Does anyone know if there is an equivalent outlet to PC world in France, if so what are they called so that we can check if there is one near to us.
Our printer is on its last legs (can't complain, its around 5 years old) and we're thinking of buying one of the new 3 in 1 types which incorporate scanning, printing, etc.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply we will probably give them a call and arrange a visit one weekend and take our dog with us.
If theres any other info you can share with us that would be helpful, i.e., do they have covered runs so that the dogs aren't left out in the rain? Do they walk the dogs once or twice a day? Anything that you think important would be helpful.

Does anyone know of a good kennel around Poitiers/Parthenay or within a reasonable drive of either?
We have had one 'not so good' experience with a french kennel near to us and will definitely not be trusting our dear old beagle to anywhere like that again.
We're also going to ask our vet if he can recommend anywhere, but it would be great to hear from anyones personal experience on this forum as you're more likely to be basing your judgement on English kennel standards.

Hi All
We're renovating our salon and as there is an existing chimney which we can open up, we would like to install a fireplace.
We have seen plenty of brick/block type cheminees that you could house a wood burner in, but we are not looking for this type - we want an old fashioned fireplace with a mantelpiece.
I've done a seach on this forum but not come up with anything, so if there is anyone out there who knows a supplier, or salvage yards perhaps, that do this kind of thing we'd be grateful.
We are in dept 86 between Poitiers and Parthenay so anywhere within an hours distance of us ( to start with) would be good.
Looking forward to loads of helpful replies as usual.

It was kind of you to take the time to give us such a comprehensive reply and to explain your situation.
We are not going to be setting up any kind of formal business ourselves, but merely have a small holiday cottage that we hope to let out through advertising etc. In your reply you covered our situation very well and it has underlined what we understood we needed to do.
We let our Maire know right from day one what our intentions were and he has been informed of all the work we have carried out to renovate the cottage, he tells us he is very happy that we run a holiday cottage in our village. The suggestion you made that we inform the hotel d'impots of our intentions was a very good one and is something we will do early in the New Year.

We'd be grateful to know how your registration with the local Tourist Office went, did you have to prepare anything for them, did they visit the property etc.
Also, we've been told (by an expert!!!) that whatever else you do, you have to register with Gites de France as well. We have heard so many conficting stories, so it would be good to hear of your personal experience.
Any advice you can give us would be gratefully received as we are about to register our holiday cottage now, in preparation for the new year.

We bought this book (recommended in Living France magazine) before moving to the Vienne and it has been invaluable, even the artisans who've carried out work for us have looked up things in it when we've wanted to be absolutely clear.

I would be really interested to hear how this works out for you and what you have to do.
My husband and I are in exactly the same boat as our E106's run out at the end of January 2005 and we are currently waiting for our letters from Newcastle to say this is the case.

Still have my BF brochure so I've looked up hotels in Normandy and found this one near to the ferry port in Caen (Ouistreham).
Hotel Normandie - 2 star - few minutes on foot or by car from the ferry. BF say its simple accommodation but the hotel is renowned for excellent cuisine. Prices are £22. per room this time of year.

In theory this should be a good way to travel, but its true that Guernsey can often be fog bound. We lived there for ten years and cant tell you how many aborted trips we had because flights couldn't get off the island, same problem coming back to Guernsey by air after trips away.
The fastcat service from Guernsey to St Malo is excellent, but this used to stop to pick up passengers at Jersey (don't know if it still does), so is a longer journey than you would think.
So all in all, not a practical way to travel if you only have a weekend to spend in France, although if you had more time and the weather were good it would be a lovely trip.

When did they start to allow pets to travel? We recently had to go to England urgently due to a family illness and cancelled our booking with Speedferries because we couldn't take our dog with us.
This is great news!Any more info on it?

Sorry that this hasn't been of use to anyone, we have now contacted Speedferries who say we can put the booking on hold for a year which is what we will do.

If there is anyone on the forum who would like (or needs) a Dover/Boulogne crossing in October, we have one available.
We had booked to go back to England but due to family illness, and problems with kennels here in France we have had to cancel our trip.
Rather than lose a booking completely, we wondered if there is anyone out there who could use this, we only ask that you pay the booking amendment fee of £10. if you would like it.
The original booking is with Speedferries,for a car and two passengers, Boulogne/Dover on the 15th October at 14.00, returning Dover/Boulogne on the 19th October at 11.15
We have had so much help on this forum we thought it might be of help to someone. Please let us know.

Thanks everybody for your help. We had tried the hypermarkets first but were looking for somewhere with a larger choice.
It was interesting to learn about PC CIty - unfortunately not one near us at the moment but we will keep an eye on their site. Viking Direct have been a big help though, as we have been able to buy a part for our existing printer, which we thought was beyond repair.
