  1. We agree Sid, and said much the same thing earlier in this thread.  Be interesting to see what actually happens.  We liked our French cards as they are apparently accepted in Quebec where our son lives! Never had to try it out though.

Edit.  Ignore bit about Quebec - it is the ordinary Carte Vitale that is (apparently) useful in Quebec - not, of course the European card,

  2. I get a renewable prescription for six months for allergy tablets and eye drops.  I have never found a pharmacy in France who will give me more than one month's supply at one visit. I just go once a month and get them.  I understood that this is because if the prescription is changed for any reason there is less waste than if you are holding several month's supply.

I don't find this a problem: if I will be away they will let me have my supplies early.

  3. Hi Iceni  Yes I realsie that the new arrangements start in April 2010 but the French EHIC card we have goes on until October 2010. One would have expected the card to show an earlier expiry date?

    Mrs H

  4. Benjamin:  We saw that thread too (re EHIC cards from UK).  But: Mr H's French EHIC card ran out at the end of October and he has been issued with another French one with an expiry date October 2010.  He is the holder of an E121.

We find it bizarre that the UK pay France for our health care but then will pay again if we are taken ill in say Germany - where our daughter lives - and in any case what happens in the UK itself if we are ill when visiting Granny? We would not expect to get treatment free as we do not live in the UK but are the hospitals going to understand a UK EHIC card being used???? Very odd.  Sorry to go rather off thread.

  5. We have been adopted by a kitten. As our house is very isolated we are pretty sure she (I'll call it she) has been deliberately abandoned.  We guess she is about 12 weeks.

W are feeding her but cannot keep her - I have multiple allergies and cats are number one! We are giving her food and water outside. There are plenty of warm places around for her to sleep.

My question is:  how do we go about getting her rehomed?  I cannot work out what to look up in yellow pages for a Rescue centre.  We are in Lower Normandy, Avranches/St Hilaire area.

    Thanks for any suggestions

  6. As no-one with actual experience has replied I can perhaps say that we have a friend here with Parkinsons and she is very happy with her care.  She sees a specialist regularly, never heard of Parkinson nurses though, nurses here are independent and do not work through doctors practices.

  7. Thanks for the reply Clair. The seat my daughter uses for the smaller child is specially manufactured for Vespas (possibly motor bikes too) Only one company makes them but I don't have the name.\.  It has sides and the child is sort of jammed between the adult in from and the back of the seat.  It does not have restraints - assuming you/the law mean straps.  If there is an accident the child is thrown off, as is the adult, so does not get trapped.  The children wear full padded clothing.

I have suggested my daughter registers and joins in this thread.

    Thanks again.

  8. Not sure if this query should be here or on "driving" but here goes:

My daughter and son-in-law are keen Vespa riders.  In Germany, where they live, their two children are allowed on the back in proper child seats.  They understand that in Austria it is illegal to have a young child on the back but does anyone know about the law in France please?

They have proper child seats (the children are 4 and 8), helmets, padded clothing and gloves.

They would like to bring the Vespas in a trailer next summer and then go on trips from our house, including a day trip to Jersey (any thoughts on law in Jersey).

    Many thanks

    Mrs H

  9. On the slip to send in to Ursaff to show what has been paid the the employee it says put address and date of birth if social security number not known. Same thing if you use the online service.  We assume a social security number is then issued.

If you were in France with an E form then you do have a number surely??

    H.

  10. Assuming that the work you are to do can be covered by one of the schemes you probably don't need to do anything.  You give your social security number, name address etc to the employer and that is it.  Later you will get info on what has been paid for you and a sheet telling you what to put on your tax form.

We pay our gardener this way (big tax advantage for us).
