  1. Ab,

You say you are paying 20 euros a 25kg bag of salt, then you are being robbed, I never pay any more that 6.5 to 10 euros for a 25kg bag, so I suggest you start shopping around.

Pool Companies will try and rip you off big style with chemicals etc, just ask Poolguy about liqiud chlorine, you do not need to be paying some fancy price from a pool shop but in fact you can buy eau de javel (bleach) from Gamm Vert at a fraction of the price.

Andrew, correct me if I am wrong please.

Also, many thanks to Poolguy for his invaluable advice for all of us pool novices out there.

  2. I wholly agree with alnmike, but it must be kept up to date. Chez Nous have an availability calender which is easy to keep up to date, althought I am amazed how many people do not use the service, especially in view of the cost of advertising with CN.

I also have an availability calender on my own website. If I were looking for a holiday rental myself I am sure I would be tempted to go for a property with availabilty shown, it would save a lot of time.

  3. Sorry, have just seen the earlier posts re tax returns coming out in May.

I do not normally read the posts in this section, that is my excuse, but I will looking more often now.

    Sorry.

  4. Greetings,

If you have completed a tax return, do you automatically get sent one in the post every year? the reason I ask is that we have not yet recieved one and the deadline for submission is the end of March.

I am sure we got sent one last year, can anyone help, before we venture to our local Hotel d'impots.

    Many thanks.

  5. This post is a timely reminder.

Filling a pool is one thing, but we must not forget the topping up that is always required over the summer due to evaporation.

This will lead us back onto the debate of which pools can be legally filled/topped up.

This subject is not going to go away, especially for all of us in the Charente Maritime.

There will be lots of debate over the interpretation of the regulations, for example is a gite pool a private pool or a commercial one? do you know?

  6. Dear Forum members, I am posting the below on behalf of a friend. Please reply direct to Jon. Please support this good cause, and you may have a good night as well. Cheers.

    Hi,

My name is Jonathan Green and I live close to 33920 St. Savin on the Gironde, Charente border.

I am arranging a charity "Quiz Night" on Shrove Tuesday, 28th February 2006 at the Café Marronniers, ave de la République, 17130 Montendre, starting at 8 pm.

Last year my son was very ill and spent 5 days in the intensive care unit at the Pellegrin Hospital, Bordeaux. Whilst he was in there I was offered a room at the Ronald McDonald "Maison des Parents" for parents whose sick children are admitted to the hospital, but Mum & Dad do not live close by. They provided a room in the "maison" (which is in the hospital grounds) with a direct telephone link to the intensive care ward so that I was only a couple of minutes away if I was needed urgently (which thankfully I wasn't!). They were so helpful and I was so thankful of the support.

So now it's payback time. I want to raise as much money as I can to help keep the house doing what it does so well.

There is a 5€ entry fee per person, with a maximum of 4 persons in each team. There will be a grand prize for the winning team and (if the night is well supported) a few spot prizes along the way. If you don't fancy entering the quiz but want to support us, why not come along and treat it as a social evening to meet some new friends (You can also buy some raffle tickets if you want!). The bar has just been renovated into a French version of a British pub and there is a choice of beers on draught, including GUINNESS!

There is a restaurant attached and so food should be available (unless the quiz players have to spread into the restaurant!).

Please telephone me on 05 57 58 06 15 (or email me at [email protected] to register your team, or if you want more information. I really need to know how many want to come so that I can arrange prizes, etc. If well supported I'd be willing to arrange a regular monthly "social evening" of some sort to keep the ball rolling.

Thanks for reading this far, there was a lot of details to get in! Hopefully I'll hear from you soon.

    Best Wishes to you all,

    Jonathan Green

  8. Simon,

I live about 20 mins from Royan, St George, Meschers etc. I am not a beach fisherman myself anymore, but St Georges always seem a popular beach for beachcasting, although I have never actually seen anyone catch anything.

The cote sauvage might be too challenging. Also ther are several ports like Mortagne which are popular in the summer for mullet. (I take my 9 yr old daughter, but we do not have much luck!)

Try visting a few beaches and see if ther is any action, it is such a large bit of coast ther must be some good spots.

    Bonne Chance.

  9. Greetings all you gite owners out there.

Holiday Rentals.com, are they any good?, the reason I ask is that they are offering an introductory offer that seems too good to be true.

Pay for a years advertising at £155 before March 15th, and after a year if you are not satisfied with them they will give you your money back. The terms and conditions do no specify how you have to be unhappy with them though.

Is this so, is it a genuine offer, or has anyone out there had problems getting a refund if not satisfied.

    Many thanks.

  10. Chez Nous, love them or hate them are the brand leaders, and they do deliver on the enquires and bookings front.

I also thought about ditching the entry in the brochure, that was until I had 3 bookings for 2006 from the 2005 brochure. I even know someone who got a booking last year from the 2002 brochure.

However, I am constantly appalled by the level of their customer service to us, the paying advertisers.

I even suggest that you all check your chez nous website entry every so often as I recently fornd that my gallery images had just dissappeared, when I phoned to complain they told me I had not paid, and of course I had.

So lets hope Peter Hunt reads these postings.

  11. Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this particular question, but here goes anyway.

We have some mixed woodland next to our property which I may try and purchase in the near future.

Does anyoine out there know what the going rate per m2 should be for mixed woodland?

I am considering buying it to preserve it from being removed for firewood, this woodland acts as a sound cushion between us and a nearby Moto Cross site.

    Many thanks

  13. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether or not the 5.5.% rate of TVA for renovations is still to exist on or after 01/01/06.

Each year there is talk of this rate being abolished, and 2006 was supposed to be that year (again).

Everybody I talk to seems to have a different opinion.

    Many thanks.

  15. I have just purchased a Renault Megane which is registered as a commercial vehicle. It has only two seats so is in effect a van. I do not intend to use the vehicle for commercial purposes, just as a runabout with the dog and to the dechettereie etc.

However, the Prefecture want to charge me 253 euros for a new carte grise as it is a commercial vehicle. I only paid 750 euros for the vehicle it, so 33% of the value does seem a bit steep.

So does anyone know if that is right, or can I change the use of the vehicle back to a private car?

Any help and advice will be gratefully welcomed.

  16. Being aware of the forum's code of conduct on naming and shaming any particular company, I am very interested to see if anyone else has experienced any problems with a particular pool company, based in the Charente Maritime and with offices in Lorignac and Jonzac.

I better not say anymore, if you have had a problem with the company, then please PM or e-mail me.

    Many thanks.

  17. I know I should not rise to TU's bait, but I feel very strongly about the role of this forum.

Funny how it is only TU that seems to have posted only negative replies on this subject.

Once again TU is missing the point. Surely the main reason for this forum is to get help and advice. Otherwise what purpose and value does it have. Yes, in a perfect world we would all be fluent in French, and we would not need to ask the questions on the forum.

Whilst I do appreciate that some subjects do get discussed again, that is unavoidable. I know one can search, but believe me that does not always deliver.

My wife is fluent in French, but other than getting the sales blurb form the companies trying to sell us the product, I thought it would be useful to get the opinions and thoughts from other forum members who had already done it.

So please can this be the end of the hand bags.

As I have said before, life is too short.

    The End.
