  1. We are travelling with an infant for a couple of days R & R at La Rochelle this week. Has anybody any recommendations for not too expensive hotels or B & B's with parking?. Have sussed out usual Etap & Ibis where you know what to expect. A couple of weeks ago off the back of the company website we stayed at a Mercure in Ouistreham where once you got past the stylish reception was like 'Faulty Towers' - extremely dated and non too clean.
  2. I have just received a ticket in respect of a UK resident & licence holder who was clocked 4kph above the limit whilst driving my car and en route to pick me up from the airport. Licence, insurance etc are in order. Obviously I can prove that I was not the driver, & on the form there is the section to name the driver, which of course will have UK details. Has anybody any knowledge or experience of this type of thing & what may happen next?
  3. Here is the legislation as applicable in the UK, however it is applicable throughout the EU. Apologies for the slight error in the previous post.

"EU vehicles brought into the UK can be used for six months in any 12-month period. You do not need to register the vehicle in the UK as long as you can show that the vehicle complies with the registration and tax requirements of its home country. It’s the responsibility of the driver to prove how long the vehicle has been in the country. Producing ferry tickets can do this.

If the keeper of the vehicle becomes resident in the UK, the vehicle must be immediately registered and taxed in the UK.

UK residents are not allowed to use a foreign registered vehicle on UK roads. The exception is when a UK resident: is employed or self-employed in another EU member state uses a EU registered company car temporarily in the UK for business purposes.Certain vehicles will be required to display a temporary 'Q' plate. Temporary visitor status isn't appropriate to these vehicles".
  4. By the letter of the law it is the same as in Britain for foreign registered vehicles - 6 months continuous. I dont want to attract any rightous comments by daring to suggest that if you kept it for 7 months the chances of coming unstuck would be pretty remote if you have a UK address with the relevant driving documents in that address........
  5. Thanks to everybody for your assistance re getting French car insurance. I have settled for Nick Chubb http://www.asttral.com/ who came in considerably cheaper & the deal included breakdown cover & replacement glass etc. which were optional extras in other quotes. One thing I noticed when trying to get online quotes from French companies was that I was unable to get beyond the field which asked when you passed your driving licence. I passed mine before I was 18 - which is too young in France, so I kept getting warning flags indicating this.

Re the Avatar, I tried importing one of my own pictures, but only the file icon appeared...........

All in all, this is a fantastic site for expats. Whilst I had done lots of homework before moving, this site has proved invaluable on several occasions. It is great to be able to share experiences which both inform and prevent others encountering pitfalls.
  6. We have had the same difficulties ourselves having read lots of reviews about new VW's, in particular the Passat. We are on the point of buying a 12/07 Passat Bluemotion and have done lots of research, including speaking to 2 UK VW dealers & giving them enough flannel to get the answers we were after. The problems largely seem to revolve around the electronic handbrake. If you end up buying the the Golf from a dealer and it has an electronic handbrake, insist that they change the handbrake switch and upgrade the software. Buying from a dealer, whilst perhaps not the cheapest, will give you the peace of mind of a warranty that means the paper it is written on. We have talked our local dealer down 1300 euros and they are going to service, valet, tax, register & do the software upgrade.

Have a look at this. It gives you details of all the VW's in the country

  7. I did not mention anything about driving a UK car here, all I wanted to know was whether anybody had any recommendations for a french insurance company as I am about to buy my first french car. The posters are correct in that the maximum NCD is 50%, and I have been quoted anything from 500 - 900 euro's for a 12/07 VW Passat Bluemotion (the 900 was AXA). - PS How do you get the pictures by your names?
  8. Thanks Dave. I guess that I will have to shop around. Without getting personal re moral high grounds, I re-insured with Admiral before moving here 6 months ago. Just to knit pick, the UK car is registered to my London address where I stay through the week, so from a 'by the letter' point all bases are covered,
  9. We are on the cusp of buying our first French car. Can anybody please suggest insurance companies which are to be recommended - or to avoid, plus things like is our no claims bonus transferrable or anything else we would benefit from being aware of etc. We are both in our 40's, no accidents or convictions, are pernamently resident here & I have a French licence. I am aware that Axa has English speaking staff, but do you pay a premium for the pleasure? Thanks
  10. This is our first christmas in France & it has been suggested (by somebody in the UK) that the Pompiers come around at christmas delivering calendars, and in return householders give them donations. Has anybody else heard of this, and if so, what is the 'going rate' for donations. Likewise, is it customary to give the postie something. Ours is very good.

