Vlad
I'm getting a (very) small boat with outboard motor to pootle about on the Dordogne. Does anyone know if I need any form of permit to do this?
Bob T
Not sure, but I have heard that motor boats are not allowed on the Dordogne in most areas apart from the 3 registered tourist boats near Beynac.
Hoddy
I think you're right BobT. In eight years the only boats I've seen with a motor are those at Beynac and La Roque Gageac and even they don't run them all the time on every trip.Hoddy
Alex H
A roundabout answer, but check here http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/NR/rdonlyres/9979C4E6-4BD7-4933-BB54-6D24AB25CFDA/0/09_Dordogne.pdfUnder site 5 in the Dordogne - Moulin du Roch it says "Most watersports are available on the River Dordogne but motor boats, windsurfers and dinghies are not allowed." NickP
I don't know about the Dordogne, but on Le Loir we are only allowed to use electric outboards, they're not wonderful but OK for poodling about and fishing. Good thing is they are cheap to buy and 12 Volt leisure batteries are not expensive.
woolybanana
Well, these rivers are largely protected, thank Bobo, but can also be very dangerous to navigate to the uninitiated - eg La Loire.
Tony F Dordogne
The Dordogne is protected and motor boats are not usually allowed, except the tourist boats and emergency vehicles. And in most places round our bit, it's too shallow to use an outboard, hence the canoes and why the old boats that historically used the river were so shallow draft. Vlad
Thanks all. We are near Bergerac. We certainly see occasional boats on the river and indeed one is kept by somebody on the opposite bank (who I must speak to). Whether it is an electric outboard or not I don't know. I'm just thinking of a 3.5-4.0m flat-hulled boat usually used for fishing in shallow rivers and creeks.

James2
Why the Dordogne ? When the canal Lateral is fantastic for small motor boats!
Hoddy
Vlad, did you find a definite answer to your question ? I think there are a number of us who would like to know the answer.Hoddy
Vlad
Sorry about the delay. No permit is required as long as the motor is less than 6 horse power.
Vlad
Whilst I have been getting to the bottom of this permission lark, a rather annoying thing happened - the wreck of a plastic tub that we had tied up at the bank (this was just a 2 metre hulk that had been patched up to float!) was stolen! some pirate came along and simply cut the cord! actually I wasn't that bothered (otherwise I'd have taken slightly more security measures) but how sad is that? I mention this as a warning to others - there are desperate thieves on the Dordogne!
