  1. Describing a technical matter with the help of an online translator is a lot easier than trying to explain the technical nuances of the problem and the various fault finding self diagnosis you have done over the phone. 'Everyday French' would not necessarily equip you for knowing your pressure relief valve from your backflow preventer when asked about it in French. I only posted the question because EDF & Orange etc. have English speaking helplines, and I had not been able to find one for Veolia by my own endeavours.
  2. We are considering renting unfurnished our current house after we buy another property which will be our primary residence. We understand that by law the minimum rental contract period is 3 years with some exceptions. At the end of the term we could terminate the tennancy for example if we wanted to live there or sell the property. Does anybody know what would happen if, for example as a result of a serious change in our financial circumstances as a result of one of us dying, it was necessary to sell the house? It surely cannot be the case that the owner of a let house was unable to sell it in these circumstances to avoid severe financial hardship - could it?
  3. We live in what was our previous holiday home - having a UK 'holiday home' insurance policy. On moving pernamently, the company were happy to enhance this cover to full time occupancy - including accidental damage cover. We have had quotes from French insurance companies for the house, and although the premiums are not too dissimilar, none of them include accidental damage. Our question is - has anybody had any experience of making claims on UK insurances for French properties? We are wondering if it might be a case of them being happy to take our money, however we might experience problems in the event of a claim?
  4. I am looking to get a towbar fitted in the next few weeks to my French Passat. We are in the UK next month, so - given that there seem to be swings & roundabouts in most things, firstly, is it cheaper to get one fitted in the UK, and secondly given that in the UK some things are the 'wrong way around', would it be just as easy to get one fitted there on a LHD car?
  5. We will be shortly moving to a new house with a large virgin plot which needs to be turned into a garden. Can anybody reccommend a garden centre or nursery - specifically one which will offer 'trade prices' given that we will be looking to buy many trees and shrubs, grass seed etc. We will also be looking to buy a polytunnel.
  6. http://www2.equipement.gouv.fr/formulaires/fic_pdf/11247.pdf

Check out the above. I filled it in, took my passport & another form of ID to my local prefecture in Vannes, surrendered my UK licence, was given a receipt for it which covered the interim period, and 4 days later I got my french driving licence. No tosh about temporary licences or tax statements. No questions asked really. I could not believe how simple it was! Some posters here on previous similar queries seem to have been asked to have medicals etc. All unnecessary.
  7. We are buying a house & the owners are offering to sell several appliances - fridge freezer, washing machines, lawn mower etc. They are all 'mid range' - not Miele or Bosch for example, and are 2 to 3 years old on average. Does anybody know whether there is some sort of formula to roughly calculate the depreciation value? We could do with some of the items, however as they are out of warranty, we think that they are possibly asking too much for them (e.g. a €550 fridge freezer on offer at €350).
  8. Just an update on the original post. I do not know how or why the earlier difficulties came to be - non response to emails and messages left on the central answer phone, however we visited their office in Verteillac a couple of months ago. They are very much still in business, and we are in the process of buying a house in that area through them. BV in Verteillac could have not have been more helpful, and indeed are doing things that indeed go beyond their call of duty.
  9. Neither will I. TomTom sent out an email yesterday pointing out the new illegality and advising how to deactivate the french speed camera notifications. They are however working on a new facility for france which will advise of 'danger zones'. I dare say that the letter of the law can be got around by - instead of pinpointing the exact camera site, you declare a 'danger zone' of - say 50 metres of where the camera happens to be sited. Crazy law and fairly difficult to enforce. Will the police now be trained in the settings and workings of all satnav systems to determine whether a camera location facility is active? Are the Via Michelin map / itineries now to be illegal too? Plus, the maximum fine is now €1500, as oposed to something like €135 for using a mobile phone. Which is the more dangerous by a factor of 10??
  10. I put this poser on 'Money saving expat', however it might be better placed here. We are about to buy a property that needs a new bathroom & kitchen, new floor and wall tiles etc, plus a brighter paint job. The house actually is in very good nick, just owned by some old folk, so rather old fashioned.

Our thoughts are on buying kitchen from Ikea, so possibly not much difference in price, but would it would be worth buying the rest in Britain & transporting to Charante?

Plus, does anybody know where you could sell quallity second hand bits? e.g. the house has an absolutely immaculate enameled wood burner in a rather gaudy and old fashioned colour. Cheers
  11. Thanks for responses so far. Regarding radiator and room sizes, there are 3 average sized bedrooms. The dining and kitchen areas are open plan (with rads), and the living area absolutely ginormous. There are a couple of huge radiators mounted vertically there on the walls, each a good 1.5m x 1m. JB mentions the deposit for a gas takk - I take it you essentially rent it? Re heat pump heating, we had a walk through of the property with a builder and we discussed possible boiler options. He suggested that a heat pump was not efficient unless there was under floor heating????? We really are just after fag packet ideas as to boiler costs, as all the other things which need doing to finish the property - or at least make it habitable, are adding up.
  12. We are considering buying an unfinished barn conversion (approx 210m2 habital area) and currently doing our sums. It is fitted with radiators an pipework is in place, however there is no boiler. Can anybody give us a very rough guesstimation of how much an oil / gas boiler and tank would cost including installation. Also, which is better - oil or gas.
  13. We have saved ourselves €800 by doing the work ourselves using online translators (Google etc), then proof reading and fine tuning with the help of a dictionary. The Notaire has been perfectly happy on both occasions when we have done this. It helps of course if you are adept using Word etc & can produce professional documents. It does however demonstrate that you can save a packet by doing it 'properly' yourself.
  14. We are house hunting in the Charante area at the moment and have viewed a couple of barn conversions, one occupied, the other 'lived in' but empty for a couple of months. One thing which has struck us are the huge amount of both dead and alive flies in both. Has anybody any suggestions as to the cause and solution? there did not appear to be anything dead around. We live in our ex holiday home a bit further north, and you could return after several months away and not find any flies.
