I get the sense that the acceleration has leveled out, but the direction of the economy will continue for this year. People talk a lot about the 1930's and make a lot of comparisons, but the truth is that in every other recession/depression/slump, we have never seen a policy response from governments that has been so early in the downturn. I hate to think that Gordon Brown has done anything right, but history will tell us that the government's rapid response has been key in preventing a collapse in the financial system and expedited a return to normality that would take decades with a Japanese style response seen in the 1990's.
