0870 numbers again

Recommended Posts

I've just checked the cost of ringing 0870 numbers from our Club Internet ADSL system and it's € 0.99 per minute.

That's 68 p per minute folks.

Does anyone know what France Telecom charge?

This was brought home to me because we recently wanted to contact P&O to make a reservation France-England-France.   The old 01304 Dover-from-abroad numbers have all been suppressed,  and on principle I refuse to use 0870 numbers for any purpose whatsoever,  whether I am in the UK or in France.   So I rang P&O Head Office and in fact you CAN still contact Dover P&O via their admin number which is

01304 863000

In addition a guest staying wanted to contact Amex to extend his green card cover.  Again,  only an 0870 number listed.   Being also a man of prinicple we went all round American Express via the landline number on his card before finally finding someone who would admit to being able to carry out our friend's request.  Up until then the response was always "you need to dial 0870....."

This whole 0870 business is a ramp and a vile nuisance and I would beg other forum members to fight it for all they're worth.

Many French phone companies seem to treat British 0870 numbers as mobile numbers, One Tel certainly does, so I don't think FT is likely to be a lot different.

At least 0870 numbers can be called from abroad; 0845 ones often cannot and I have never found an 0800 one that can.

I have just tried to find out from the FT website and I have never seen a more complicated set of tarifs!!! have a look HERE - it must have taken lifetimes to devise. Needless to say, I was unable to find an answer to your question.

I checked on the Free.fr site out of interest and it is 19 cents per minute for VOIP calls to UK 0870 numbers. Quite a difference! Neuf.fr website does not mention UK 0870. Alice.fr website doesn't mention them either. Likewise the Orange.fr site.

PS I hope you added the alternatives for the 0870 numbers you found to the saynoto0870 site

@ J&D - I've found this link which sort of (in a roundabout way) tells you the price of FT

http://www.agence.francetelecom.com/aide/calcul_appel_f.php

Yes,  my contribution to 0870 is the "unconfirmed" entry and the comment on the P&O page.

In fact calling 0870 from FT isn't nearly as expensive as CI.

Laters:  I see the link you have found is in essence the same as mine....

I buy a "Kertel" card  from La Poste at €7.50 and use this site :

The Kertel card cheats a bit, but it is much cheaper than trying to call on 0870 numbers, wheich are simply a rip-off, IMNSHO.

Re the above, I have just now discovered that the tariff to Uk has been jacked up ad is much more expensive. No notification that I could find.

Now I am using Téléplanéte, which gives you a prior number to dial then you dial the required number and it connects you to, eg, UK, at "local rates".  I'll report when my phone bill arrives.

Thing are changing in the UK as BT are scrapping 0870 and 0845 numbers from 1st April 2008 and replacing them with 0800 and 0808 free numbers, hopefully the rest of the UK telecom industry will following. Just how easy it will be to contact these new numbers from France will I suppose be dependent on your French provider. For more details:
