Hawkwind......not my fav...but would go to hear them sometimes as one of my good friends brother played bass guitar in the band.
What, you know Lemmy's sibling? [:D]

Just to show we are not a load of dinosaurs:

Mika, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, The Feeling, Kate Nash, KT Tunstall, The Kooks, Editors, Klaxons, The Hoosiers, Arcade Fire, Mark Ronson - and more.

I think popular music is in better shape, as far as quality acts are concerned, who can play instruments, write great songs, and mean something to their audience, than at any time since the 1960s. I don't know if the Brit School (partly funded by the Brit Awards) is responsible, certainly several of the current crop have been through it.

In fact we had a thread going on this topic, last year, jon.

Lots of pics of people showing off their box collection and the suggestion that at some point it might be a good idea to all get together and jam a gig.

It even reached the point where one of my chums on this forum was so motivated, he went out and bought a kit and made a Telecaster recreation!

My other big interest is motor racing and I'm a member of another forum on this topc.

Amazed to find how many keen racers also play or played guitar!

If listening to 'souped up car engines' is the norm for that type of thread..............then no wonder it 'slipped of the map'[:-))]

Or sense?[:D]  It's done 70k kilometres, trouble free.  Needs a service every 2 years or 30ks which costs me about 250€, and does 20kilometres+ to the litre.  There's a great big gap between what I'd love to own, and can actually afford to!  And, perhaps more importantly (?dunno) - I don't give a stuff about apperances.  I used to have a Maestro van back in the UK....  That really was [:-))]

Mrs Gluey's trusty old Volvo 940 Estate trundles happily backwards and forward to la belle France with the rear seats folded down and various things like brushcutters (without being dis-assembled!) conveniently located in the rear....................

OK, so Boadicia II (The 240 was Boadicia I!) is not very aerodynamic, but gurgles along the autoroute loaded to the gunwales without any signs of strain!

My Beema objects strenuously to the rural roads and the dollops of mud and cow merde.

Perhaps we could try another motorsport thread under motoring?

BTW. artsole; the sound of a GTO Ferrari (e.g.) on open pipes at full chat is acoustically as damned wonderful as a Strat with bendy strings through 400 watts and a fuz box!

Which is probably why Nick Mason has one; and a D Type: and a BRM V16 GP car; and..............................

Lucky bloody sod!

A dear racing chum, JE, sadly no longer with us, used to drive backwards and forwards in an Imp van!

It had the low compression head, but weight in the boot (at the front) and racing Imp front suspenders.

He used to embarrass loads of quicker machinery on big bends and roundabouts; whilst it did lean a bit with its over-burdened super structure!

But  then he was a Yorkshireman and fixated on cost!

Until a few years back, I added a Fiat Fiorino diesel van to the "Fleet" which we all used for delivering IT kit and loads of other stuff.

I loved it!

Once went to my local University to deliver the keynote pres on eCommerce for a Cross Campus Workshop.

One VIP attender (who was not a believer!) stated firmly to one of my lecturer colleagues "Unless this man arrives in, say, a white van, He will have absolutely no credibility with me! Humph!!"

Whereupon my chum guffawed and said, "Well, if you look out front, you'll see him arriving in his white van anytime now!"

GTO Ferrari was a V12 special sports car which wiped out all the opposition.

Open pipes mean no silencers. The Whinge Brigade now insist that even motor racing circuits built before they were born can't make too much nasty noise.

A Strat is a Fender Stratocaster: a solid bodied electric guitar designed back in the early 50s and still the favoured instrument of most serious professional players.

400 watts of amplification is enough to fill Wembley.

A Fuzz Box is a sound distortion device used by heavy metal guitarists, mainly.

It's the same with your art thread - I said it would slide off the back, and it has. On a general forum like this it's almost impossible to keep a specialised thread going. It's amazing the way we've managed to keep the rugby thing up and running like we have.

The Catherine Tate Show is a very perceptive and amusing look ( send up ) at a segment of the uk population.

Billy Connolly, Peter Kay,Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse and the "Absolutely Fabulous " team  have all succeeded doing just that!

ps Catherine Tate is a very good actress

Yes agreed, she is.

But she doesn't actually need to F and blind to make her point.

Anymore than Ben Elton needs to try (and fail) to be funny when doing stand up by his snide gyps about menstruation, for example.

A man who can co-write Blackadder doesn't need to stoop that low.

Sad.

I am not denying the acting ability of the people mentioned. These people are funny without the need for what probabaly most of the viewers would call bad language. If they are unable to communicate their humor without the use of 'bad language' it must show a limited knowledge of the English vocabulary?

Swearing used to be the first line of defence in a confrontation, now the first line of defence  is violence. I would guess that the majority of young people involved in violent situations today have a very limited awareness of the Queens English. ''Ah fink ya no wot ah meen annat'' Other...uvver, brother....bruvver, think....fink, thought....fawt........and so on.

I can accept that all things change over a period of time but why should they do so in favour of the uneducated?????

So what is it with bagpipes, I said.  Sometimes watercress wouldn't taste the same after a game or two they all agreed.

At which point we agreed to differ.

Good old Simon, what?

Weedon, i'm a bit pissed, because i've been watching the rugby - but....what are you on about?[8-)]
