Gardian
It's more than about 'sound-bites', which are daft of course, but aren't objective and don't really judge the Leader.Being a Leader of any nation, let alone one of the majors, is about resolving conflict and setting the strategy, direction, style etc of your country. It's strategic. Judging them retrospectively, did he or she make worthwhile changes in any of the above during their tenure? For me:Thatcher: yes, fixing industrial strife, which has given the UK a more effective Union baseBlair: yes, in bringing peace to NI (I hope)Chirac: nul points (can anybody tell me what he really delivered or changed for the better?)Berlusconi: a few points for his brazenessBush: minus nul points. As for Chirac, but loads more negativesToo late to think of any more. Others will no doubt disagree.
Clarkkent
Shall we see his like again? An inarticulate alcoholic who made (some of) his countrymen feel good.He seized power in a coup by lawyers over hanging chads and his primary support came from the Christian right who believed he would outlaw abortion. On 9/11 his response was to take the John Wayne approach. Had he have stopped to consider why America was hated by so much of the world would we have the mess we have now?Barack Obama comes to office with so many hopes pinned to him. He is a man of obvious high intelligence, but how long will it be before he stumbles?.............Margaret Thatcher did indeed sort out industrial relations, but she squandered North Sea oil revenues in tax handouts, and - more importantly - destroyed the English pub!
