Claire's not fibbing. I can make my blob light up whenever I like, but it's only temporary.
Pfewww! Thanks for that! I was starting to think I was having hallucinations even before touching the pink stuff!!!

Are you going to tell us how you do it?

I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you!

Oh, alright then, listen very carefully, I vill say zis only once [:)]

There is more than one forum webserver (I have no idea how many, but the actual number doesn't change things). The "load" (ie us, users of the forum posting things and searching for things etc) is spread between several servers.  Each webserver carries a snapshot of the forum.  The servers need to update their snapshots instantly for some things, ie every time anyone posts something.  Some stuff doesn't change much, and so doesn't need updating as regularly, personal profiles for example. My guess is that the profile information usually gets replicated to the other servers at a time when the load (us) is low, so probably in the wee small hours of the morning, when most of us are offline (so no blob).

But if you make a change to your profile (or even if you just go to your profile, change nothing, and then hit the save button) the information "forces" an update.  You are naturally online when you do this, so your blob gets lit up in the process.

But, although the changes to your profile will be replicated across the other servers, the blob will only be lit up if you stay on the same server.  So if you refresh the web page, or go to the forum via the link in a notification email, you could well end up viewing the forum from a different webserver, so no blob.

I have to add that all of the above could well be complete codswallop, it's just how I'm guessing it works.  The only thing I know for certain is that updating your profile will light up your blob.

Well, I am not technically minded but I it makes sense when I read it!

Thanks for that. I'll now contact the relevant people for a disguise before I get bumped off!
