lancashirelass11
We have previously done the 16 hour journey from Manchester to Bordeaux (via the tunnel) in one go, but are thinking of taking an overnight stop on our next trip. Anyone got any suggestions for a reasonably priced stopover somewhere close to Abbeville. Would prefer something with a bit more soul than a Formule type motel, but nothing too typically French. Just somewhere for 2 + a 5 year old to dump our bags, find a spot of decent food for tea and a comfy sleep. thanks
plod
Sorry can't help with the accommodation except to say that I'v ealways found Kyriad, Campaniles etc good value, but how do you manage that journey in 16 hours? It takes me that long to do Albi to London.
raindog
I once did Lodeve - London (including ferry crossing of course) in 12 hours with a mate.I can hardly believe it now when I think about it.Also did Montpellier - Derby in 24 hours a long time ago in a Kennings luton van. plod
It also says under 12 hours for my trip. Having driven this route many times the itinerary must be a non-stop one.
lancashirelass11
We do it pretty much non-stop, share the driving and use the tunnel - our 5 year old is an amazingly good traveller (I think she just enjoys having the both of us as a captive audience!). Kitty
We did Bristol to Bordeaux via the Tunnel and decided never again. The drive from the tunnel to Bordeaux was SOOOOOOO tedious. We stayed at a hotel/bar near Abbeville and my hubby is going to dig out the paperwork so we can tell you the name. It was very cheap, including an entrecote steak and chips for everyone in the evening. That trip, we had two children with us and we had a room for 4. It was noisy as the bar did not empty until after midnight. I'll post again when I have the name.
Alan Zoff
We found this to be a great place to stop over. It means coming off the autoroute for a few miles (from Abbeville on the coast road towards Le Crotoy) but it's worth it if you are not in a huge hurry:http://lamareauxiris.monsite.orange.fr/
Ford Anglia
Depends which route you are taking, but I've used a Climat at Abbeville, A couple of nice chain hotels south of Rouen, near where the A154 branches off, a Camapanile near where the cows are on the roundabout, and a decent one south of Evreux, IIRC it was a Comfort, it's on your right as you bypass Evreux on the N154, and can be seen from the road. All are decent, all do food. plod
I tried the Rouen Evreux route once and found it very slow.
Hoddy
We've stayed overnight in Neufchatel-en-Bray, Rouen, which has a variety of hotels to choose from, and Evreux where the choice is more limited, but where we've found perfectly decent places to stay.Hoddy
Ford Anglia
Avoid the Campanile at Evreux, it gets full of CRS at weekends, and yes, they ARE on duty. Apparently, Evreux is a rough place. Just have a look at the leclerc at the N end of town. 10 foot security fences, anyone?[Www]
shropshirelass
We travel from Shropshire to the Gers (1.5 hours south of Bordeaux) and it takes us 10 hours from Calais. We have done it without breaking the journey, leaving home in the early hours of the morning for a 7.30am ferry and then driving via Rouen, Le Mans, Alencon, Tours etc but it's pretty tiring. We like to break the journey down at Vouvray which is about 5 hours from Calais. We've found a very reasonable and lovely place to stay near there with an excellent restaurant and the friendliest owners is the Auberge de la Brenne http://www.auberge-brenne.com/. We stop off in Vouvray on the way back too to stock up with delicious Vouvray Sec and sparkling wines which must be some of the best quality and best value wines in France. Another place to stay although with incredibly basic rooms but a superb restaurant is in Vouvray itself - Le Grand Vatel 8 AVENUE LEON BRULE37210 VOUVRAYTél. : 02 47 52 70 32 - Fax : 02 47 52 74
Mark
but nothing too typically French. thanks
Ha ha!!! Excellent. Heaven forbid. You could go more directly south from Manchester to Portsmouth to Ouistreham to Cassis's place. He's 'nothing too typically French'; sometimes he pretends but just ignore him and he'll revert to John Bull in two shakes of a sausage's tail. Jonzjob
If I may do a hijacklette here and ask a similar question? We are going to Cambridge from Carcassonne, via Boulogne sur Mer, next Thursday and are looking to stay as near Boulogne as possible. Does anyone know of anywhere that will look after the 2 of us with our lovely chocky labrador overnight pretty please???[:D] We are trying to avoid the Formula1 type hotels as we would like to be able to get a reasonable evening meal without having to trapese about looking for it.Something else too. As we are both early retarded (?) we don't have the money to buy anywhere[:(]!!

Babbles
We've found that doing Ribble valley ( 45 mins north of mancheser) to the Gers 1 1/5 hours south of Bordeaux that its better to do your sleeping on the ferry (Portsmouth/ Saint Malo) at least you know that the car / van isn't going to get broken into and all the precious cargo stolen [;-)] its quite a schlep in france but as your that bit nearer the ports it should be under 7 hours, we've contemplated doing the tunnel when we do the big move but have decided against it. Scooby
We have done a very similar trip a few times and it takes about 17 hours with one or two short stops (leave at 7.00 am arrive at midnight). We don't go via the tunnel though but take the Dover - Calais ferry. If we are doing the journey at a more gentle pace we stop over at Neufchatel en Bray. Lindylou
We use a really good B & B (with evening meal) just off the A28 near Neufchatel en Bray. Very comfortable and friendly and easy to find. Try the website for more information www.moulin-epinay.com.
Jonzjob
We have booked into the Premier Class at Boulogne. 33€ for the 2 of us with our dog! Can't be bad value, but I will try and remember to let you know what it was like when we get back!! It's only a couple of miles outside the town so no rush in the morning!!Ta for all the gen folks!! lancashirelass11
Thanks folks - I think the B&B at Neufchatel is the one I will bw going for. At 90euro for the three of us, and no schlepping around looking for something to eat, it's a pleasant, French (but not too French) bargain!
