Tree felling cost

We had a 35m canadian pine felled after the '99 hurricane.  It was next to the house and the top 5m came off and pierced our garage roof during the storm, so we decided to have it felled.

It was immediately next to the house (the span of branches were over the garage, and also out over the lane).  It was done in sections and involved hire of wood crane truck.  It took several days. The trunk was taken away and the remainder burned in our field.  The cost (April 2000) was 2,350 Euros.  Do ensure you have someone who is insured and who knows what they are doing.  PM me if you want the details of the people we used.

We recently had 3 huge trees taken down. It cost 1100€. we now have two huge piles of shreddings to get rid of. I understand that the cost would have been considerably more except that they had a use for the main trunks and took away the smaller branches. One guy told us that it costs 40€ a ton to dispose of wood and there was at least 6 tons. Get a few quotes as they vary enormously. Our company describes themselves as "arboristes grimpeurs" They used climbing gear and short chain saws. Only a job for the young and very fit!

Probably best to think in terms of the time required to deal with your tree.

Around here, the current price for properly-insured people is c. €550 / day - that's for 2 blokes, one to cut the other to assist.  They'd handle one big tree comfortably in a day, but if you add in disposal (just get them to do it - life's too short), call it €700 - €800 for the whole job, top whack.

Can't believe that prices around your way are much different.

Oh, and plus TVA!!

€550 is exactly what I've just been quoted which I thought was bit steep but from responses so far would seem to be the going rate [:(]

As I say, I'm happy enough to dispose of the wood, yes it's pine but properly seasoned it's perfectly burnable and I have plenty of long term storage space.

Yes, that sounds about right for round here.  We have just gotten 4 quotes to cut a very large parasol pine.  Two were right about where Gardian's quotes are.  Two others were beyond obscene.

I get to cut down 10m3 of wood in our commune forest for €80 [:)] (thats about 10 trees)...bargain. But then I don't mind where the things land.

Seriously though, if the wood is Pine then get them to take it away as it's no good to burn. Unless you need a pine beam somewhere and know a saw mill that can cut it up for you. I do know that it's very hard work climbing and cutting trees down in pieces (after trying it!). So paying someone to do it for you makes life a whole lot easier.

Can anyone recommend anyone around the Vire area in Normandy? Need 3 very large Beech trees felling and the first quote of €3100 seems a bit steep to me.

Also if anyone ever needs trees felling in 71 I can highly recommend the company that did ours. It was a 20m Pine that needed felling in sections due to its proximity to us and our neighbours and the bill was a mere €200
