[rayburn cookers - oil fired]

Very interesting replies so far and I will now add one to confuse you even more.

Domestic heating oil in the UK is 28sec and all 'oil fired' appliances are manufactured to use this oil.

Aga and Rayburn are manufactured by the same company and they have an agent in France near Toulouse...Paul Gee (see living France mag).
When we enquired about an oil fired rayburn for our home in France he e-mailed me some details on certain models along with the prices.
We choose one model and then phoned up our local agent to compare the prices. We quoted the model number and were advised that this was for 35sec oil and only available in mainland Europe.

Will be moving,like you, in approx 12 weeks and in similar situation as you and your husband, although neither of us will be working, initially. The E106, as you say, will cover health issues...up to 70% and only for a max of 2 years, you must have top-up insurnace to cover any differnece.
Like your husband I intend maintaining NI contribution to ensure the state pension. If he has enough class 1 contributions made then he can opt for class 3 ( 2001 / 2002 rate = 6.75 pw) this can be paid Quarterly or annually, by prior arrangement.

if you look in 'Living France' magazine you will see ads for some very good books who explain it all in 'lay persons' language.

[after E106 and before official retirement]

Due to redundancy my husband has taken early retirement and we're moving to our house in SW France, hopefully living on the income from investments. I know the E106 will cover us for the 70% of costs and for a period of 2 years. I also know that top up insurance will handle the rest.
We have a few ideas to consider to earn some extra income to keep us active and if some little part time job comes along then we may take it on.

Question: What do we do when the E106 expires assuming that we have no 'formal'job?

Another thought! The house we're buying is in the village of Marminiac, near Cazal, in northern Lot.We'd love to know of any English-speaking folk around there ,and possibly meet up sometime, as we intend to retire there in a few years time.
