Keeping costs down at Stansted

Here is some information which might be helpful to people using Ryanair

flights from Stansted and who are based too far away to travel there on

the morning of the flight.

Most B&B owners are not happy to book you in if you may be arriving after

11.00 pm. One alternative often used by our family is the Welcome Lodge

at Birchanger Green on the M11 just two miles from Stansted airport.

Charges vary (they have a special £45 per night offer just after

Christmas) but they allow 3 adults to occupy the 1 double, 1 single beds

in the room.

Our best B&B find is the Phoenix Lodge (www.phoenixlodge.co.uk) in

nearby Bishops Stortford. It is a rather plain modern house run by Lucas

and his wife Ai Woon who are very friendly and helpful and keep the place

spotless. He currently has 8 rooms to rent with the smallest en suite

single at just £39 a night. Every room has a fridge with everything for

a basic beakfast - toast and eggs are provided if you leave after 7.30 am.

Lucas will pick up from the station by arrangement (or it’s about 15 mins

walk) and there is a bus stop adjacent to his gate where the No 7 bus

leaves at 7.15 and 8.15am direct for the airport (about a 15 minute ride).

We have only ever arrived by train as we live in France, but he does offer

attractive rates to people who stay overnight and want to leave their cars

on his large front forecourt while they spend a week or two away.

I hope this helps turn a bargain flight into a bargain trip - not the same

thing at all if you have to reach Stansted from other parts of the UK!
