  1. Hi Diana

We recently imported a 13 year old Hymer camper from Germany and after a few hiccups have it registered in France. As your camper is so new you may not have any problems obtaining the certificate of conformity required by the French authorities. If you want any further info please PM us.

  2. AFAIK there is no obligatory registration for gites. You complete a tax return for revenue fonciere, i.e. income from property and pay your taxes, the authorities then work out your contribution to healthcare on your income. If you earn below the allowance for your circumstances you will have nothing to pay and also may get a reduction on your taxe d'habitation/fonciere.

It is well worth registering with your local tourist office, as they will then provide you with free local guides/maps etc. in quantity. There are two levels of registration, the first costs about 13 euros p.a. and is just putting you on their accommodation list, the second costs more, and they will come and inspect your accommodation and award epis as appropriate. In either case they like to know about locally available accommodation and may well send enquiries your way.

  3. It is very simple, really, a sign stating 'Please do not put anything other than toilet paper in the toilet', reinforced by a polite mention on the day that they arrive and a suitable waste bin with liner in the bathroom. I think most people understand this. When we holidayed in Greece we were not allowed to put even the loo roll in the pan!!!!
  4. Don't get too keyed up about it, and don't expect any champagne cork popping in the Notaire's office - they are busy people and will be shooing you out the door for the next signing to take place.

The celebrations can be very varied, depending on the circumstances. When we purchased our fermette we decamped to the local bar with the vendors (4 siblings) and then they treated us to a meal, with their partners and children present, plus the estate agent, in total 15 of us! It was a fantastic evening, but all we wanted to do was take possession of our new home.

Good luck, I hope all goes to plan.

  5. Re the mozzies in the Venice Vert - they say (the French, that is) that there are so many dragonflies there that they keep the mozzies under control. (That's mozzies not Ozzies, Hendo!!) It is a very beautiful part of this very large Dept., it just goes to show the diversity in this area, from the rolling vineyards of the Cognac area, along the banks of the Gironde estuary, the ritzy sea-front at Royan, the stunning architecture of La Rochelle, the miles of beautiful beaches, acres of sunflowers, and the Venice Vert. [oops! Hope I haven't given too much away, don't want everybody moving here].

    Season's greetings to all!

  6. Hi Ron

We imported a HYMER/Citroen camper this year from Germany to France. It took us about 6 weeks and a few hundred euros to get it registered, but it was well worth it, given the difference in prices between France and Germany. We had to get a manufacturer's certificate of conformity from Hymer France and Citroen France (for the body and the vehicle). We then had to have it inspected by the Bureau de Veritas, and with very little in the way of changes it was passed. If you are having problems with your local DRIRE it may well be worth approaching your local Bureau veritas, as they seem to have the final word.

If you are still struggling PM us and we'll see if we can help.

  7. We sold our maison secondaire privately this year. We advertised it on the French Property News website and had loads of enquiries. We found the process very straightforward, and even translated for our (English) buyers. It saves on agency fees, so everybody benefits (except the agencies).

I guess it depends on where your property is, as to how propular the area is, how accessible if you are planning on selling to the UK market.

You can also advertise in the local paper's petites annonces which only costs a few euros.

  8. Peterw, sorry to confuse you, my reply meant to explain that you declare income from letting as revenue fonciere, this is different from your tax fonciere, which is like council tax. When you fill out your annual French tax return there is a separate form for income from letting. Tax Professionel is actually what you pay on your income as a professional worker in France, and I don't think this would apply to letting income, unless you were registered as a landlord and making your main income from rentals.

As always, consulting a tax professional is a good idea!!

  9. Hi Tresco

Where are you in 17 and are you ex-Scillies, or just fancied the username? I was wondering if we could start an ex-Cornish/17 group????

We have just planted 7 trees and 50 hedging shrubs, and I ache all over!!

Mick, it rained most of yesterday so your trees should be fine.

  10. You declare revenue from letting property as Taxe Fonciere. The government allows you to keep a certain proportion of your income to offset against expenses and tax is only payable on about 35% (if my memory serves me well). As you are not tax resident in France I assume you won't have to pay contributions towards health and social care, otherwise this is 8% of your profit.

But you might find yourself liable for some tax depending on your UK tax situation - you need to read up about the double tax treaty.

  11. You sometimes see them at Rouillac market which is held on 27th of the month. Don't know how far that is from you? Otherwise ask your local farmers, or at Gamm Vert type stores, they often know who breeds what locally.

My Pygmy goats are expected in january, but I only think she'll produce enough for me!

  12. Hi all, Yes I am very happy with my new specs, service and delivery amazing! My prescription was outside the normal range on the internet order form, but a quick phone call, when I spoke to their opthalmologist and he was able to reassure me that they could meet my requirements.

  13. Dear Teamedup (and anyone else needing new specs)

I have just ordered a pair of specs from

    www.spex4less.com

    for £45

I am very short-sighted with an astigmatism and would pay a lot more for specs in France. As long as you have a prescription less than 2 years old, you can order online or if your prescription falls outside their normal range you can telephone it through (0800 169 1734) and speak to their very helpful staff and order them to be delivered to your door within a week.

    Fantastic value for money.

  14. You should be aware that in some communes the style and colour of shutters are dictated by the Mairie! In our commune we can only have 4 colours (blue, brown, green, white) and no picking out the metalwork in black. (The adjoint has yellow shutters with black bars!!!)

Lapeyre do ready made volets of all styles or you can have them made to measure locally. (Drop me an email if you want more info.)
