  1. We hope to be moving to the Aude in early August. We have decided, I think, on the removals company, but are looking at the cost of the insurance offered by that company. They are offering a replacement insurance, but not new for old. Is there a company that offers this. Our contents insurence is new for old without any problems. We aren't looking for something for nothing, just value for money!

    Any ideas please?

John & Frances (soon to be in the Aude, please)))

There is no difference between solo and car and trailer/caravan limits anywhere on the French road system. But beware of going too fast with a caravan on the back, if it's not loaded correctly or you have the misfortune of a blowout or puncture then you could be in big trouble! Incorrect loading can lead to snaking and you don't want to go there at any time!!!

When we get settled we will be buying a caravan again, in France. We sold ours here because of all the hoops to get one registered in France...

I've come to the conclusion that that is the reason that the French have so many accidents, they all drive on the wrong side and then get all upset when we try to put them correct.

I heard that the Irish government had a trial period where all the HGVs spent 2 weeks driving on the right. Apparently it was a failure as far as driving safety was concerned, but it did help cut down the population explosion. "Thinks" I wonder if it would work if all the cars were on the right instead?

P.S. When we have been over the past 2 times I have had my hand held GPS in the car. When the speedo has been reading 80kph the GPS has recorded just about 72kph. This is the same with my car here in the UK. Almost all the speedos have a 10% or so error and normally read low. That's why most police are quite happy when you are doing 85 or so in an 80 limit. Their speedos are calibrated.....

The GPS is great when you are trying to find that tiny village in the middle of no-where too. Makes it easy to find your way out as well.....

  4. Hi Krin,

What a sad, mad man you have there. Sounds like us. We are going to be moving over this summer, please, and I am looking to replace my Xantia with a French 'left hooker' of the same ilk. We are also hoping to replace my wife's much loved 2CV Dolly with a 'racing camel', Mehari (?). I'm getting depressed because I want it all to happen now...

We are going to be in the Aude (11) so not much physical use to you, but just to let you know the spirit is there. As a matter of interest, there is a guy we know near Stroud, Glos. who's father-in-law revamps 'Lite 15s' and from what I have seen does a wonderful job!!

    Good luck,

    John.

    Hi Shazie,

15 daze, not bad for Deaf-ra. But seriously if you ask your local vet's they should be able to sort you out with the forms for the passport.

    Good luck,

    John.

  6. I had this thread coppied on the SW forum on the principle that some people put Castelnaudry in the SW and some in the SE, hedging bets I think it's called. I have just had a look at the SW bit and the thread has gone into the great hole in the web? It's dissapeared.

I had one reply, but it was not in the part that we want to be in, looked nice too. It was in Mazamet, a few doors from where we stayed at the benning of this month?

So if anyone knows of anywhere in the area we want to be could you please let us know?

    Thanking you in anticipation,

    John.
  7. We will be moving over to the Aude in the summer time (please!) and at the moment, although we are married, my wife, Frances, trades under her maiden name. Are there any good reasons why she would be better if she officially changed her name to mine? Are there any down sides or advantages to leaving it as it is?

We need to find out fairly quickly as if she is to change it then alsorts have to be done, so any gen anyone pretty please

    John.
  8. Andy have you any idea if my green 'sting ray' look-alike USB 'modem' would be compatable with the French system. At the moment I'm using it in the U.K. ? We aren't sure where we will be moving to in France yet, so it may all turn out to be academic... I'm with Freeserve Broadband at the moment and if I had the chance to recomend them to anyone I would recomend a very long bargepole instead !!!

  9. We are looking to buy a house to live in somewhere in the S/West area. We have been looking at the Living France mags and there seems to be a contradiction over buying a house with land in Aude.

In the Sept 03 LF page 84 it refers to "Any amount of land surrounding a property, in Aude, whether 200m2 or 2000m2 can increase the price twofold"

In the Oct 03 LF page 74 there's reference to "For example, 150000 euros could get you a detached, rural property near Carcassone, Aude with a couple pf hectares of land, or a semi detached village village property with a good sized garden in the Perpignan area".

As we have a budget of 150000 or so we are a bit confused as to what we may be able to get. Can anyone help to clear this for us please.....

    John.
  10. Hi Liz,

This is ultra late, but I have also posted a query about padio controlled aircraft in France. The U.K. frequencies are different to France. Ours is 35 meg/hertz, the French is 41 M/H. I have flown on our frequencies in France, but only on holiday and I think that we are allowed the difference. We HOPE to move to the S/W somewhere and I will have to change my kit.

Get your partner to look up the local model shop to find out what the local club is and what ever else he does make sure that he gets insurance to cover his flying!!! The local club will teach him how to fly, it is a lot cheaper in both cash and frustration, believe me!

Good luck, it's a completely addictive hobby, but lovely with it!!!

    John.
  11. We hope to be moving to the S/W, Lot (ish), area next year and as I am deep into radio controlled gliders ( well always radio, sometimes controlled?) I would love to know what the situation is. Does anyone know if there are many clubs catering for this totally adictive hobby? Either slope or thermal flying...
