Hi,

What is the French name for lead flashing tape, or whatever equivelant might be available here?

Its not for any roofing application actualy, but UK flashing tape is ideal for what I need - ie self adhesive, heavy, dense, slightly flexible material.

Thanks.

This wouldnt be to try and repair the siliconed abortion of a veranda would it Dave?

The stuff that you are looking for I have never seen here, the closest that I have found  are "bandes d'etanchéité pour toiture" but its a poor imitation.

Some of my old zinc gutters had been repaired (and I use the word advisedly) with a more substantial foil backed torched on tape but I have never seen it in the grossistes.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice.

hmmm, its nothing to do with building work at all, infact its for a car! One of the more effective adhesive sound deadening materials on the market is Dynamat - expensive in UK and probably eye-watering here in France if I could find it. However, lead flashing tape is a commonly used alternative to Dynamat which I have used myself a few times previously. Looks like that idea is a bust too though.

I was only just recently wondering how you have been getting on with the minivan Dave, do you have any more photos to spare?

What is the most rediculously priced part, material or consumable that you have baulked at buying in France?

Most mechanical parts seem to average 25 - 50% more expensive here in France, but the biggest butt-clenchers are the tools and consumables. 1mm slimline slitting discs for the angle grinder cost about 80 - 90p each in Aberdeen. I cant get them locally for less than €3.20 each! How can that possibly be justified? I bought a job-lot from ebay UK and had them shipped over. MIG welding wire, torch tips and CO2 gas proved very hard to get hold of due to MIG not being popular here, and very expensive when I found them.

My latest purchase was a professial style electric polisher (I made a right chuff of the respray - orange peel all over the place so had to flat it down and buff it back to a shine - Not easy with 2K paint!) It looks like a big 280mm angle grinder, but its slower and variable speed. I hunted everywhere locally and eventually found one for €150 for the machine alone, none of the foam or lambswool bonnets were included - they cost around 5 - 8€ each ontop. I got the same machine, same brand etc, about 20 assorted bonnets, some fancy polish and other cleaning accessories from ebay Germany for €86 including postage!

Speaking of paint, I priced up everything I needed here...enough 2k, hardner, thinners, primer etc for the whole shell in and out and it came to a shade under €400. I managed to work a trip back to UK into my schedule a while ago and picked up the same stuff, in slightly larger quantities for £130.

Oh, and farecla G3 polishing compound to sort out the paint problem - I was surprised the motor factors here stocked it, and was surprised almost to the point of losing conciousness when he said it was €52 a bottle.[:@]

Anyway, enough moaning - I could go on for hours on this subject!

(2 different camera give 2 very different interpretations of the final colour, hence the difference between some of the photos)
