  1. Eslier,

I have also seen the chinese one on e-bay (I think) I have to agree that it looked cheap and cheerful.

I am also intending to buy the Palintest COOLPOOL Meter, and I am awaiting a price from Poolguy.

I looked into getting one shipped over fronm the UK, but it was going to cost well over £100.

You can get digital tester for ph and salt as well, but  am afraid I do not have any details.

I do noit mind the fact that you have to use a reagent with the Coolpool tester, and my big problem is reading the results by eye, it is very hit and miss.

  2. We have almost decided on fitting one of the above for next season. We have even identified which model to go for.

However, I am not that confident about fitting it myself, so if there are any pisciners/plumbers out there who would like to e-mail/pm me with a price for fitting I would be most grateful.

We live in the Charente Maritime near Gemozac.

    Many thanks.

  3. Kim,

Thanks for that, sorry to hear about your leaks, they are a pain, this is my second leak in as many years.

I will give the stuff a go, but I am not that confident. I do not want to dig up the terrace, but sometimes that is the only way?

I have heard mention of pressure testing and re-lining the pipes without having to them up, but I do not know anymore than that, the pressure testing would I suppose identify which system/skimmer had the leak.

    Good Luck.

  4. Greetings fellow pool owners.

I have a leak in one of my skimmer systems (about 1cm water loss per day) and was advised to purchase a product called "Anti Fuite" or "Colmateur de Fuites"

I purchased the product yesterday at over 50 euros for one litre, which was a bit of a shock.

I have read and digested the instructions, but was wondering if any of you out there had used the product and had any success with it?

    Many thanks.

  5. We have a 10 x 6m pool in the Charente Maritime.

Blockwork pools are more expensive to build, but do offer greater flexibility with different depths.

You will need some kind of heating up there, pompe a chaleurs are very popular at the moment, we are having one fitted for next season.

We have a salt water system, but I would not have one again, what you need is a dirct injection system with liquid chlorine (bleach) and ph minus or plus, they are not cheap, but seem but very effective, Poolguy is the man to speak with on this forum.

Security roller covers are also very popular, do not bother with alarms, they may be the cheapest option, but I think they are a waste of space, and I should know as we have one.

As the previous poster said, sand filtration is a far better option than cartridge.

Abris are fine, if you like that sort of thing, but they may be essential where you are.

I am unable to reccomend anyone, but be very carefull, there are a lot of sharks out there, we used a reccomended company who went bust and appear not to have the right guarentee, so just be careful and make sure you check the status of their 10 year guarentee.

    Good Luck.

  6. I do not live in dept 66, but I have lived through the severe water restrictions of 2005, so I am a tad confused by the following;

    Ian Horn wrote"

"the automatic top-up of a pool (due to evaporation-loss) is OK"

So what do you do if you have not got an automatic top-up system?

I know the spotter planes cannot detect an auto system, but what is the difference between tan auto system  and topping up your pool with a hose?

  7. I have to agree with Susan AH about liners. The damage caused by some suncare products used by our gite guests is shocking. And that is after regular cleaning.

I am now considering a ban on flippers, oars are already a no no with a plastic liner.

The other option one can go for is a liner with a ceramic tile border, the tiles are fixed to a plastic sleeve, which in turn is attached to the top of the liner. So you get the advantages of the liner, with the ease of being able to clean the water with less problems.

I also agree with Poolguy with direct injection systems for chlorine and ph, I wish I knew about them before I had my pool installled.

But the hindsight is very useful. If only I had discovered this forum before installing my pool.

  8. Candide,

Poolguy is the expert on this one, but basically a lot of pool chemicals are a complete rip off. Liquid Chlorine is in fact Eau de Javel (bleach),and is available in 20 litre containers from Gamm Vert and other bricos, and it costs a fraction of the price of liquid chlorine from pool shops and pool companies.

It is the same story with ph minus, which is a solution of Sulphuric Acid.

    Below are instructions from Poolguy;

Sulphuric acid is sold in some brico's and auto shops for batteries and is a standard 37% concentration.
When you pour it into your drum for feeding (wearing gloves naturally) then you should dilute it by 50-75%
That means say 5 litres of acid into 10-15 litres of water(alway add acid to water and not the other way around.

    Hope this helps.

  9. Many thanks for the suggestions.

I did contact the Consulate in Bordeaux, and no surprise they were not interested or very helpful.

I suppose I could use a UK address of a friend, but it is a criminal offence to make a false declaration to obtain a licence.

The last option of asking the DVLA, well  asked them sometime ago about changing the address, and they said no, but the situation is a tad different now.

