I went to a meeting last night run by the tourisme office of the conseil general of La Rochelle - our regional head office. They confirmed what I posted before that a 'meublés de tourisme' is a classified property An unclassified meublés or unclassified gite DOES NOT need to complete the registration at the maire. The reason for the declaration is that the new laws brought in with the new classification system, also brought in the opening up of the 'classification' market, so that if you want a classification you do not have to go through your prefecture, there are private companies who have been given accreditation. This means that the prefecture no longer 'know' who has been classified with the new classification so they need you to declare at the maire that you have been classified. The maire then forwards the information to the prefecture once a year.

Could I just say that You do not need to be classified AND you do not fill out the declaration form at your maire UNLESS you are ! ie if you are unclassified you do not fill out the declaration at the maireThe form is a declaration that you are classified that is why maires are refusing the form from people who are not classified because they do not need to fill it in. This is stated 'in writing' in the booklet issued by the conseil general.

I had the same worry with my son who is also 7, although we have no plans to return to the uk (been here 15yrs, so I think you could say we are settled) we still want our children to be fluent in English. I started with the Peter and Jane books as they use keywords rather than phonics - so he didn't get confused. He's picked it up really well but we arn't consistent and he needs to be able to write and spell in english too, not just read, so we now have 'blackhen education' to help us. (mentioned earlier) The teacher comes just every other week to our house (as we didn't want to overload him) - our son loves it, and is learning, reading and writing all about Egypt at the moment - far more interesting than what he learns at school and its all in English which he thinks is fab ! He couldn't compete with an English taught child of the same age but then he is learning two languages; I think the main thing is to teach him that English is important too. We are confident that as his French reading and writing and spelling progress, so will his English.

This guide has just been sent to me by our regional tourisme office in La Rochelle. It is bang up to date and includes very detailed and informative information on owning a seasonal rental property including :-Regional tourism statistics-Creation of a seasonal rental property (including planning permission, normes of security - smoke alarms, disabled access, pools, bunk beds, swings, balconies, staircase etc)-Fiscal regimes, taxes (mcro enterprise, tx fonciere, tx sejour, impot / revenue etc)-Classification (with a second brochure detailing the new classification procedures and exactly what you have to have to be classified)-Contracts-useful numbers/addresses etcIt is an invaluable document to have and I'd recommend asking you regional conseil general tourism dept for a copy (assuming it's not just the Charente Maritime who have published it) The facts and figures are accurate and up to date unlike most info you find on the internet. It will answer most questions that have been cropping up on the forum.
