  1. Hi Muppet

Shutters are made of pine (sapin) or hardwood (bois exotique). I found that Lapeyre have a good selection ad can even make exact replacements for your existing shutters.

Try www.lapeyre.fr and then click on "e-catalogue" in the top right corner. Select "l'exterieur" and then select page no 120 which is where the shutters section starts. I've just ordered some 'renovation' ones in pine and they'll be ready in about 10 days.

I'm on Wanadoo ADSL 2mb and using a Netgear DG834 wireless ADSL router. It works fine and the range is good, up to about 40 metres into the garden.

I started with a Livebox but I didn't like the setup, including the USB 'dongle' wireless aerial (my laptop has its own wireless network card anyway). The Wnadoo software is rather invasive too, hiding all the connection details from you.

I already had the Netgear router and I simply disconnected the Livebox and uninstalled the Wanadoo software, then connected he Netgear router and it all worked immediately.

    Success for me too!

Since Wanandoo don't wanadoo anything to help us, the solution is SMTP relaying as previously suggested by Di/John.

I had problems getting my credit card details accepted on a couple of the sites I tried, I think it's because I have a UK card but French address, but I'm not sure. In the end I've opened a PayPal account with my French debit card and signed up with www.authsmtp.com

They offer a service starting at £14 (21€). There are message number limits/total size limits per month but they send you warnings at 80% and 90% and you can upgrade to the next level, paying only on a pro-rata basis.

I've tested it out and successfully sent and received form one of my previously uncontactable friends on NTL.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions, that's me sorted!

  4. Thanks for the advice an deleting my accidental multiple posts.

John, on entering my credit card details I started with a blank address and added fields when it rejected something. Usually on credit card transactions only a couple of fields are mandatory but this insisted on a full address, with a street, city, state zip and country. I did try my departement in the state, unsuccessfully. I also emailed SMTP.COM with my problem and they suggested using 'france' in the state. It rejects my 'street' and 'zip'. It's surprised me too!

I'm awaiting a response to another email to SMTP. If I get a successful response I'll post the solution on this thread.

  5. Erm... no, a monopoly means that there's only one, and it's operated by the ISP arm of France Telecom, namely Wanadoo.

I have no complaints about the reliability or speed of the internet access, I'm on a 2mb broadband service, but this ianbility to send emails to our friends in UK is a big minus.

I was previously on dail-up with Tiscali andwas eagerly anticipating getting back to the sort of service I had in UK.

To answer your question fully, I have signed up for 12 months, this was a requirement in order to get 6 months at a reduced rate.

So, it's fast internet access and limited email with Wanadoo, or dial-up speeds plus email with Tiscali.

Other ISPs will be along soon I'm sure.

Yes, I was on a call with the 'support' people for 50 minutes trying to resolve this problem, in the end they only proved that I could send emails to myself!!! The cost of the call was astronomical. I'll change ISPs as soon as there's another one available here. It's a monopoly at the moment.

I can assure you that it IS the IP address (not ISP address) that NTL use to decide whether to accept or reject emails. I thought I was getting away from all this stuff after 35 years in IT.

You can read about it here http://www.nl.sorbs.net/ and then try your IP address here http://www.nl.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml but you'll need an account to do it. I have an account and I've checked it today (again) and my address is currently blocked. The records show that a whole series of addresses, any of which can be dynamically allocated to you when you connect to the internet, are blocked.

NTL refer to this list and strictly speaking should not do. Most other ISPs do not use this method of verifying the source of the email.

The action required is for Wanadoo to get themselves de-listed, but that won't happen until 1) they get themselves sorted out (they have an appalling record for sorting out spam and abuse problems) and 2) actually make an effort to request a de-listing.

The situation is likely to stay unresolved until sufficient pressure is brought to bear. A few individual users like us will have no effect whatsover.

Di's solution, using SMTP.COM seems to me to be the easiest way round it if there is no other ISP in your particular area.

  7. I have the same problem too! It's very frustrating. It takes about a week for the error message to be returned (error 452).

My understanding is that NTL hold Wanadoo responsible for loads of spam messages and now refuse to accept any Wanadoo traffic.

I've also found that using a hotmail account isn't a guaranteed way of getting messages through. Your IP address is part of the message and of course that IP address is allocated by Wanadoo on your broadband connection.

I don't know hwat to do. There is no alternative ISP for broadband where we live but we'rereally annoyed about not being able to chat to friends back in UK.

I've tried contacting Wanadoo support but got absolutely nowhere.

  8. Thanks Nick

I was coming to the same conclusion (drill first). There's not much room to fix a facia board as the tile overhang is not great; by the time I've fitted a board the water will run off between the board and the gutter! I don't want to get into a long job which involves stripping back and relaying the tiles, so drilling it is.

