Avignon and Aix Christmas markets have begun if anyone's looking for a lovely day out. We've just got back from Aix, where there are some very nice chalets selling all sorts of gifts etc and the town was starting to look very festive, in the nicest possible way (apart from a very red-faced plastic santa and reindeer ride for the kids, who looked as though they'd sunk a jeraboam of red wine each!). Both markets continue until after Christmas, and if you visit Aix between 17th and 24th December there will also be the 13 desserts market just beyond the rotonde. It's in a marquee, has lots of lovely food and wine, and they usually have plenty of free samples to give away!

Roll on Saturday, when we'll visit the Christmas market at Avignon, and add to my collection of santons. (Aix also has a section selling santons by the tourist office, but it's a tradition that we buy a santon at Avignon!). If you visit the Christmas market at Avignon, don't miss the creche in the city hall. Aix has one in a chalet on the sunny 'restaurant' side of Cours Mirabeau; the market is all along the shady 'banks' side.
