wylienet
Our 20-year old son is about to spend the next year working in France and plans to take his 10-year old Seat Ibiza. Does anyone have any suggestions on where he's likely to find the cheapest/best insurance? Thanks for any advice
vette
I'm not sure about cheap insurance, but one thing to be aware of is that he will have to register the car in France and also have a Control Technique carried out, that's the French MOT. To do that, the car would most likely have to have the headlamps changed.
grumpyaudeman
After a few weeks he will be considered a french resident and will have to register the car in France, Time to dig out the cert of conformityI suggest he works out a system to remain in France less than 6 months and returns again to remain as a uk resident
Chancer
The answer to your question dépends on what country the vehicle will be registered in, don't put the grief on yourself that French registering will entail unless you absolutely have to, on forums like this people will delight in telling you that you must do so, that you are French resident from the day you arrive etc etc, its a strange phenomenon and doesnt manifest itself in other subjects that did not cause them the angst and grief that they now want others to suffer because they had to. I am pretty sure that there is an exemption for students studying here, the simplest is to do as (not so) Grumpyaudeman says, try and find a UK insurer that will offer more than 90 days cover, if he is only third party insured then all your problems are over, he can just come over and get on with his studies/enjoy himself as the 3rd party liability cover extends to the whole of Europe without time limit.
