1.
But Mark, I have always been told that global warming will mean that we could be in for very very cold weather. Either I haven't understood, or you haven't.
TU, I'm sure I haven't understood, and maybe you haven't understood, and the people who always told you probably haven't understood, or they at least directly contradict some other experts who don't understand, and no-one seems to have ever fully understood that you can't second guess nature.  It could be anything.  I personally don't think there'll be a huge amount of generations of us left though, before something far less dopey takes over.  I mean, capitalism, really, it wasn't going to ever compete with geology in the long-term stakes was it?  Arrogant idea on our part.  Shame for China, India et al though, just as they're getting the hang of it.  That's if the Industrial Revolution sparked this all off of course, which it probably didn't.  Or did.

an amusing thread to read at one go for the first time[8-)]

from woman with swollen face ... to ... mothers ... to ... Boudica in 12 posts,

with the following subthemes: BBC and work experience (should be inverted), doctors and HenryVIII, codpieces and breastplates, wheelchairs and chariots, lippy and bodyform, multi-tasking and child feeding
12 posts is relatively meandery given some of the participants.  Will you let me have 'meandery' Dick?  I rather like it.

  3. As instructed, I shall be going via URSSAF to set up a new business.  I've also read that, as a self-employed person, URSSAF take the place entirely of CPAM.  Does this mean I go to URSSAF with my carte vitale request, or is that still CPAM?  Or UNCLE or NATO or someone else entirely?

    Thanks.[:)]

  4.

Oddly most of the people renting my friends place are French ...perhaps they have a different perspective ?
Or it could be the fact it is located in a seaside town - coastal locations are so popular that perhps people are more willing to compromise on the outside space in order to be near to the sea.
Or maybe compromise on the outside space in order to be near the high mountains?  We're looking at the winter market as much as the summer one where we are, and if you're renting in February, a garden after 6pm is more or less redundant, after all, unless you're a bit weird.  And ok, global warming may be killing the downhill skiing, but there's loads of alternative winter touristy options.

  5. I think the general consensus backs up what we thought, but the village/town in question is lovely, and the house does have a smashing view of Mont Valier, and maybe we could get approval to add a balcony to the first floor.  Don't know.  I stayed in several gites as a little nipper which had no outside space at all and remember them fondly, but I guess punters are considerably more demanding these days.

How much would it cost to put a pool on the roof?

  6. Will do.  S's new Canon won't work with her old non-Canon lenses.  This is presumably to encourage one to buy Canon lenses - shouldn't that sort of thing be illegal?  What's that phrase for it - restrictive trading or something..?  Anyway, we'll put some St J's Day snaps on the photos bit of the forum regardless of whether they feature Janneau or not, since the house is nearing completion (or rather we're nearing exhaustion and it'll do...), and we're also trying to woo Meg, Mog and Dog as our first guests (agent's fee in the post by the way Mr G), so a few new images wouldn't hurt [:)]
  7. Folks,

Poele shopping.  Does the following spec sound suitable for heating a house of c120m2?

     Puissance : De 0 a 1400 w
     Volume corrige chauffé : Jusqu a 600 m3
      Info :peint.13kw.200 a 500 m3.buches jusqu a 55 cm.foyer fonte.corps acier.

Also, does the insert go right to the top of the chimney?

    Anything else to consider?

    Thanks. [:)]

Ah, Janneau was the same next door, strutting round my ladder like a cockerel pre-match.  [;-)]
Are you sure Janneau isn't a cockerel?[:)]
No.  If cockerels wear 'USA' slippers, then I wouldn't necessarily bet against him being one.  How many cockerel years make up 75 human ones?  Must be tons.

  9.
Well, what a wonderful couple of hours!  Oh David Skrela, Talent d'Or indeed!  Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

    Sorry, I'm overjoyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm confused.  This is presumably something to do with egg-chasing.  Erm, I like Debbie Harry.

oh, and sorry, Llwyncelyn, i was just being silly re Eric Clapton.  My feelings towards him are largely ambivalent, although I was just listening to him on blistering form on a John Mayall's Blues Band CD (think that was when he briefly could be arsed, Dick, before swanning off to be a lazy frontman.  Oops, the ambivalence is slipping....).

Around 6% is enough to get people rattled, apparently.
Just read this from Tresco as "Around 6% is enough to get people ratted", which I suppose is true if one drinks immoderately.  Freudian misread OR WHAT??  Must check into a 0% clinic.

Back on topic, I live on a mountaintop and there's a flipping English family here AS WELL!  It's like Sarlat on market day, I tell you.  Tsk.

  11. Our house has three floors, and a chimney.  So far, so good.  However, on the first and top floors, this chimney is 'breasted', if that's the correct term (ie brickwork protrudes into the rooms to form fireplaces), but when it reaches the ground floor it is just a gaping hole in the ceiling, so that we can look up through it to the sky from our living room, with nothing to support it.

Should I build a faux fireplace from the living room floor up to the gaping hole, or is it fine as it is?  I suspect it has been in it's current state for probably...ever, but not sure.

    Hope this makes sense...

    Thanks.

  12. We are going on a fact finding mission ([;-)]) to Morocco soon, and in trying to book a hotel/B&B, received the following email, making reference to a 'mandat postal':

    Bonjour,

Is this common practice, and if so does anyone know how to go about sending a 'mandat postal'?  The place in question looks to be entirely legit (web presence, Rough Guide mention etc), so I'm sure it's fine, but how do we go about sending the deposit in this format?

    Thanks [:D]

Um, I can't just put a plug on it and plug it in can I?  I'll have to do something dangerous and complicated first I expect?

    Help! [:(]
Depends on the cooker, but if it is capable of running off a 16A plug, then it must be pre-fitted with one. Normally, cookers have 16A plugs, 32A plugs, or (often) are hard-wired to a junction box.

Whatever, the regs allow you to do it yourself. It isn't gas, is it?
Haha Nick!  No, it' not gas.  Well, I don't think so.  Does 'Ariston' mean 'Gas' in this nonsensical language that's been thrust upon me by my moving here?  It came with leads jutting straight out of the main cable thing, thus no plug, which I suppose means i need to look into one of these junction box things does it?

  14.
You can of course order them here: www.1000traverses.com/produits.htm
As a railwayman I am aware that many sleepers are also impregnated with other products.
Really Brian?  I always thought the 'other products' were recycled into the Strongbow cans chilling in the buffet car?
