  1. Dear Ron

Many thanks for advice. I agree about the interest rate point but "they" say towards the end of the year the pound will increase in value.

Do these tax-free accounts apply to English tax payers and people who pay above the minimum tax rates in France?

  2. Dear All

Am thinking about opening a deposit account with Credit Agricole. We already have a current account with them and e-banking.

Could somebody advise as to the procedure with paying tax or not on the interest (I am resident in the UK and pay UK income tax)

Does anybody know the best sort of account to open?

    Many thanks

  3. Having just bought an BMW X3 with xenon lights, contrary to what I was told, I find it nearly impossible to adjust the beam on the drivers side for driving in France. The other side is difficult but possible. Apparently it is not possible to use sticky bits on the headlight lenses with xenon lights.

My question is would it be alright to divert only the dipped beam on passenger side as this is the one that would dazzle a driver driving on the right in France. The drivers side light unadapted would presumably just be pointing straight ahead of the car or towards the passengers side but not over the other side of the road to dazzle oncoming cars

    Many thanks for replies

  4. Could anyone tell me if what the local BMW dealer told me is true. He says dipped xenon headlights shine forwards and therefore do not need adjustment on the continent. I can only assume it is true since the lights apparently become so hot you cannot stick things on the front anyway.

My other question is do you think the French police know about this or will they stop and fine me anyway

    Many thanks

  5. I have recently got one of the brilliant telepeage devices for my car. It is especially useful when travelling alone in a right hand drive car.

One worry though. Does anybody know how long the batteries last in these devices and whether there is any way to test if the battery is getting low.

    Many thanks

  6. I have an french orange sim card in my british nokia phone which works well.

The problem with this and all french pay-as-you-go cards is that the credit runs out very quickly (within 14 days for a 10 euro mobicarte). If you do not top it up in a certain period your phone number is stopped and your sim card is useless.

As far as I know you can only buy the top-ups in France and you can only activate them when visiting France.

I have just bought a new sim card from the united mobile phone shop online which seems to be a better bet (I hope!) The credit lasts 9 months and you can buy top ups online and activate them anywhere. The calls are a bit more expensive than the french orange in France or the t-mobile in England, but are much cheaper than the french orange in England or t-mobile card in France. It also costs nothing to receive calls with this card.

  7. Dear All

We have a house in Sarlat in the Dordogne. We have a digital satellite dish that we bought in the UK which I think is too small for this far south since we lose reception whenever it rains.

I assume we need a larger dish. I have seen cheap large digital dishes for sale at our local bricolage. Would these work with a british SKY receiver or is the french digital system different s from ours, as is their normal TV. If they would be ok, how large a dish would we need. If not ok where can we get a larger dish in this country.

    Many thanks

  8. I have the Collin french dictionary on my pocket pc (an IPAQ 2210). When reading or listening to the radio and coming across unknown words you can tag them in the dictionary. The program then allows you to look at the tagged words only. The problem is I now have so many tagged words that it is like a dictionary within a dictionary. I do find it helpful to test myself on the list, since a few more words sink in each time.

Like one of the other contributers I think the Simenon/Maigret books are excellent for learning and also could I suggest the Poirot or Miss Marple books in French which have limited vocabulary and page turning stories.

  9. I would like to listen to spoken french via the internet, since our radio reception of french radio is terrible.

As yet I have had little success on the Radio France site. I cannot seem to get the live or recorded programmes to play.

Can anybody help with other sites or suggest what I am doing wrong.

    Many thanks

  10. We are in the process of setting up a group of people in the Suffolk/North Essex/South Cambridgeshire area who own or are looking to own property in France.

We would envisage meetings about once every couple of months. These informal meetings would be to exchange ideas and information on all aspect of living in France and owning French property.

Other ideas we had were to get speakers in about subjects of interest eg conveying french property, french laws on letting property, french food and wines, aspects of building and renovations in France etc.

Another idea was the possibility of house swaps, in order to see other parts of France.

We are open to any other ideas that people may have.

If you are interested then please e-mail:

The first meeting will be on Monday 24th May 2004
probably in the Keddington area near Haverhill in Suffolk.

  11. Having just bought a house in Sarlat in the Dordogne we are keen to sample some genuine French cuisine. Unfortunately most of the restaurants we have found cater mainly for tourists.

Can anybody recommend some decent restaurants in Sarlat or within a 20 mile radius of Sarlat.

    Many thanks
