Maddie
Doesn't the Kennel Club do this then in England?
No. Most reputable breeders will have an affix for dogs they breed themselves or will add the same name as a suffix if they have a dog bought in from another kennel. This is then possibly followed by an name which may follow a theme or start will a particlar letter maybe incorporating names of earlier generations of their own lines but there is no particilar convention. eg Cambremer Tom Sawyer and Cambremer Tom Cobbley of Charway are both sons, from the same litter of sire Charway Uncle Tom! My dog is KC registered but does not come from a registered breeder so her sibblings were given any old names!
SaligoBay
What a load of funny-shaped balls, it's almost as good as rugby!MY dog was born in 2005, and nobody, but nobody, not neighbours, not the vets, not anybody, has suggested that he should have a name beginning with A.Pure race? Pure as they come, mec. So pure, he's the only one! Bandy legs, scruffy lugs and all.http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f314/BonnyYewTree/Tempo2.jpg
nom de plume
Last week we bought a 12 week old pedegree puppy. At birth he and therest of his siblings were all given firstly their breaders name andthen a name begining with 'A' for 2005. There was no way we were goingto continue to call him any part of his original name and have calledhim Ike. The breader had already arranged for the first 3 of his 4vaccinations and when I took him to our vet for the final jab, microchip and to start the passport proceedures the vet had to issueall the paperwork in his original name so it would tie in with thefirst vacinations and his ear tatoo. The vet also thought the name hehad been given was daft and filled in his surgeries records in his newname. He then went on to explain that each and every pedigree animalmust have an unique name rather like a boat so by now animals names aregetting very silly.Diana
Christine Animal
He's absolutey cute SB, how lucky you took him in. He's certainly what they call a "coin de rue" with teckel undertones. What did you call him? (Sorry, just realised it must be Tempo...).I've noticed how many English people call their dog Sam.
zeb
Wow SB, has he got a relative I could scrounge?
SaligoBay
Sorry, zeb, the vet said that the two others that must have been abandoned with him (presumably a litter) have found homes.Lucky that they were abandoned really, because if someone had come to the door and offered me a dog I'd have said no, but who could refuse a poor, scared baby like that? It was Fate. Yes, there's teckel in there somewhere. Mr SB says he's half teckel, half rat. But I know he loves him really. We called him Tempo, short for Tempo-rary dog, and it stuck.Don't know what I'd call him if it had to begin with A. Does he look like an Alasdair? Ty Korrigan
My Uncle Rocco actually had a mother inlaw who lost her Black Lab one occasion... She lived in South Harrow, London. Rocco was phoned and asked to go and search for the hound through the streets. He recalls the tale of family falling out because he wouldn't call out, the dogs name in fear of being arrested or beaten up, even in the1970's It was named after Wing Commander Guy Gibson's Lab....of dam busters fame.... or a small African nation... Nig!ger.Thats a family legend.

It’s the only time my younger dogis called by her proper name. Made amistake once and called her by her usual name (totally different from that onher papers) and the Brittany Ferries asked which dog I had. Did not cause a problem but I’m careful now. Maddie
In reality very few owners use their dogs registered name. All my travel documents are in thier "pet" name only. We never use their full names at all.