  9. I wish to attach some pvc guttering to a small pigsty that I'm converting into storage sheds. I've bought the guttering, pvc '25' half-round (25-what, I've no idea! It's not cms!) and conventional brackets which in UK I'd use to fasten it to a facia board. However, there is no facia, just the normal 'pierre' wall. The brico sold me some zinc-plated supports which have a long pin (about 22cms long) and which are meant to be fastend into the stonework and then the plastic brackets bolt onto these. There's a slot to allow vertical adjustment to achieve the required fall.

After all that, my question is - do I just drive the pin into a joint in the wall, or do I drill a pilot hole first? As it's going to be near the top of the wall, is there a danger that I'll loosen the stonework if I hammer it home?

  10. I've registered my 1998 Honda VFR800 this year. I found the process tiresome and expensive but relatively straightforward... in the end.

My bike, bought new in UK, did not come with a c of c, so that was the first problem. I wrote to Honda in Paris telling them that I wanted to register the bike, could they supply a c of c. They sent some information and an application form. It depends on what type approval marks you have on the various components of the bike, tyres, mirrors, lamps, silencer etc. If you can show that it complies with EU requirements Honda can provide a certificate which you can take directly to the prefecture. Otherwise you're going to get a partial conformity document and the bike will have to pass a test.

I had replaced the speedometer on my bike with one which reads in KPH only. I did this because I found the dual calibrations on the UK one too difficult to read accurately (by which I mean the kph readings!). I also had the odometer converted to kms at the same time. The form also states that headlights may need to be changed so that they dip to the right. You have to note all the 'E' number markings for all of the requested components.

The duly completed form was returned to Honda together with a cheque for 100€ and a copy of the V5C.

The c of c arrived about 6 weeks later and I was able to go to the prefecture and obtain my carte grise and then find a dealer to make my new plate.

Thanks. The welcome letter arrived and I connected the DG834 as instructed. It seems happy, with all green LEDs but I can't get onto the web. I assume I need a connection setting up on the pc? Currently I have a Tiscali unlimited connection which dials via my internal modem. Don't I need to set up a 'wanadoo' connection but with 'never dial'?? Why can't they just publish the parameter settings instead of giving us all this software? I know some people prefer an automatic solution but I don't want Wanadoo software on my pc.

    Regards

  12. Hi Cakipak

I too have Netgear dg834 and would like to configure my connection manually rather then have all the Wanadoo software cluttering up the place. You mentioned that you entered your username and p/w (I've not received mine yet, I expect it in the next day or two) but don't you also have to tell your connection where to 'dial'? I sthis information available anywhere on the web? I've searched the francetelecom site in vain. I want to be ready to go as soon as my confirmation arrives! Is this information in the 'welcome' letter?

  13. Our kitchen has been dry-lined with plasterboard with skimmed joints and then emulsioned. Fairly standard I guess. By using a detector it sounds to me as though the supports for these boards is some sort of metal batten framework. We now wish to add some kitchen units as there are no wall-mounted ones.

My question is: are these plasterboards capable of supporting wall cabinets attached by using cavity fixings? Or have I to somehow either attach through to the original stone wall or to the supporting brackets?

  14. Thanks guys. I'm beginning to understand, although I've never seen anything like this on our UK systems. Is the condensation risk higher because the boiler is in a colder utility room outside the main house? How do you know what the mixer setting should be? Ours is graduated 1-10 and is currently set at 7. Is it necessary to adjust it from day to day depending on what heating demands there are?

We have a separate hot water tank, a tall white cylindrical thing, so it's not incorporated in the boiler.

I've tried searching the internet but I can't find any operating instructions for these valves. I can see that they can be operated by servo-motors though, in which case where do the sensors go?

  15. Vanne melangeuse (4 voie) Can anyone explain why it's necessary to have one of these valves in the central heating pipework, in our case, just behind the boiler. We have a fioul system and I can't understand why it all looks so complicated. Back in UK we'd have hot water by gravity circulation and heating by a pump switched by thermostat. All of my system here is manually switched and looks like the engine room of QE2, with valves to switch circuits on and off and the pump is just on a standard socket !! Ideally I'd like to use a UK-type programmer to control the heating and hot water.

  16. John, I should have thought of 'controle technique'. As my car is new I don't need one so I haven't done any research on this. Do you have to buy a vignette each year even though the test is every two years? Would this explain the  notice I saw do you think?

Can you reassure me that there's nothing else I need to display in my windscreen apart from the green insurance sticker?

    Regards

    Nev

  17. The notice definitely said "voiture". I think I'll have to go back and go in the shop and ask! I wonder if it's for 'not new' cars? I bought a new car, registered in July, and I'm sure I would have been told if there was something else I needed.
  18. I've just seen a reminder notice in a shop window in Chef-Boutonne (dept 79) which appears to say that the last date for sale of vignettes for cars is 3rd December 2004, and a fee is payable to the departement. I have no idea what these are, can anyone help? I now notice that many cars have another sticker besides the insurance sticker, and these have CF or CT on them (sorry, I'm not sure which!), and a hole punched for the month and year. What's this all about then? I know that the road tax thingy has been abolished.
