't, nor the endless newspapers we felt compelled to read as we had paid for them.  I'd rather read a book.

Get non-French news when we feel like it from radio 4, BBC website and BBC world on TNT.

Keep up the postings folks or we shall all be abolished.

  4. http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/december-solstice.html

Certainly the shortest day in our bit of France (Manche) is today 22nd. See website above (don't know how to make it clickable - sorry) - it can be 20, 21 22 or even 23 December in the Northern hemisphere.

Anyway - the days will get longer from now on, even though the mornings are darker until about 6th January.

    Merry Christmas to you all.

  5. The most annoying thing we had with the money laundering is that "a big high street bank" in the Uk insisted that we take passports and proof of address in person to the bank.  We were going to the UK a few weeks later so took passports and Tax fonc. bill for address.  The unhelful girl we saw said that she could not accept a foreign document...  Lots of phone calls later to various bank depts. and she was told "yes you can".

We received a few weeks ago a letter from the same bank saying "next time you are in the branch" please show us your passports. They will have a long wait as we don't plan to go till next summer. Too bad.

  6. We were never asked about our marriage regime so can't answer that. A UK marriage certificate does not show what "regime" you are under.  Have you done a French marriage contract changing your regime to "Communaute universale" (ignore poor spelling please), if not then you are "Separation de biens" I think.  That is: "what's mine is mine and what's yours is yours!

Did you send copies of the Avis from the Impôts relating to each year? That shows what the income was that they charged CSG on.

  7. Not sure about "no extra charge" but the bank will have to have it cleared as a "foreign" cheque. This is what I was told when I wanted to send a cheque to Germany (to family there). In fact German banks look askance at cheques at all!!!

I still think it would be easier to get the Spanish bank to send payment using IBAN number. Very quick and (the other way round) Credit Ag. charge 3 euros if they process it. Do it your self and it is free.

  8. A cheque for our refund arrived in the post this morning from the "higher ups" who processed the claim. Don't know why it was not paid directly into our bank account - details of which they have.

Ah - sending a cheque delays the date that they are debited...

So for us the saga is over, we shall wait and see what happens on the 2015 income.

So: to all those waiting, "bon courage" it does work!

Thanks as always to Parsnips who kept us informed all along.

Edit: the cheque is dated 7th December.

  9. No: you do not need to make the trip to France! Do as Chancer said and make an IBAN transfer from your bank account (in Spain presumably). IBAN transfers within Europe are free if you are able to do it yourself online but with a small charge if the bank process it.

In our French bank I can set up a new payee within France but "abroad" ones need the bank to set it up on our account. Even then  I always make the actual transfer myself as it is then free of charge (annoys the bank too...)

Even if Spanish banks charge it will be cheaper than a trip.

  10. A few years ago we had to send a document to the Uk in order to get the keys released for a property we own when the tenant went broke and abandonned the building. The document went to the liquidator of his business.  I asked at La Poste as we wanted the doc to arrive asap.  I had to pay about 30 euros but it was guaranteed to be delivered in 24 hours and appeared to be passed almost from hand to hand.

Ask at your local La Poste and see what they say.  I think it was that I wanted it delivered asap that prompted the post lady to suggest this service.

  11. Gardengirl: I read that to mean that you are tax resident in the Uk and not France - in which case you should certainly get the WFA. If your husband does not just because it is being sent to France that surely would be wrong in the opposite way to my original post!!

    Fascinating.

  12. Interesting point came up today in an email from a friend here in France.  We had known that we would not get the WFA this year but apparently someone living near her has just received this allowance.

This person lives here in France permanently but has her OAP paid into a UK bank account.

It has been suggested to us that by having the OAP paid in the Uk as opposed to here in France the allowance will be received as in previous years.

OH said when hearing this:  "Surely even that peabrained lot over there are not that thick".

We think it more likely that the person receiving the allowance is not fully in the system here - to put it politely.  Anyone else had their WFA paid to a UK bank account whilst living in France?

If so then "they" really are peabrained.

  13. Our letter from the appropriate office saying that we will get a refund (as I posted earlier) certainly took two months but that is normal for a reply from any functionary.

We have still not had the actual refund and there is no sign of anything about it on our online impôts file. We may email the named person who wrote the letter of agreement to us (email and direct telephone number were given) and ask whether we have to wait two months for the money as we have two months to appeal against his decision...

  14. Having spent years sending post to HMRC (we are both accounants) we always either staple all documents together or if too "thick" put them on a green treasury tag. This makes it harder for "them" to lose bits of a letter.

We did this with our claim for the Social Contributions and had no queries.  You should enclose both copies of E121/S1 and also copies of your fiscal statement for each year.  This makes it harder for Les Impôts to prevaricate.

We have never seem Treasury tags in France but make sure we keep a supply from the UK! Even threading string through the package would do.