    Thanks
  11. The point of my post was to enquire whether anybody KNEW how the French system worked regarding 'automated justice'. I gave an overview of how the British system worked with respect to legal processes & judicial time bars. The fact that an incorrect fine/summons had been sent was part of my enquiry, as legal proceedural loopholes are exploited to clear suspects from murder to parking tickets as we all know. That is the legal 'game' played by defence lawyers. The upshot of my question was that the original poster may find that because of proceedural or time issues the fine was void. re the TomTom, I did not know about the free info on t'internet - so thanks, and the other Daily Mail readers rant re speeding between cameras does not merit response.
  12. What is the legal process in France? Is it that the registered owner is de facto responsible for any traffic offences allegedly committed in relation to the use of the vehicle? In the UK the police must send the RO a notice of intended prosecution within 14 days, otherwise the process is discontinued, likewise if the RO was not the driver, the NIP must be sent to the alleged driver also within 14 days. Furthermore there is a 6 months time bar on proceedings notwithstanding the above. There must be a similar time constraint here, as how can an owner possibly know who was driving at a particular time and place 6 months ago. Before you pay the fine or respond, check the legal process. Natural justice would suggest that it must be an abuse of process to receive the first notification 6 months after the alleged offence??

PS - yesterday I renewed my TOM TOM SatNav speed camera site subscription for £15. Money well spent as it knows where every fixed site is located & perfectly legal.
  13. Having wished to make some amendments to the title deeds of our house, in January this year we went to a Notaire in South Brittany who was advertised on an expat website as 'English spoken'. Turned out that his English was as good as my Welsh!! Anyway we explained what we wanted & have made the mistake of leaving the title deeds with him whilst he gave us photocopies. He has since - despite our expressing in writing in both French & English our instructions, drafted us documents which we neither asked for or need. The upshot is that he is refusing to give us our deeds unless we pay several hundred Euro's for work that wasn't asked for in the first place. In any case this is a word of warning - never leave your original documents. Let them have the photocopy.
  14. It is still the same form. Just fill in your personal details in the fields above the driving licence categories. The person at the Prefecture will do this then stamp it up, take your other papers & that is all there is to it.

I was astonished at how easy it was - plus it was free.
  15. They photocopy your application for a french licence which they stamp up with the prefecture stamp, plus photocopies of your UK licence. That suffices pending your french licence arriving. Just keep that in your car in case you are unlucky enough to get stopped.

Re the documents you need - you can download the Demande de Deliverance de permis de conduire from the internet. You just fill in the first sections with your name, date of birth and address. Hand this in with your proof of ID - passport etc, & proof of address plus 2 passport approved photos. They fill in the rest & you will - depending on your prefecture, get your licence (French) in a few days or weeks. I applied for a french licence in Vannes a month ago & got it back in 3 days.
  16. Hi Danny, the decoder is a Samsung SHD85. There is a communal aerial for the group of houses where we live. It was into this via co-axial that the TV used to connect to. I followed the installation instructions as per the guide d'installation, in that an ethernet cable connects the decoder to the Livebox. I did not have a satellite connection to connect to the decoder, however there is another picture which shows - in addition to the satellite connection - plug a co-axial cable into the decoder. The decoder is then connected to the TV either by SCART or HDMI cable. The Livexox is obviously connected to the phone socket. The end of your posts sounds pretty much like what we have. There are more than a few local channels, but there are about three HD channels at the end of the list. When we connected it up it did a search - as it also did last week. At the end of the tune in a page came up which if translated correctly said something like if you are not getting as many channels as you thought, it is down to the reception/connection in your area. We do live a bit in the sticks - even our mobile phone reception is poor to non existent at times. If it is just a case of getting a satellite & plugging it in that would be great.

    Cheers

    Gary
