"We have a changeover... valve?... widgit?!.. which connects two bottles and when one is empty the widgit automatically flips over to the full bottle so there's no break in supply. There is a red line in the indicator of the widgit which shows when this has happened so the empty one can be changed."

    Hello Carole

Problem is that the gas bottle is in the stove. It is a Rosieres with an integral cupboard for a gas bottle but no room for two. As our stove is in a chimney alcove we can't have one near it and the wall it is on is the boundary to next door!  Years ago in Herefordshire a relative had a changeover valve on two bottles that were both outside. Worked very well, but she had to switch it manually.

We always have a spare full bottle and keep a diary so that we know how long it has been going. Lasts between 36 and 56 days, depends on how much cooking I have done.

  2. We bought a French gas cooker and Yes the burner is at the bottom and the food does burn!  This is the first time we had ever used a gas oven (only had a gas hob before) so we no nothing about UK cookers.  It may well be that not all French cookers are like this!

We are fed up with gas bottles - they always run out at a critical time so will change to fully electric in the not too distant future.#

  3. Like you (we suspect) we got an email from Speedferries this morning about this offer.

We are thrilled and will book two crossings France to UK before the end of this coming week - final date for making provisional bookings.

We are sure to change the dates but at £60 a crossing this is still an unbeatable deal.

We are in Normandy but just stay overnight in Boulogne and catch an early ferry which gives us all day to get to wherever we are going (not always the same place).

So many offers seem to cover only those who start in the UK - wonderful to find one that treats us all the same. At least we hope so when we try to book. Will come back on this forum if not correct.

  4. We can't help over most of your queries though we can agree that lots of odd charges do seem to crop up

What we do know is that the Maire has no real say in planning matters any more.  We were keen to buy a piece of land to build where the Maire and village council had said Yes they were happy to give planning consent. We made sure of a Clause suspensive and we were able to back out when planners said "no". Maire very upset!

We found another piece of land nearby so all was well in the end, tho it caused delay.

    Good luck anyway

  5. We are near Mortain.  Our local paper recently had a notice that the Pompiers have stopped coming out. They gave three numbers of contractors who will cover all of Manche. Fixed cost of 80 euros.

    La Societe Perrine  0231 52 94 73

    La Societe Dol Prevention  0299 80 94 24 *

(* a neighbour had these out and they were most efficient, clearing a wasps nest as well as the frelons they were called out for)

    Logissain Service  0233 55 20 14

We actually got the Dol people via a different number given by the local Pompiers; 0233 49 50 75

A girl answered who did not speak English, but the operator who came was fairly fluent.

Do you really mean that your Mutelle refunds "all charges" regardless of the percentage over convention you are charged?  If so can we all have the name of the company please!

  7. Blood test:  You go straight to the lab (usually looks like a shop - your Doc will tell you where the nearest one is.)

Eye tests:  We did find one optician who had a resident "tester", you have to ask in the shop.

  8. Hello

I see from the "Gazette" this week that there is a Patchwork (and other needlework) club in Avranches. Report on page 18.

Is anyone out there a member, or would like to be?  I would prefer to go as a new girl with someone (English or English speaking), not alone.  I have not contacted them yet. I realise this sounds wimpish but I would be much the same even in the UK.

    Thanks

  9. Hello

Sorry can't help on other banks but our CA doesn't charge for online viewing or transfers to/from our savings account. Perhaps you have the business version (we cannot pay anyone online only do transfers, set up virements etc)?  Our CA told us that no-one except very big businesses would understand if we did online payments as we were used to doing in the UK !!  We are with CA Normand.

We certainly find it annoying that we cannot just pay bills online but, as I say, we were told that this is just not done in France.

Will watch this topic with interest.

  10. In our area (50) the Pompiers will not come any more but they have a list of contractors. Standard charge 80 euros.

Frelons are very dangerous if you are stung. get rid of the nest - it is not fair on yourselves or visitors to just leave it.

  11. Speak to the ex-pats tax office in the UK.  You may find that if you are absent from the UK for a complete tax yar then there will be no UK cgt anyway.

Don't know about the French attitude though. Are you currently in the French tax system?

Probably the best advice is to talk to one of the tax specialists who advertise in LF magazine.

  12. Tontine clause works in the sense that surviving partner gets the property BUT - inheritance tax is payable on almost the whole value of the half when inherited. This may be OK if you have savings but can be a problem otherwise.  Even for married couples tontine is not perfect as inheritance tax payable over a certain threshold (much higher than un-marrieds).

This forum has lots of links/questions re this. The best way to go if married is a French marriage contract changing your "regime" to communalitie (spelling?!) which means that when first spouse dies it is if he/she never existed.  With a second marriage however (as in the case of original question) this means one set of cildren get disinherited and we understand that some Notaires get stressed about this. As possibly do the children. Same applies to tontine though.  Inheritance laws in France are a minefield for anyone with children of an earlier marriage - get advice!!

PS Just seen that there is a very good thread re this on the "Legal" Forum.

  13. We gave up using the long Caen/Cherourg/Le Havre crossings a long time ago. Although our (then) holiday home is near Avranches we used the tunnel, with property owners big discounts.

Now we live in France permanently and do not qualify for property owners club we have switched to Speedferries. Even with a night in Boulogne before the crossing we find it cheaper! Also we have a leisurely day driving up to Boulogne - ignoring motorways.

  14. Directions for fabric shop outside Avranches:

If you are coming from Avranches take road towards Granville:

Take main road thru Marcey les Greves (just outside Avranches). The shop "La Foire aux Tissus" is on the right just as the village ends, Car park in front or round the side. Just after the shop is a huge ad for Pavillons Montois!

From the Granville direction as you approach Marcey les Greves (last village before Avranches) it will be on your left just as village begins.

From memory it is shut on Monday morning. The shop looks very scruffy from outside - don't be put off! They buy ends of lines, but have lots of furnishing fabric on rolls too. Just ask a member of staff to cut rolls for you, or ribbon, tape etc. They have wonderful collection of zips, ribbon etc and every fabric from floaty to heavy. I have to be dragged out on each visit.

  15. In spring my moles all emerged and dug their galleries all over the orchard leaving huge mounds.  I am now getting the same varicose veins as you and I think that this is just routine maintenance; hills if any are very small.

Incidentally three years ago I bought a solar powered mole scarer for the lawn which seemed to work well but this year the lawn is completely undermined and it seems that condensation has got in and it no longer works.

Has anyone else had experience with these?

  16. Hello everyone

Can someone tell me how to put the posting in bigger print ? I notice that some posts are in a much bigger print!  It would be even better if all posts were in big print - some of us are shortsigted and find the standard size a bit small.

    Thanks

PS Now I am posting this I can see that you can change the size of font at the top of the window! Sorry, though I don't seem to have managed it.  Even so can everyone do it please?
