  1. one of the closest resorts to Geneva is Le Grand Bornand, a smallish resort that we have visited a couple of times, staying at Chinaillon (just above Grand Bornand) means you are right on the slopes. The lift pass can allow you to ski La Clusaz too.

Also Flaine is very close to Geneva and being at the side of the motorway has a very quick 'transfer' time. Much more extensive slopes than Grand Bornand but not as pretty (unless you like concrete). If I remember rightly it has a 14Km run, in the right conditions of course.

Have skied at Chatel too, all in school holidays, lift queues have been similar at them all in our experience, probably Flaine getting the vote for the quickest uplift. (in our experience !)

I guess anywhere is great if the snow is good and the sun is shining.
  2. We are going to our house in Burgundy at the weekend and we have a tankful of red heating oil (diesel ?). Obviously I am not going to use it to ensure we get home.

    But could I ?

Is it standard diesel with a red dye ?

Hopefully the situation will ease over the next week and we won't need to consider becoming a criminal, but just in case .............
  3. MikeIoW, Got our 'doofer' through APRR.

Had to pay a one off €10. That charge and the trip charges all come out of my UK Nationwide account the month after the trip. All done on-line, no problems. Unless you consider the €10 is a problem of course.
  4. We have a 150 ltr and 200 ltr hot water tanks. Since 2003 we have never drained them after our final visit of the year at the end of October.

Grasping some wood, we have not had a problem with the tanks. We only get problems with pipework and that is after blowing compressed air through the hot & cold systems.

I guess residual water drains down to the lowest point and then freezes.

We also put some sticks and salt in the water of the loo pan as we did have a cracked toilet once on our return in the spring.

I understand that temperatures can get down to -12 to -15 in the winter. We went once in February - never again, bleedin freezin!!!

    Cheers

  5. Near Nolay, Saone et Loire, because it is about as far as I can comfortably drive South in a day from home in UK. The roads are quiet, just 1/2 an hour from the Autoroute.

It is also in the middle of Burgundy wine country. The food can be exceptional. The countryside pleasant and lots to do. The people are reasonably friendly.

I can be in Switz, Italy, Sth France, Spain in 2-3 hours (maybe a bit longer for Spain).

I won't be retiring there, we can't get to grips with the lingo.

In hindsight, we should have gone further south, probably below Lyon for the better weather. Its damn cold in the winter.

    In a nutshell, that's it.

    Cheers

    Nigel
  6. It came with the tap. As the tap wasn't expensive, then perhaps the 'cheap' tag is correct. Even so, there must be a way of getting the thing set up so that it doesn't drip.

I shall try the additional washer tip next time out.
  7. I am probably missing the obvious, installed a new basin complete with pop up waste.

Where the rod enters the waste I can't stop it dripping when water is released from the basin. I can make it worse but I can't get it to be completely drip free.

What am I not doing or doing wrong.

I have had the rod horizontal and at a slight angle so that water doesn't track down the rod. At a more acute angle, the waste can't be operated enough to allow the water to drain quickly.

    It ain't half frustrating.
  8. Mine came from APRR, a Liber-T Balade and is the size of a matchbox (thats a Bryant & May matchbox not a Swan Vestas).

Cost €10 initially and €1.50 per month when used. Applied for online and paid for from UK bank account. No messing about with printing and scanning (but then I am bone idle).

Are APRR the only one that allows online application and payment from UK ?
  9. We do the salt thing after having had a toilet crack. Not sure about the affect on the fosse, I probably won't bother sticking my head in it to see if the beasties are still eating the goo. How do you tell ?

Also blow compressed air down a tap while running around opening and closing other taps on the same 'circuit'. We'll find out at Easter how successful this has been. In the past we've usually had at least two waterfalls.

  10. Last year on another thread I asked if it was more expensive to come off the motorway mid trip and (say) fill up, then get back on.

Using this site, to go A26 Calais-Reims costs €19.60.

    To go A26 Calais-Bethune,€5.50, A26 Bethune-Reims,€13.30 total €18.80

So it is actually cheaper to break up a journey on the autoroute (in this instance maybe not in all !!!)

How much will it save if we come off every junction and get back on..................... no, I can't do it.

  11. Yep, you've got it.

You shouldn't need to turn the water off at the stopcock, as Northender says there should be a tap on the cold feed into the CE. can't see it on your pic, assume it is behind the CE. If memory serves it is a quarter turn with a blue lever. So you should have water to your other facilities for the morning, just no hot water.

  12. The drain outlet is the 'white plastic cover' and it is out of this that some splashing can occur. We started to drain it off at about 8pm and it didn't finish till about 6am. As it (the Chauffe Eau, CE) is in our en suite it kept us awake with its gurgling and bubbling. We did have a hot tap turned on too. A Dutch chap in the village has designed a special pipe to connect up the GdS, I couldn't use it as our CE  is on a tripod stand and there wasn't enough clearance. Not sure how it worked but I'll find out and post here in due course.

The compressed air joblet took minutes in the morning, one person holding the compressor gun into a shower pipe, the other running around turning taps on and off. Kept a bucket of water by the loo for the ladies to do their final tiddle before the drive home. We also remove the shower heads and leave to drain as we have bought a few due to leaking after a freezing winter.

    Have fun.

  13. We also blew compressed air through the hot and cold system opening a different tap in turn. Just to help get rid of any water in low points.

Previously we have left the water in the chauffe eau and not had a problem, I 'bottled' it this year and emptied it, took all night and kept us awake.

Last year we had a broken WC pan on our return in the spring, gone the salt route this winter as well as our usual 2 sticks.

Hopefully next spring we will not have any Niagra falls issues when we turn the water on !

  14. So, for those of us that do travel for many miles on the peage Autoroutes, is it more economical to fill up using the higher priced Autoroute filling stations or to come off the Autoroute, pay the toll, fill up a mile or two away, return to the Autoroute and the journey?

Is the Autoroute priced per km, or does the more km you drive in one journey get a cheaper rate?
