  1. I stand corrected. The theme that I found again, says that you can get FRENCH subtitles on the French programmes, not English.

Anyone that saw 'Jean de Floret' and 'Manon de Sources' on TV recently, I am sure would agree that it is very instructional to hear spoken French and read the English underneath.

I will therefore keep an eye on BBC4 where they regurlarly have foreign films with the subtitles. But thanks for the info, even if it was not what I wanted to hear![:(]

  2. I read somewhere in this section that it is possible to get English subtitles on French TV programmes, if you have Teletext. I have tried to find this theme again but with no success! Can anyone explain to me how I can enable this process on my  French (Thompson) TV set.[:D]

I sometimes see French films on BBC4 with subtitles and find it very helpful to gain more knowledge of the language.

  3. Thank you eveyone for all the information and I will await my next visit to the CPAM when I will make enquiries regarding having a 100% MOT.

My car gets 'done' every two years, but I have never had such an examination since joining the Royal Navy back in the distant past. I suppose I had better get myself seen to, else the car might outlive me!

  4. Another plea for information! When I was domiciled in the UK, one could go to your doctor and ask for the above detailed examination. It might be possible on the NHS or privately it might cost you £200 approx.

Does anyone had experience of having such treatment and is it covered by the French health system plus any top up insurance?

My health is not too bad at the moment other than the usual old age complaints, but forewarned is forearmed!

  5. Hi Graye,

Do not despair! There are a lot of towns in France that have an 'English Shop' and they sell loads of veggie products. We shop in the 'Cockleshell' in Ruffec and Jane the proprietor is very obliging and if there is something special, which is not in stock, she will order a quantity of it for you!

But normally they stock all Linda Mc. products and separate quorn products. We have been in Restaurants here which have Veggie meals on their menu. The word is going around that it is a growing trend in France and more outlets will stock the food we perculiar people need.

It has been said, 'that if everybody had to kill an animal to eat meat, there would be a lot more vegetarians!'

    Bon appetite. Lautrec.

  6. Thank you Nick! Very informative reply, which does give us something to think and to act upon.

I will start making tentative overtures and see how the land lies! It certainly makes more sense to develop and build it yourself and the word 'grant' made my ears prick up! I suppose also, that my bank would consider a mortgage on a new build such as this!

If you have any more information to add, I would appreciate it and to hear from anyone else who has already done this!

  7. We have a large garden; set out mostly as lawns and trees; which is now proving too much work for me to keep neat and tidy. It would be advantagous to me, in more ways than one,  if I could obtain planning permission on the unwanted half and to put it on the market as a building plot.

So how does one go about approaching the Maire to take steps in this direction? Should one approach our immediate neighbours first to guage their reactions? It would be nice to hear from anyone who has already gone down this road!

  8. To all booklovers!

Over the past two years, I have read and retained many paper back. I now have about three cardboard boxes full of nice clean modern books by all the popular writers.

If there is anyone else who is in the same situation and would like to swap box for box and who live in the Charente, not too far away from Ruffec - Champagne Mouton area and would like to contact me, possibly we could arrange a meet and do a changeover. I am afraid that using the postal service would prove quite expensive!

  9. Hello Pauline,

We feel that we must reply to your letter, which we have only just seen today. From everything that you say, we think that France will work for you! We are in the Charente and live in a French hameau with charming French neighbours but there loads of ex-pat Brits in this area. Beautiful quiet rural countryside amd house prices still not too expensive.and plenty of space for your animals.

There are plenty of day to day activities which you can join in with. Also there are Drama Groups, Choirs, arranged trips and social dinner evenings at local restaurants. There is very good state medical system, and in a lot of areas, the Brits arrange back-up support!

We are well served with low-cost flights to the UK from local airports. You mention that you are begiining your search in the Tolouse area, which we understand is a beautiful area, but the Midi-Pyrenees is rather expensive!

If there is any further info that you think we may be able to help you with; please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Good luck!

    Regards

    Maxine.

  10. I downloaded for free the Photobucket from the Internet. I found when attempting to use it for the first time that it was full of adverts trying to persuade me that my computer was vunerable to spyware and I should download one of their anti-spyware systems forthwith. When I tried to ignore them, it persisted and I was made aware that I could not get rid of these promptings, no matter what action I took.

So without more ado, I uninstalled the programme as it would appear to be  a potential danger to my PC. Did anyone else have the same experience?

  11. I have been asked by an aquaintance in the UK if I could obtain details of any permanent residential Mobile (or Park) home sites in SW France. between La Rochelle and Royan, near the coast!

From the Internet I have found only two; Haven Europe and Breakaway Homes near Bordeaux. If anyone has knowledge of any more sites like these, I would be very obliged if you could pass on the information to me. Thank you!

  12. This subject I found very interesting as I have had this complaint last Summer and now again in the past two weeks!

The contributing factor to the both, is that it seemed to appear soon after I cut my grass with my motor tractor. The first time I wore shorts and my right leg came out in the described blisters but this time I wore long trousers, but was bare-armed and the blistering is on my right arm. As the tractor throws out the mulched grass to the right, it would appear that their was something in the cuttings which caused my problem!

So the next time, I will cut the grass completely covered except for my face. It wouldn't matter if I got it there, as my wife says, that any change would be an improvement!
