  1. +1 for no prob having UK address; I have done so for decades.

Patf, that is strange that your bank advised you not to transfer the money out right away. Though you should leave a bit in there for 6 months or so, in case there are any mistaken payments going out from organisations that have not noticed you have cancelled them, or in case of any adjusting payments INwards, for utilities accounts etc you have terminated. ( I have had quite a few of the latter come in since selling my house in November.)

As I still go to France fairly often, I thought I would keep my account open anyway, and transfer a bit over to it every now and then to use for cash, shopping and expenses when there. I reckon that would be cheaper that using a UK bank card each time.

  2. I am not a Catholic, but 20 years ago I used to accompany my non-French-speaking Catholic stepmother to Mass at my local Vendee church, so I could point out which page of her English missal we were on (she would have much preferred that Mass remain in Latin!).

Most of the congregation were elderly women; though a clutch of men would sneak in from the local bar as the bong of the last bell was fading. That generation will now have died off, so I imagine the attendance today is very low

And I once dragged the family to the midnight service there on Christmas Eve; terribly, dirge-y hymns.

When I was a student, in Grenoble, I used sometimes to attend the "culte" at the Protestant "temple" down the road - really because I found that singing hymns was a good way to speed up your French; you couldn't hang around trying to better pronounce a word when the music rushed you onwards.

The Protestants had better tunes, too!

  3. Just finished A House in Flanders; what a charming book. Michael Jenkins sounds a very interesting man; I wonder if he is still alive.

I could imagine exactly where the book was set; must be on the lower slopes of the Mont Cassel. The town at the top was one of my favourite discoveries when I was doing my guidebook to northern France.

Thanks so much for the recommendation mint and Cendrillon
  4. Grecian, is it ok to eat grapefruit if you are on medication? Or maybe you are no longer on any?

I mention it because the labels on both my blood-pressure pills and statins specifically state that no grapefruit products are to be taken along with them. Pity, cos I loved grapefruit juice with breakfast...

Of course that may only be relevant to my meds and not yours, but it might be worth checking.
  5. How did you get to know of him in the first place, Bradfords? Any clue there? (I am sure you have already racked your brain over this though.)

Was the person French or British?

What about contacting the "fanfares" in the local towns and villages? Maybe he plays the bugle with one of them.
  6. Nomoss, I think a load of stuff is missing at the top of my screen, as you can see here:

Possibly because I have a rather old browser. I just get that spinning spiky thing all the time; nothing ever seems to fill that empty space at the top of the page.

I managed to get round my immediate problem, because I remembered I had received an automated email from the forum to tell me about the pm, so I reached the message through that.
