  1. Merci Jane,

What you say makes sense. A needle in the wrong pressure point could be harmful. I see  there are four practitioners in the local yellow pages, but they are all in the middle of Angouleme. I was hoping for some one more local. But needs be when the devil drives and I will make an appointment if nothing else turns up! Thank you anyway for your input!

  2. Suffering as I do from arthritis, I found that I could get relief through acupuncture when I was domiciled in the UK. I was wondering therefore if anyone knows of a acupuncturist within  a 30k radius of Ruffec, in the Charente.

I am aware that there are some in Angouleme, but there is a chance that there now might be some ex-pats newly arrived in this area with the neccessary qualifications and as yet not registered in the yellow pages! I wouldbe very grateful for any information from a practicioner or a patient!

  3. Greetings to all avid French book readers!

I agree with most other readers of Carol Drinkwater's books. My wife read the first two, but I, a mere man, gave up before half way through the first one.I had one of my yawning attacks! But as stated there are books and there are books, but the ones that we have really enjoyed were written by Susie Kelly.

The titles of which are ' Best foot forward' and 'Two steps backward' The first tells of her heroic walk from La Rochelle to Geneva and the second is all about her arrival in France and converting a ruin into a habital property, complete with her menagerie of pets!

We both found them very interesting and uplifting! Try them!

  4. Dear Legal Forum,

Calling all armchair solicitors! If one should lose a case of litigation in a UK court, could you avoid paying costs if you were living in France? I always understood that if it was a civil matter, you could not be made to pay such costs if you were outside the UK. I don't think the baliffs would cross La Manche anyway!

  5. When I bought my household to France, I was quoted originally, by a Cornish removal firm; £3,400. So we hired a Luton Van locally and a friend of mine drove me down to The Charente. We unloaded and took the van back to the UK. The following week I returned to France with my wife in the car and settled in our rented accommodation.

Hire of the Van £259. Fuel about £70. Ferry £250. With meals and incidentals, the whole exercise cost about £700.It was an enjoyable experience, even more so when you considered the money saved! It is worth investigating!

  6. Dear Forum,

I have some friends from the UK visiting shortly and as wine connoiseurs, they have asked me what would be the maximum allowance of this sweet nectar that they are allowed to take back home? Ciggies do not come into the equationas as both are both non-smokers!

There has been much talk about the duty free allowances in the media, I must admit that I am totally confused on this matter. Any answers would be very welcome!

  7. Have been charged unknowningly for all my telephone calls both with One Tel and France Telecom; the fault lying with OneTel.

Registered letters and many E mails have gone unanswerd my the guilty party and now I read on the internet that the mother company in Australia has gone into liquidation and OneTel France is now under legal rectification (whatever that is!)

This now explains why my mail has gone unanswered, but they are still sending out their accounts which they expect to be paid! They state that existing customers will still enjoy their services as before, but in view of my experience of them, I am now cancelling my account as from today. (Another registered letter!) Anyone else any bad experience like myself!
  8. No bats in the belfry, but bats behind the fascia board above our front door.

In the past week we have heard much sqeaking and then mouse droppings on our front doorstep. Last night, in the twilight, I was surprised when I observed six tiny bats exit from a very small slit underneath the board.

Question: Other than the droppings, they don't seem to be any inconvenience, but here in France, are they a protected species? Most importantly, is there any humane way that we could persuade them to move there habitat?

I have had no previous expereince of bats, other than the table tennis or cricket varieties, so I would appreciate any advice from any knowledgeable batty person. Thank you!
  9. Thank you for the informative replies and my friend has asked me to point out his house is actually a bungalow, where of course all bedrooms are downstairs!

The lounge, I understand, is all of 4o foot long and might be improved by shortening to make a bedroom down one end.

Personally, we sought a 3 bedded house when looking at properties, but in the end, to our regret, we settled for only a two bedded. Mind you, it does give us a good excuse to turn down unwanted visitors with a load of children!

If there is any more opinions regarding the extra room which might make his house more saleable, we would be pleased to hear! Thank you!
  10. A friend of ours who has purchased a house near us in The Charente, wants to move a little nearer to the coast. To make his recent purchase more saleable, a builder has suggested converting part of his very long lounge into an extra en suite bedroom. He assures him that a three bedroom house with two toilets would have more sale appeal than a two bed with only one.
He says that the cost of the conversion would be relatively minimal compared to any value it would put on the house.
I would appreciate any comments from anyone who have been in a similar situation or have any valid comments!
  11. I have been using the services of the above-named companies for many months. I took it for granted that if I paid my 26euros monthly to Tiscali for unlimited use, that would be my only financial comitment.

With Telecom, I pay them monthly for all my telephone calls, which are advertised at a cut rate price and took it for granted that I only pay to France Telecom my line charges.

But now I am shocked to find that ever since inception some months ago, I have been paying both company accounts and also paying France Telecom for the same services. In fact I have been paying twice for all my calls and internet usage.!

I have been in correspondence for many weeks with all three of the companies, but can get no satisfaction whatsoever. (Beating my head against a brick wall comes to mind!). In deperation, I am now having to cancel my accounts with Tiscali and OneTel or coninue paying through my nose forever more!

Has any other poster had any similar experience?
  12. Has anyone had experience &/or knowledge of investing in the French equivalent of a UK Building Society? We have been quoted at Generale France Assurances an interest rate of 4.9% and assured that the money would always be safe and retrievable on demand.
Is there any snags or any downside to this sort of investment?
  13. The time limit for our two cats injections are just about to reach the end of their two year span. Can anyone inform me whether I would be allowed to take our cats in our caravan into Spain, for a short holiday, without a rabies certificate in force? Or would it be essential to get them have them have a booster?
  14. Hi Val,

Just check it out!. I think that if your husband should be taken before you, one half of his estate would pass to the three children. Although you may say that they would not take anything from you, it has been known to happen, which certainly would make life complicated. I understand this to be, but I might have got it wrong!
  15. I was surprised to read in Friday's Daily Mail that the prices in the DIY Stores in France are 20 to 30% cheaper than here in the UK. As one about to make a permanent move to France in the next few months, could any kind person inform me that this is in fact true, or is it media misinformation?