The last option of asking for the appropriate proof of entitlement is an idea, the thought of taking a Frenceh Driving Test is one I am not looking forward too, imagine going onto the Peage and keeping the indicator on when overtaking!!

  10. This is a bit of a dilemma, you live in France full time. But you are driving on a UK paper licence. (allowed)

Then you lose your UK paper licence. You report the matter to the Gendarmerie, who issue you with a yellow piece of paper which is case you get stopped by the police, The yellow form is valid for only 2 months.

In the meantime you apply for a new UK Photocard licence, ah, a problem, the DVLA will only issue a UK licence if you reside in the UK.

So, can I apply for a French licence, well, no, because I cannot prove that I have a valid UK licence.

If anyone has any useful suggestions to this dilemma, I would be very grateful.

  11. Our  pool company, (now gone bust), advised us to keep our filtration on when there are storms.

Does anyone know why? apart from the obvious like extra debris getting into the pool.

The reason I ask is that after a storm last night I have lost my chlorine levels. It is a salt water system, the output shows fine, the salt level is fine, the electrodes are clean, the ph is fine, but no chlorine.

I test every day, and the chlorine has disappeared overnight.

Any help and advice gratefully recieved.

    Many thanks.

  12. From my limited observations, deep paddling pools seem harder to maintain the an in ground pool.

The pumps and filters never seem to be up to the job, I have also observed  that a lot of people think that because they are just big paddling pools then you do not have to worry so much about looking after the water quality. That is a very wrong assumption to make.

Call me paranoid, but I check the levels in my pool every day.

  13. Wils,

I had not heard that before, but in my case I have a salt water pool, I need to circulate as much water as possible, so as to allow the produvtion of chlorine, so in my case the sump/drain outlet stays open.

It may be differnt for direct chlorine pools.

Andrew (poolguy) may be able to help us on the one.

  14. VMAX

I am not a pool expert, I have the same set-up, and I keep both the skimmers and the drain/sump open all the time for filtration.

I only close off the drain and one of the skimmers for manual vacuuming.

It is all about circulating as much water through the filtration system as you can, the drain/sump takes a lot of the deeper water through the system.

I am sure Andrew (Poolguy) who is a very experienced and knowledgable contributor on this forum will comment, especially if they disagree with my advice.

    Hope this helps.

  15. We have a glut of various plums this year, have made loads of chutney but quite fancy trying to make some prunes.

I have checked the internet, but no real success apart from one site suggesting that one dries the plums for 18 hours in a hot air oven.

So, can anyone suggest how it is done,or is the above mentioned the only way?

    Many thanks.

  16. Monti,

They should be available in your local pool supplies shop, I bought 4 so that I could clean two whilst using the other two, you place them around your skimmer basket and tie them off, they need checking and cleanining every day, but that depends on how many insects visit your pool.

    Hope this helps.

  17. About 6 weeks ago I purchased some re-usable skimmer filter bags. They have been a great success as they greatly reduce the amount of debris both large and small going into the pre-filter, and ultimately the main filter.

As a result, I have not had too backwash so often, which saves a lot of water. I have not had to clean my pre-filter for a couple of weeks either. The water quality is very stable and crystal clear. They do not affect the water flow rate through the skimmers, so a good idea?

They appear expensive form what they are, 9-12 euros each. You can also get dispoable ones, but I have not tried them.

And, no I am not selling them or have anything to gain by promoting them, honest.

  18. Has anybody had a similar problem to me, I have just recived 10 e-mails via my website, all sent at the same time, from different e-mails, all asking to book consecutive weeks form Oct to Dec 2006.

A friend thinks they are whats called "Nuisance e-mails", not SPAM as they are not selling anything.

I had one a few days ago, replied as if it was a genuine enquiry, but heard nothing.

Below is an example of one.

You have a booking request from

  19. Lhp,

Sorry to hear about your problems, we too have had problems with the French Enterprise that installed our pool in 2004.  There have been quite a few threads on this forum about shoddy or non existent after sales service. And in particular the need for some kind of proffesional body.

One important thing to find out is have they got the appropriate type of 10 year insurance?, the company that built ours did not, and apparently it is quite difficult for compaines to get insurance for building pools.

    Good Luck.

  21. Has anyone out there used ebay to sell unsold weeks?

I have just checked out the site, I searched "holidays france" and got 80 hits.

However, when I looked at them, most of the listings had no bids or just one bid, also most were "buy it now" at a fixed price.

I would interested to hear if anyone has any success in selling weeks this way.

I am not desperate as we are fully booked, but it may be a way of shifting the odd unsold week or week in the low season.

    Many thanks
