Dick Smith
It is one of two things, properly either a note sent around a group of people, to which each appends a comment, or else, less properly, a document, usually word-processed, which is mailed or emailed to a group of people (correctly a mass- or group-mail). These are now used by some people to keep a group, such as a wider family or circle of real or imagined friends, abreast of developments in their own family. Tends to be an opportunity for one-upmanship.

cooperlola
The Round Robin extracts (from the excellent Mr Hoggart) were a subject in his Guardian column on a regular basis around Christmas time. Hilarious. The book is a great read.
