suein56
No problem with BBC at all - it is all there in glorious technicolour with a female tennis player dressed in rather fetching faux *leopardskin!*well it looks like leopardskin Sue [:)]
Patf
Can anyone help? Can get Google but not most websites - sometimes yes, sometimes no. Can usually get Windows, hotmail, LloydsTSB, youtube, but not LF or TF and many others. Comes up with "this page cannot be displayed."I am now using husband's computer which is linked to mine. His isn't so bad, something to do with the fact that he has Motzilla. We are with Orange and I rang them for advice and they gave up in the end. Said we should send for a specialist. We have checked Firefox on and off.Hoping someone can diagnose - if I don't reply it's because we are having more problems.Wondering if it could be due to electricity being off yesterday, or night before. krusty
It sounds like the problem I posted "web jams"I just keep pressing function key F5 or refresh and eventually the page loads.http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/1422907/ShowPost.aspx
Patf
I think that might be it, Krusty. Everything seems to be working ok at the moment, fingers crossed. What about yours, Jon?

Sharkster
Is your ISP Orange? If so, I had the same problems. I recently changed my DNS provide to OpenDNS (it is a free service). It solved the problem immediately. Pretty simple to do too. Here is the linkhttp://www.opendns.com/I think the way the make money is the fact they drive you to their search engine rather than Google (if you type a search into the address bar of your browser that is). sid
SharksterI'll try anything once! I've just switched to Open DNS and the results have been surprising; it's loads faster finding websites and opening them!I'll monitor it for a while and I can always change back if it turns out to be a problem, but hey, on current results, it's GREAT!!Sid
Jonzjob
I have had a look at that site Sharky. One question though if I may? What on earth is DNS?[8-)]Oh, by the way, all is as normal as usual now.

krusty
Here you go Jon , all you need to know about DNS [:)]http://computer.howstuffworks.com/dns.htmThe net is back to normal for me as well.It is Columbus day weekend in the USA , so that may be keeping traffic off the web and onto the American roads [;-)]
Cat
DNS = Domain Name System. The DNS is a record that converts IP addresses from numbers into names, ie 123.456.789.0 to www.awebsite.com. It tells a browser where a web site is located and also tells mail servers where to route email to. If there are DNS problems the domain name won't work. DNS for dummies EDIT: Krusty beat me to it. Up until the change, I had to refresh between 3-5 times to get some websites up (including Orange.co.uk). It took less than 5 minutes to change the DNS and the results were instant. They do claim to be faster, but not sure I have noticed an increase in speed, but no more surfing problems!
Jonzjob
Thank you for the links Crusty & Kathy. Very interesting, now what was the question [8-)]???No, serioulsy, ta!!"It is Columbus day weekend in the USA , so that may be keeping traffic off the web and onto the American roads ". I was always under the impression that a weekend was more than a day? But I suppose that the time could move at a different pace for our trans-Atlantic cousins, or on a different planet [6]??? tenniswitch
I think it was more a "markets crashing" than a Columbus Day problem. CD is not a big deal in the US (and not a legal holiday).
krusty
Why are people so argumentative tonight ? If you take the trouble to read my earlier post I did say the problem was due to peoples worries about markets .Not a legal holiday , you better let the embassy's know they have it wrong.http://france.usembassy.gov/holidays.html

Maybe the Feds sneaked that one in on me. (Don't ever remember it being observed in my part of the US.) But I definitely agree with you that some connection problems/slowdowns have been caused by increased internet traffic related to the current economic meltdown. Jonzjob
Krusty, I would have thought that you have been on this forum to know that my tounge is always firmly in my cheek and I find life too depressing to take very much seriously. If I have offended then I am very sorry [:$] It is not my intention to offend very many people and if it was then you would know I promise, but not this time...[:D]Have a look at Tennis's signature, it says loads of how I feel!!Edit :- I tried the embassy link, but they are all on holiday for some reason [Www][blink][6] ??
